The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) Has in Recent Years Become an Important Tool to the Engineer. There Are a Number of Algorithms Which Calculate the FFT. One Such Algorithm is the Cooley-Tukey FFT Algorithm (Radix-2) Which Lends itself Rather Easily to a Combination Software and Hardware Implementation. with a Microcomputer as the Controller of a Data Acquisition Module and Hardware Which Computes the Butterfly Associated with the FFT Algorithm, the FFT Can Be Calculated Efficiently. © 1979 IEEE

The front surface of a p-n junction solar cell has resistive losses associated with the diffused layer, the metal-semiconductor contact, and the grid structure. These losses are analyzed by considering the spatially distributed nature of the p-n junction and the grid conductors. This distributed diode analysis is especially useful for solar cells operated under concentrated sunlight conditions. The results show the dependence of the V-I characteristics and the maximum power output per unit cell on the ratio of the diffused layer resistance to the junction dynamic resistance. Vehicle Detection Using A Magnetic Field Sensor, Stanley V. Marshall

The measurement of vehicle magnetic moments and the results from use of a fluxgate magnetic sensor to actuate a lighting system from the magnetic fields of passing vehicles is reported. A typical U.S. automobile has a magnetic moment of about 200 A-m2(Ampere-meters2), while for a school bus it is about 2000 A-m2. When the vehicle is modeled as an ideal magnetic dipole with a moment of 200 A-m2, the predicted results from an analysis of the sensor-vehicle geometry agree closely with observations of the system response to automobiles. A First-Order Predictor Routine and an Encoding Routine Were Implemented on an Intel-8080-Based Microprocessor System to Determine their Ability to Compress Seismic Data. the Predictor Routine Obtained a Maximum Compression Ratio of 2.33. It Appears that Higher Order Predictors Offer No Significant Advantage over the First-Order Predictor in Compressing Seismic Data. the Encoder Routine Obtained a Larger Compression Ratio of 3.94. the Accuracy of Reconstructed Seismic Traces is Bounded by a Maximum Average Error Per Point. for the Predictor, the Maximum Average Error Per Point is Shown to Be Equal to the Specified User Tolerance. for the Encoder, It is …

This paper describes the use of equalization in conjunction with channel filtering to improve QPSK transmission subject to both InterSymbol interference (ISI) and interchange interference (ICI). Performance bounds are computed using the nonclassical Gauss-quadrature rule (GQR) method. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain due to linear equalization over Non equalization is thereby obtained and presented. The performance of a linear equalizer thus obtained is compared with the Viterbi algorithm sequence estimator (VASE). In the absence of bounds for the VASE receiver under the channel conditions considered, simulation results are used to make the comparison. With a possible difference in the accuracies …

A toroidal core may be used with an inverter circuit to measure magnetic fields in the 0.8 to 80,000 A/m (.01 to 1.0 KOe) range. The sensor core may be the inverter transformer itself or may be coupled to a Non saturating inverter transformer. The sensor is most sensitive to fields parallel to the plane of the sensor and the sensitivity is greatest for a core biased to near saturation. An empirical expression for the demagnetization factor is used in calculating the ambient field required to saturate the sensor core, making it possible to calculate the range of fields for …

Registration by integral-square error correlation of one-dimensional Discrete Time waveforms which are treated as random processes with specified autocorrelation functions is considered. An important design parameter for this class of problems is the probability of anomaly (a false dip in the correlation function) because it gives an indication of system immunity to gross registration errors. Explicit expressions for this parameter are not possible, so bounds and approximations must be derived. Two upper bounds and an approximation for the probability of anomaly are derived here. The detection of two-dimensional optical signals which have been corrupted by noise is considered. Discussion is limited to the detection of a known object in a known location. The problem is approached from the classical statistical technique of hypothesis testing. Initially the solution is formulated in very general terms. The decision rule is derived for a signal distorted by noise of an unspecified type which may include signal dependent noise. Once the decision rule is obtained, the probabilities of false alarm and detection are evaluated from a priori knowledge of the noise and imaging system. The general results are applied …

A technique for utilizing on-board sensed horizon profiles and computer stored reference horizon profiles to provide navigation check points for low-altitude aircraft is described. The technique has been analyzed using digitized terrain data and computer simulations to select the best method of horizon profile comparison, to determine horizon data density requirements, and to provide performance comparisons, system error limitations, and tradeoffs. Open-delta/open-delta and open-wye/open-delta transformer banks are often used as an economic means of supplying simultaneous single-phase and 3-phase loads in rural areas. If the 3-phase load is an induction motor, the inherent voltage unbalance causes increased losses and uneven heating that may lead to motor failure. Often these motors are submersible or deep well pump motors located in remote unattended areas or air conditioning motors which may not have sufficient over-design to handle the voltage unbalance. The discrete complex Kalman filter is considered as an equalizer for quadrature phase-shift keyed (QPSK) systems in the presence of additive noise and InterSymbol interference (ISI). When the channel is unknown, an adaptive Kalman equalizer is used in which the channel complex tap gains are estimated by decision feedback. This Paper Shows that, under Certain Weak Restrictions, a Two-Dimensional Discrete Markov Process Can Be Represented Either "Causally" by a One-Sided Difference Equation, or "Non causally" by a Multiple-Sided Difference Equation. the Former Representation is Pertinent to the Analysis of Image Coders and Processors that Operate Sequentially on Scanned Image Data. the Latter Representation is Applicable to the Analysis of Block Coders and Processors. the General Relation between the Two Representations is Given and the Specialized Forms Resulting under Separable Scene Covariance Studied. Computer Modeling Of The Statistical Properties Of Transionospheric Scintillation Channels, W. F. Deckelman, Rodger E. Ziemer

This concise paper shows that a bandlimited bivariate-normal time series is a useful model for the envelope of scintillating radio signals traversing the ionosphere. A software model is presented whose generated time series is compared to an actual block of scintillation data. A comparison of computer-generated and actual scintillation data shows that the fade-duration distribution of the simulated data fits that of the actual data closely through proper choice of model parameters. This Paper Defines an M-Ary Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (MGLRT) that overcomes Root's Early Objection to the Application of Generalized Likelihood Ratio Testing to the Resolution of Correlated Signals. the Proposed Test Extends the Form of a Conventional Binary Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) in a Manner that Permits a Generalization of the Minimax Properties of the Binary Test to the M-Hypotheses Case. When the Estimated Signals Are Orthogonal, the Test Reduces to a Sequence of Conventional Binary Tests Duplicating the Performance of a Narrow-Band Matched Filter Envelope-Detector Receiver. © 1975, IEEE. The technique and the relative advantages of maximum entropy spectrum analysis have been discussed by Burg [1], [2]. Evaluation of the inverse Fourier transform of the maximum entropy spectrum shows that this method does, indeed, correspond to a reasonable nonzero extension of the autocorrelation function.

A computer-automated laboratory system at the University of Missouri-Rolla, Rolla, which serves a wide variety of instruction and research disciplines including Geophysics, Cloud Physics, and Computer Graphics, is described. The system serves as an example for campuses which are relatively small in geographic area and with budget limitations which dictate a step-by-step evolution. The paper describes 1) the constraints and economics realized in the development of the system, 2) the characteristics of the minicomputer network, and 3) an evaluation of the system philosophy and performance.
