We conducted optical and electrical simulations with the goal of determining the optimal design for conjugated polymer-fullerene tandem solar cells using poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-(2-ethylhexyl)- 4H-cyclopenta[2,1- b;3,4- b′] dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT): [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PC61 BM) as a bottom cell and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT): [6,6]-phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as a top cell. The effects of photon density, absorption, balanced and unbalanced charge carrier transport, and bimolecular recombination in the two subcells were incorporated into the simulations. We found that the maximum energy conversion efficiency (η) is 9% when charge carrier mobilities in …

Finite Element Analysis Of Ring-Shaped Emission Profile In Plasma Bullet, Yukinori Sakiyama, David B. Graves, Julien Jarrige, Mounir Laroussi
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Using a one-way coupled model of neutral gas flow and plasma dynamics we report a mechanism to explain the ring-shaped emission pattern that has been observed experimentally in plasma bullets at atmospheric pressure. We solve a fluid model with the local field approximation in one-dimensional cylindrical coordinates, corresponding to a cross-section of a plasma bullet. Pulselike uniform electric field is assumed to be applied perpendicular to the simulation domain. Time and spatially resolved spectroscopic measurements support the simulation results.
Modeling And Analysis Of Radial Flux Toroidally Wound Twin Rotor Permanent Magnet Motor, Ravi Kishore Pratapa
Modeling And Analysis Of Radial Flux Toroidally Wound Twin Rotor Permanent Magnet Motor, Ravi Kishore Pratapa
LSU Master's Theses
The main objective of current thesis is the study of Radial Flux Twin Rotor Permanent Magnet (RFTWTRPM) motor. The tasks were to review the literature about RFTWTPM motors and model the motor using Finite Element Method Magnetics (FEMM 4.0). Later the performance of RFTWTRPM motor as a brushless dc motor was analyzed by using MATLAB/SIMULINK package. To find the electrical and mechanical parameters of the RFTWTRPM motor, the rotor and stator dimensions of the motor were firstly optimized using linear FEMM model of the motor. The optimized dimensions were used to construct the cylindrical FEMM model. This model was later …
Audio Watermarking Using Transformation Techniques, Rajkiran Ravula
Audio Watermarking Using Transformation Techniques, Rajkiran Ravula
LSU Master's Theses
Watermarking is a technique, which is used in protecting digital information like images, videos and audio as it provides copyrights and ownership. Audio watermarking is more challenging than image watermarking due to the dynamic supremacy of hearing capacity over the visual field. This thesis attempts to solve the quantization based audio watermarking technique based on both the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The underlying system involves the statistical characteristics of the signal. This study considers different wavelet filters and quantization techniques. A comparison is performed on diverge algorithms and audio signals to help examine the performance …
Modeling Pm Rotary-Linear Motors With Twin-Stator Using 3d Femm, Oleksandr Dobzhanskyi
Modeling Pm Rotary-Linear Motors With Twin-Stator Using 3d Femm, Oleksandr Dobzhanskyi
LSU Master's Theses
A rapid growth of automatization nowadays requires electric machines to be adjusted to any technological process. Therefore, a need in machines with two degrees of mechanical freedom (TDMF), which can operate rotationally and linearly, is relatively large. This thesis is directed on the design and study of performance of PM (permanent magnet) rotary-linear synchronous motors with twin-armature as a new type of electric machines which can perform linear, rotational and helical movements. Three stator versions are considered, namely: stator with rotary and linear armatures, two rotary armatures, and two linear armatures. The rotors have PMs skewed with respect to the …
Adaptive Quantization In Wireless Sensor Networks With Encryption, Niharika Konakalla
Adaptive Quantization In Wireless Sensor Networks With Encryption, Niharika Konakalla
LSU Master's Theses
We consider the estimation of a deterministic unknown parameter in an encrypted wireless sensor networks. Adaptive quantization is used on the sensor's observation and the outputs of the sensors are then encrypted using a probabilistic cipher. In a conventional fixed quantization scheme, estimation error grows exponentially with the difference between the threshold and the unknown parameter to be estimated. Hence, to avoid this, we used and adaptive quantization scheme where each sensor adaptively adjusts its quantization threshold. We find the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound for the Ally Fusion Center (AFC) and then find the optimal estimate of the unknown parameter for …

