This dissertation is devoted to developing multiple access interference (MAI) reduction techniques for multi-carrier multi-user wireless communication networks.

In multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems, a full multipath diversity can be achieved by transmitting one symbol over multiple orthogonal subcarriers by means of spreading codes. However, in frequency selective fading channels, orthogonality among users can be destroyed leading to MAI. MAI represents the main obstacle to support large number of users in multi-user wireless systems. Large variations in temperature have a distinct impact on electron mobilities causing substantial changes to the threshold voltage of the devices. A new material of highly-phosphorus doped silicon for device applications was characterized and analyzed for new material properties. Devices such as NMOS transistors and other CMOS compatible devices may benefit from new materials that reduce external resistances and increase drive currents.

Material characterization requires numerous techniques and technologies to determine electrical, optical, and physical characteristics. For this work, Hall measurement, X-ray Diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy, Photoluminescence Characterization, and Spectroscopic Ellipsometry were used to better understand this new material. The results may lead to new models for silicon phosphorus alloys.

In this dissertation, a method and a tool to enable design and verification of computation demanding embedded vision-based systems is presented. Starting with an executable specification in OpenCV, we provide subsequent refinements and verification down to a system-on-chip prototype into an FPGA-Based smart camera. At each level of abstraction, properties of image processing applications are used along with structure composition to provide a generic architecture that can be automatically verified and mapped to the lower abstraction level. Passivating silicon solar cell surfaces is critical to fabricating very high efficiency and low cost photovoltaic devices. The sun-facing surface of the solar cell, known as the emitter, is particularly important when designing a solar cell. This work focused first on an alternative method of forming the emitter of silicon solar cells, and secondly on a method for improving the surface passivation of both these non-traditional and standard n-type solar cells.

This thesis presents the results of research targeted at automating the behavioral modeling process for switching voltage regulators. These regulators are commonly used in many application areas including discrete use in larger systems, integrated in a System on a Chip (SoC), or as the primary use case for a design. When used in an integrated system these regulators can be a significant force in slowing down simulations. A common method for removing this slowdown is to use a behavioral model of the switching regulator.

This dissertation presents a thorough analysis of semiconducting Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube-based devices, followed by a test structure fabrication and measurements.

The analysis starts by developing an individual nanotube model, which is then generalized for many nanotubes and adding the parasitic elements. The parasitic elements appear when forming the device electrodes degrade the overall performance.

The continuum model of an individual nanotube is developed. A unique potential function is presented to effectively describe the electron distribution in the carbon nanotube subsequently facilitating solving Schrödinger's equation to obtain the energy levels, and to generalize the model for many nanotubes.

In this work, micro-Hall devices were developed for the purpose of sensing current within a high temperature and high power environment. GaAs HEMT, InGaAs pHEMT, and GaN HEMT structures were studied. These structures were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Processing techniques including photolithography, metallization, Si deposition, wet etching, and dry etching were studied. Electrical characterization measurements including low frequency noise, Hall effect, sensitivity, capacitance-voltage, and current-voltage were performed.

Electron mobility and sheet carrier density studies were performed for both the InGaAs pHEMT and GaAs HEMT structures. Results indicated the InGaAs pHEMT was superior and thus fabricated as the micro-Hall device. …

The goal of this thesis is to understand possible mechanisms for the reported decrease of the open circuit voltage and solar cell efficiency in quantum dot (QD) intermediate band solar cells (IBSCs). More specifically, the effect of indium arsenide (InAs) QD height on the open circuit voltage and solar cell efficiency was studied in a systematic way. The electronics industry has a large silicon infrastructure for the manufacture of complementary-metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) based electronics. The increasing density of Si based circuits has set a pace that is now pushing the physical limits of connectivity between devices over conventional wire based links. The objective of this work was to conduct basic research in biologically inspired energy conversion solutions. A photosynthetic protein (Bacteriorhodopsin) was reconstituted in a bi-layer membrane. Then, when a laser beam was shined on the membrane, the photon energy was used by the protein to pump protons across the membrane. The translocation of protons across the membrane was measured as photocurrent. For this purpose, a system was built to characterize the lipid bilayer membranes and to measure the photocurrent. This thesis presents the design, simulation, layout and test results of a silicon carbide (SiC) CMOS two-stage operational amplifier (op amp) with NMOS input stage. The circuit has been designed to provide a stable open-loop voltage gain (60 dB), unity-gain bandwidth (around 5 MHz) and maintain a high CMRR and PSRR within a useful input common mode range over process corners and a wide temperature range (25 °C - 300 °C). It offers several advantages, including wider temperature range, larger critical electric field, and greater radiation immunity with respect to Silicon (Si). At the same time, it suffers from challenges in fabrication consistency and lower transconductance which the designer must overcome.
