The fast development of LED and its applications has enabled a new generation of lighting device with higher efficiency and long lifespan. By employing a primary-side sensing flyback converter and the PIC18F micro-controller series, an LED driver could achieve two important features: (1) the compatibility with the available lighting fixtures, and (2) reducing unit price. Light incident on metal nanoparticles induce localized surface oscillations of conductive electrons, called plasmons, which is a means to control and manipulate light. Excited plasmons decay as either thermal energy as absorbed phonons or electromagnetic energy as scattered photons. An additional decay pathway for plasmons can exist for gold nanoparticles situated on graphene. Excited plasmons can decay directly to the graphene as through hot electron transfer. In this thesis, a machine learning based method is proposed to predict the putt outcomes of golfers based on their electroencephalogram (EEG) data. The method can be used as a core building block of a brain-computer interface, which is designed to provide guidance to golf players based on their EEG patterns. Such approach has a significant predictive power and might serve as a guide to new experimental works. Room temperature operation is considered one of the essential restrictions in the design of electronic devices. Photodetectors are unable to detect light efficiently at room temperature due to high dark currents. Semiconductor nanocrystals possess unique optical and electrical properties which make them ideal for fabricating uncooled photodetectors. In this project, nanocrystals were synthesized and implemented in devices that detect light at room temperature.

Nanocrystalline I-III-VI2 and II-VI semiconductors (CuInS2 and CdSe) were grown by a wet chemical method, and characterized using: optical absorption, photoluminescence, Raman scattering, and x-ray diffraction. The broadband suppression in reflection is one of the primary focuses in high efficiency solar cell research. In this thesis, a moth-eye inspired nanostructure antireflection coating is fabricated on InAs/GaAs quantum dots solar cell in order to enhance the power conversion efficiency. The abrupt refractive index transition between air and GaAs surface is replaced by a tapering zinc oxide nanoneedle on planar tantalum pentoxide coating. The antireflection structure provides gradual reduction of refractive index away from the solar cell top surface.

The scope of this thesis investigates the effectiveness of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) at improving the material quality of GaAsBi/GaAs heterostructures. Unique microfluidic control actuated by simply turning off and on microfabricated electrodes in a small-volume system was investigated for lab-on-a-chip applications. This was accomplished using a relatively new pumping technique of redox-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), which as shown in this dissertation generated the important microfluidic features of flat flow profile and fluid circulation. Water-soluble Quantum Dots (QDs) are highly sensitive fluorescent probes that are often used to study biological species. One of the most common ways to render QDs water-soluble for such applications is to apply hydrophilic thiolated ligands to the QD surface. However, these ligands are labile and can be easily exchanged on the QD surface, which can severely limit their application. Incorporating plasmonic structures into the back spacer layer of thin film solar cells (TFSCs) is an efficient way to improve their performance. The fishnet structure; which is a tunable, plasmonic light scatterer is used to enhance light absorption. Unlike other plasmonic particles that have been previously suggested, the fishnet is an electrically connected wire mesh and does not result in electric field localization, hence it results in greater absorption in the intrinsic Si layer. Current state-of-the-art emergency response systems rely on satellite radio-enabled devices, but survivors, unlike first responders, do not have access to such devices. To mitigate this problem, we present PERPETUU a solar-powered portable GIS microserver. A novel reconfigurable digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with supply independent linearity is presented. The process agnostic converter achieves wide supply range operation and re-configurability by being charge based. This converter consists of a 7-bit parallel digital input control core and an analog "summing" core utilizing charging capacitors with an operational transconductance amplifier in a voltage-follower configuration. Asynchronous logic, in the past several years, has increased in popularity due to its low power nature. It provides a brief comparison between different HVdc technologies, focusing on voltage source converters (HVdc-VSC) with the MMC-based terminal emerging as the topology of choice for ratings less than 1 GW. The controllers for a two-terminal HVdc-link are analyzed and Matlab/SimulinkTM simulation models are presented. This thesis presents an implementation of a method developed to readily convert Boolean designs into an ultra-low power asynchronous design methodology called MTNCL, which combines multi-threshold CMOS (MTCMOS) with NULL Convention Logic (NCL) systems. MTNCL provides the leakage power advantages of an all high-Vt implementation with a reasonable speed penalty compared to the all low-Vt implementation, and has negligible area overhead.