Analysis And Design Of A Wideband Dual-Polarized Antenna Based On The Principle Of Huygens' Source, Hyukjun Seo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Analysis and designs of wideband dual-polarized antennas for mobile wireless communication systems are presented. The concept for Huygens' sources, which are combinations of electric and magnetic dipoles, is used. As a result a wideband unidirectional antenna, which consists of a planar dipole and a slot, is selected for the antenna element. This study aims at designing a dually polarized antenna with wideband performance. The first part of the study discusses the performance of the linearly polarized antenna element at 2.5 GHz. Several design parameters associated with the antenna element are addressed. To improve the performance and increase the bandwidth, a …
Design Techniques To Improve Time Dependent Dielectric Breakdown Based Failure For Cmos Circuits, Emanuel S. Tarog
Design Techniques To Improve Time Dependent Dielectric Breakdown Based Failure For Cmos Circuits, Emanuel S. Tarog
Master's Theses
This project investigates the failure of various CMOS circuits as a result of Time Dependent Dielectric Breakdown (TDDB) and explores design techniques to increase the mean time to failure (MTTF) of large-scale circuits. Time Dependent Dielectric Breakdown is a phenomenon where the oxide underneath the gate degrades as a result of the electric field in the material. Currently, there are few well documented design techniques that can increase lifetime, but with a tool chain I created called the MTTF Analyzing Program, or MAP, I was able to test circuits under various conditions in order to identify weak links, discover relationships, …
The Design And Manufacture Of A Light Emitting Diode Package For General Lighting, Michael S. Krist
The Design And Manufacture Of A Light Emitting Diode Package For General Lighting, Michael S. Krist
Master's Theses
Lighting technologies have evolved over the years to become higher quality, more efficient sources of light. LEDs are poised to become the market standard for general lighting because they are the most power efficient form of lighting and do not contain hazardous materials. Unfortunately, LEDs pose unique problems because advanced thermal management is required to remove the high heat fluxes generated by such relatively small devices. These problems have already been overcome with complex packaging and exotic materials, but high costs are preventing this technology from displacing current lighting technologies.
The purpose of this study is to develop a low-cost …
Carbon Nanotube Interconnect Modeling For Very Large Scale Integrated Circuits, Yao Xu
Carbon Nanotube Interconnect Modeling For Very Large Scale Integrated Circuits, Yao Xu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this research, we have studied and analyzed the physical and electrical properties of carbon nanotubes. Based on the reported models for current transport behavior in non-ballistic CNT-FETs, we have built a dynamic model for non-ballistic CNT-FETs. We have also extended the surface potential model of a non-ballistic CNT-FET to a ballistic CNT-FET and developed a current transport model for ballistic CNT-FETs. We have studied the current transport in metallic carbon nanotubes. By considering the electron-electron interactions, we have modified two-dimensional fluid model for electron transport to build a semi-classical one-dimensional fluid model to describe the electron transport in carbon …

Point-Of-Care Immunoassay System Using Carbon Nanotube Labels, Adeyabeba Abera
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The goal of this research was to develop enhanced signal detection mechanisms for immunosensing using carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The utilization of CNT labels for direct electrical measurement was implemented on lateral flow system and microfluidic integrated interdigitated array microelectrodes. These sensing mechanisms in simple and miniaturized system provided higher sensitivity and autonomous flow control for rapid detection aimed at point-of-care diagnostics. Specific functionalization protocols were carried out to chemically modify the surface of the CNTs for uniform dispersion and antibody conjugation in aqueous solution. Surfactant assisted dispersion of the CNTs was studied using PVP and PEG. Covalent conjugation of antibodies …
The Weakening Of Branch Predictor Performance As An Inevitable Side Effect Of Exploiting Control Independence, Christopher Joseph Michael
The Weakening Of Branch Predictor Performance As An Inevitable Side Effect Of Exploiting Control Independence, Christopher Joseph Michael
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Many algorithms are inherently sequential and hard to explicitly parallelize. Cores designed to aggressively handle these problems exhibit deeper pipelines and wider fetch widths to exploit instruction-level parallelism via out-of-order execution. As these parameters increase, so does the amount of instructions fetched along an incorrect path when a branch is mispredicted. Many of the instructions squashed after a branch are control independent, meaning they will be fetched regardless of whether the candidate branch is taken or not. There has been much research in retaining these control independent instructions on misprediction of the candidate branch. This research shows that there is …

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) create a new frontier in collecting and processing data from remote locations. The IEEE 802.15.4 wireless personal area network-low rate (WPAN-LR) WSNs rely on hardware simplicity to make sensor field deployments both affordable and long-lasting without maintenance support. WSN designers strive to extend network lifetimes while meeting application-specific throughput and latency requirements. Effective power management places sensor nodes (or motes) into one of the available energy-saving modes based upon the sleep period duration and the current state of the radio. The newest generation of WPAN-LR-based sensor platform radios operates at a 250 kbps data rate and …

