A method for estimating wavenumber and propagation direction for the dominant wave component in an ocean wave field from a few scans of synthetic aperture radar data is described and analyzed. The use of just a few radar scans rather than a complete image reduces data storage requirements significantly. The analysis shown uses actual synthetic aperture radar data and provides parameter tradeoffs and statistical performance results. While reasonable estimates of wavenumber and propagation direction are achieved in some cases, the estimates are not sufficiently consistent to be satisfactory over a wide range of cases. The bond graph technique, which has been related almost entirely to the field of mechanics, is a modeling procedure where emphasis is placed on the flow of power and energy in a system. Through specific digital simulation programs such as ENPORT IV and V and THTSIM the state space representation, associated output equations and system dynamic response are directly obtainable from the bond graphs. Effective electric system operation depends on strengthening the relationship between the system operator and the electrical system with its associated control system. This relationship can be developed through a training medium which increases the operator's knowledge of the behavior of the power system under various operating conditions and contingencies, and its response to control actions. An Operator Training Simulator (OTS), which simulates the static and dynamic responses of the operator's power system and his control system, can accomplish these training objectives. After an extended cold weather outage on a distribution circuit supplying a high saturation of electrical space heating, large transient overcurrent's persist for several hours because of the undiversified heating load. In this paper, the electrical space heating component of enduring demand is characterized by a smooth curve. Expressions are derived for the parameters of the curve in terms of the outage conditions and a statistical description of the residences. A method is suggested for using this characterization to determine the effects of a cold load pick up on the distribution circuit components. Copyright © 1982 by The Institute of …

Whenever control laws are computed on the basis of linear optimal control theory and implemented on non-linear systems, such as power systems, the performance is not as good as expected because of saturation type non-linearities in the system components. The only way to ensure that a control law is adequate, short of actually testing the real system, is to observe the simulated behavior of the system. Departure between a calculated linear control law and the actual response can be minimized by (a) computing a feedback control law with gains of small magnitudes to achieve a pre-assigned set of eigenvalues for …

Serial minimum-shift keyed (MSK) modulation, a technique for generating and detecting MSK using series filtering, is ideally suited for high data rate applications provided the required conversion and matched filters can be closely approximated. Low-pass implementations of these filters as parallel inphase-and quadrature-mixer structures are characterized in this paper in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) degradation from ideal and envelope deviation. Several hardware implementation techniques utilizing microwave devices or lumped elements are presented. Optimization of parameter values results in realizations whose SNR degradation is less than 0.5 dB at error probabilities of 10-6. © 1982 IEEE

We report the spray pyrolysis of thin films of CdTe which show promise as a base material for solar cell applications. The films predominately show a zinc blende structure and appear to be intrinsic. Microprobe analysis indicates an excess of cadmium but this is not detectable by X-ray diffraction or from electrical conduction measurements. Measurements indicate a nominal direct bandgap of 1.47 eV and an absorption coefficient of the order of 104 cm−1. The room temperature electrical resistivity is of the order of 107 Ω cm.

We report very intense photoluminescence in spray-pyrolyzed CdTe at 77 K. We also notice striking similarities in the luminescence spectra, decay, and temperature dependence between CdTe and other thin-film semiconductors, which we interpret in terms of recombination at defect sites in intergranular regions.

Current pathways and reconstructions of human injury after contact with distribution powerlines are not well understood. The impedance, currents, and modes of tissue destruction are rarely known. Eight anesthetized hogs, weighing 68 to 90 kg, were used in studies with potentials ranging from 2,100 to 14,400 volts. Electrical contact was made between the hindlimbs, from the hindlimb to forelimb, and over other regions of the body. Currents from 4 to 70 amperes rms and impedances ranging from 130 to 477 ohms were measured. Phase angles up to 40° were observed. Copyright © 1981 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics …

The paper shows how the normally generated third-harmonic voltage can be used to protect the lower ten to twenty percent of generator stator windings against ground faults. A method of determining the applicability of the scheme to a given machine is described which takes into account the design of the generator and its externally connected apparatus. The effects of finite resistence ground faults are also investigated and other advantages of the scheme, such as protection of the neutral, are also highlighted. The problem of creating a practical computational tool to perform transient contingency analysis in a power system control center is considered. The computer program developed may be used in a control center computer where a state estimation program or a consistent set of load flow data is available. It can be run on a periodic basis over a previously specified contingency list, or it can be called by the system operator to analyze a particular contingency. The transient behavior of the system is evaluated based on a simulation technique widely acknowledged for its fast solutions. The method uses rapidly convergent …

The use of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to enhance the detection of moving targets in ground clutter is examined. The improvement factor, defined as the signal-to-clutter ratio at the DFT processor output compared with that of the input, is given as a function of normalized clutter spectral width for various weighting functions on the DFT input. This paper reports an experimental investigation of surface electromagnetic wave (SEW) energy distribution on railroad tracks. Radial field distribution of SEW on 112-lb/yd rails were examined utilizing a dipole diode detector. Laboratory and on-site measurements were made. The field strength distribution data at frequencies 3.000, 6.000, and 9.733 GHz show that the main part of the SEW TE mode energy (almost 90 percent) is on the head of the rail. Use of dielectric augmentation on the side of rails resulted in lower attenuation of the propagating SEW. Thick dielectric strip augmentation data shows enhancement of SEW propagation in agreement with …

An Improved Technique For Calibrating And Testing Power System Generator Automatic Synchronizing And Speed Matching Relays, David C. Nagy, Earl F. Richards

The design of a unique special purpose instrument for calibrating and testing power system automatic synchronizing and speed matching relays is described. The unit is constructed using inexpensive integrated circuit components and provides a direct digital readout of slip frequency from 0.05 Hz to 0.50 Hz resolution and advance angle from 0 to 99.9 degrees with 0.1-degree resolution. This device eliminates the need for expensive test equipment previously required, expedites the test procedure and solves the problem of referencing against a variable bus frequency source. A simple method for generating digital terrain surfaces as a function of only the terrain standard deviation is presented. This is accomplished by fitting a postulated autocorrelation model to actual terrain data. Observed relations between model parameters are used to obtain a one-parameter model. A New Technique for Reducing Transmission Error Propagation in Adaptively Predicted, dpcm‐encoded Pictures is Described. the Basis for the Technique is a Generalization of the Notion of Predictor Output Attenuation, Described by Graham, to Include Attenuation of the Adaptive Prediction Function. This Paper Introduces a Nonstationary Model for Images and Develops an Adaptive Intrafield Dpcm Codec based Upon the Model. the Codec Attempts to Minimize the Mean‐square Coding Error at Each Sample Point in the Picture. the Quantizer in the Resulting Adaptive Codec is Found to Be Similar to that Previously Obtained from Visual Masking Considerations. Comparative Simulation Results using 256 X 256 Pixel Rasters Are Given for Two‐ and Three‐bit/pixel Versions of the Adaptive Codec, the Three‐bit/pixel Graham Codec, and Three‐bit/pixel Previous Element Dpcm. © 1979 the Bell System Technical Journal
