Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology is a new type of technology for wireless communication that is based on the transmission of low power sub-nanosecond pulses. UWB communication utilizes a large bandwidth that overlaps and is coexistent with other wireless communication standards that can be also considered as narrow-band interferers. Create an efficient buck-boost converter that adapts to input voltage range from ~3.8V to 70V, and outputs 13.7V DC, the voltage required by a charge controller to charge a battery. The energy stored in the battery will be supplied back to the grid.

The cost of energy saved by the converter should eventually cover the initial price of the converter. The converter should help reduce the net power consumption of the exercise machines used in the Cal Poly gym

As the transistor count per chip in computer microprocessors surpasses one billion, the semiconductor industry has become more and more concerned with meeting processor’s power requirements. This poses a design challenge for the power supply module, especially when the processor operates at low voltage range. Research into these metamaterials could possibly be the first steps toward bending electromagnetic radiation (i.e., microwaves, light, etc.) around an object or person. The development of a handheld single and triple chamber atmospheric pressure coaxial dielectric barrier discharge driven by Flyback circuitry for helium and argon discharges is described. The Flyback uses external metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor power switching technology and the transformer operates in the continuous current mode to convert a continuous dc power of 10–33 W to generate a 1.2–1.6 kV 3.5 μs pulse. An argon discharge breakdown voltage of ∼768 V is measured. Deposition systems utilizing plasma are used for a variety of tasks, including tool coatings and creating thin-film materials. In order to have repeatable results, the internal conditions of a plasma chamber need to be known. This project centered on the use of data from optical emissions and a Langmuir probe from an argon plasma amorphous silicon depositing system. An electron energy distribution function (EEDF) was obtained from manipulation of the Langmuir probe data. The physics issues of developing model-based control of plasma etching are presented. A novel methodology for incorporating real-time model-based control of plasma processing systems is developed. The methodology is developed for control of two dependent variables (ion flux and chemical densities) by two independent controls (27 MHz power and O2flow). A phenomenological physics model of the nonlinear coupling between the independent controls and the dependent variables of the plasma is presented. This paper provides a quantitative comparison and explores the design space of lead zirconium titanate (PZT)–only and PZT-on-silicon length-extensional mode resonators for incorporation into radio frequency microelectromechanical system filters and oscillators. We experimentally measured the correlation of motional impedance (RX) and quality factor (Q) with the resonators’ silicon layer thickness (tSi). For identical lateral dimensions and PZT-layer thicknesses (tPZT), the PZT-on-silicon resonator has higher resonant frequency (fC), higher Q (5100 versus 140), lower RX (51 Ω versus 205 Ω), and better linearity [third-order input intercept …

AlGaN∕GaNheterostructure field-effect transistor design using capacitively coupled contacts (C3HFET) is presented. Insulated-gate [C3 metal-oxide-semiconductor HFET(C3MOSHFET)] has also been realized. The capacitively coupled source, gate, and drain of C3 device do not require annealedOhmic contacts and can be fabricated using gate alignment-free technology. For typical AlGaN∕GaNheterostructures, the equivalent contact resistance of C3 transistors is below 0.6Ωmm. In rf-control applications, the C3HFET and especially the C3MOSHFET have much higher operating rf powers as compared to HFETs.C3 design is instrumental for studying the two-dimensional electron gas transport in other wide band gap …

The thesis presents a study of different microwave radiators for wireless applications in the frequency range of 2.2 – 2.5GHz. The performance of microstrip patch antennas and dual polarized dipole antennas were evaluated numerically and experimentally verified. A single microstrip patch and a four- element microstrip array were simulated, fabricated and tested. Simulation was carried out by the finite integration time domain (FITD) method. Such templates are of significant interest for the low-cost implementation of semiconductor and metal nanostructure arrays. In addition, thin-film alumina templates on silicon have the potential for nanostructure integration with silicon electronics. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) is a non-intrusive detection technique, which enables the measurement of several parameters such as pressure, concentration, and temperature of a species of interest by analyzing the latter's absorption lineshape profile. The method employs a synchronous modulation and detection apparatus to increase the signal to noise ratio and hence the sensitivity of the measurement. Phase-sensitive detection and demodulation of the signal is performed at the modulation frequency and its harmonics. Surface dynamics dominate the incorporation of charged, As+Ga, and neutral, As0Ga, antisite arsenic, and the temporal variation of reflection high-energy electron diffraction(RHEED) intensity in the low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy of (100) gallium arsenide(GaAs). A rate equation model is proposed which includes the presence and dynamics of a physisorbed arsenic (PA) layer riding the growth surface. The PA layer dictates the incorporation and concentration of As+Ga and As0Ga. Additionally, it influences the RHEED oscillations (ROs) behavior and the RO’s dependence on its coverage through its contribution to the reflected intensity.