The Effect Of Curvature Rate On The Received Power In Parabolic Reflector, Amean Al_Safi
Amean S Al_Safi
In this paper we study the effect of curvature rate on the generated electric field at the focus point if the frequency and diameter are constants .We assume that the incident electromagnetic waves distributed uniformly on each point of the reflector surface ;hence we can imagine that this reflector has uniform surface charge ,and this body will generate an electric field on all points in front of it (including the focus point) . This field can be obtained by using coulomb’s law .The derived expression for electric field show that X and Y components will vanish and the electric field …

100nm Thick Aluminum Nitride Based Piezoelectric Nano Switches Exhibiting 1mv Threshold Voltage Via Body-Biasing, Nipun Sinha, Zhijun Guo, Valeriy Felmetsger, Gianluca Piazza
Nipun Sinha
This paper reports on the first demonstration of aluminum nitride (AlN) piezoelectric logic switches that were fabricated with ultra-thin (100nm) AlN films and exhibit a 1 mV threshold voltage via the body-biasing scheme. The application of a relatively low (< 6 V) fixed potential to the body terminal of a 4-terminal switch has resulted in a repeatable threshold voltage of 1 mV. The nano-switch has been cycled to > 109 cycles and, although the contact resistance was found to be high (~ 1 MΩ), the nano-films have functioned throughout to show high piezoelectric nano-film reliability.

This paper reports on the design and experimental verification of a new class of thin-film (250 nm) super-high-frequency laterally-vibrating piezoelectric microelectromechanical (MEMS) resonators suitable for the fabrication of narrow-band MEMS filters operating at frequencies above 3 GHz. The device dimensions have been opportunely scaled both in the lateral and vertical dimensions to excite a contour-extensional mode of vibration in nanofeatures of an ultra-thin (250 nm) AlN film. In this first demonstration, 2-port resonators vibrating up to 4.5 GHz have been fabricated on the same die and attained electromechanical coupling, kt2, in excess of 1.5%. These devices are employed to synthesize …

This paper reports, for the first time, on the demonstration of low voltage and functionally complete logic elements (NAND and NOR) implemented by using body-biased complementary and ultra-thin (250 nm thick) Aluminum Nitride (AlN) based piezoelectric mechanical switches. This work presents, firstly, the importance of scaling AlN films for the demonstration of ultra-thin AlN switches and, secondly, the implementation of a new actuation scheme based on body biasing to lower the switch threshold voltage. Four of these ultra-thin switches were connected together to synthesize functionally complete MEMS logic gates (NAND and NOR) with a ± 2V swing and a body-bias …

Upper Bounds On The Number Of Channels To Ensure Collision-Free Communications In Multi-Channel Wireless Networks Using Directional Antennas, Hong-Ning Dai, Kam-Wing Ng, Min-You Wu
Hong-Ning Dai
Recent studies have found that using multiple channels can separate concurrent transmissions and significantly improve network throughput. However, these studies have only considered wireless nodes that are equipped with omni-directional antennas, which have high interference. On the other hand, other researchers have found that using directional antennas in wireless networks can reduce interference and improve the network performance. But their studies have only considered single channel to be used in wireless networks with directional antennas. Thus, integrating the two technologies of multiple channels and directional antennas together can potentially bring more benefits. Some previous works have studies the capacity on …

Diagnosing Intermittent And Persistent Faults Using Static Bayesian Networks, Ole J. Mengshoel, Brian Ricks
Ole J Mengshoel
Both intermittent and persistent faults may occur in a wide range of systems. We present in this paper the introduction of intermittent fault handling techniques into ProDiagnose, an algorithm that previously only handled persistent faults. We discuss novel algorithmic techniques as well as how our static Bayesian networks help diagnose, in an integrated manner, a range of intermittent and persistent faults. Through experiments with data from the ADAPT electrical power system test bed, generated as part of the Second International Diagnostic Competition (DXC-10), we show that this novel variant of ProDiagnose diagnoses intermittent faults accurately and quickly, while maintaining strong …

This paper reports on the design and experimental verification of a new class of nanoscale gravimetric sensors based on ultra-thin-film AlN Contour-Mode Resonant Sensor (CMR-S) functionalized with ss-DNA and connected to a chip-based self-sustaining oscillator loop (fabricated in the ON Semiconductor 0.5 μm CMOS process) for direct frequency read-out. The 220 MHz oscillator based on the ultra-thin AlN CMR-S exhibits an Allan Variance of ∼20 Hz for 100 ms gate time. The sensor affinity for the adsorption of volatile organic chemicals such as 2,6 dinitroluene (DNT, a simulant for explosive vapors) is enhanced by functionalizing the top gold electrode of …
