A diagnostic technique has been developed which allows recording of the temporal and spatial development of electric field structures in GaAs photoconductive switches. The optical method is based on the Franz-Keldysh effect. Measurements were performed with a Nd:YAG activation laser and a GaAs laser diode as the probe laser. At low applied voltages a 100 atm wide region of high electric field is seen at the cathode only. With increasing voltage strong domain like structures emerge at the anode also. A calibration measurement shows that the electric fields in these domains are well above 50 kV/cm. At a threshold voltage, …

Fiber optic sensors are widely used in today's technological applications, providing many advantages that conventional sensors lack. In particular, there is a demand in hypersonic applications to develop microphones to measure acoustic pressure that performs in high temperature and noisy surroundings. This thesis analyzes fiber optic lever microphones (FOLM), since they perform at high temperatures. An FOLM system is an intensity modulated sensor, which is simple to implement and is small in size. Diffusion of copper in silicon doped gallium arsenide under different diffusion conditions is studied. Copper compensated silicon doped gallium arsenide (GaAs:Si:Cu) is used as switch material for bulk optically controlled semiconductor switch, and on-state photoconductivity of the switch is primarily due to the properties of the copper deep levels introduced in the material during diffusion. In particular, the behavior of the system during recovery and restoration after a fault has occurred is investigated. The most important property of an automated mechanical system is reliable execution of a specified task. Automated mechanical systems work best in precisely structured environments where all operations are repeatable. Typically, these systems are difficult to modify and expensive to install. Sensors can be used to detect disturbances, thus reducing hardware cost by offsetting the need for precise rigid construction components. Sensors, however, increase the complexity and cost of the control software. In this dissertation, a new technique based on analytic geometry for the recognition and description of three-dimensional quadric surfaces from range images is presented. Beginning with the explicit representation of quadrics, a set of ten coefficients are determined for various three-dimensional surfaces. For each quadric surface, a unique set of two-dimensional curves which serve as a feature set is obtained from the various angles at which the object is intersected with a plane. The performance of GaAs and diamond as electron-beam controlled closing and opening switches has been studied. An emphasis has been placed on the effect of contacts on the current-voltage characteristics. The two materials studied were GaAs and diamond. Using the same semi-insulating GaAs wafer as a source of material, a bulk device and a p-i-n device have been fabricated and compared. The asymmetry of the pin diode allows operation at higher voltage because of the ability to suppress the lock-on effect. This thesis presents an application of artificial neural networks in real-time resource reallocation, a methodology used in the implementation of an intelligent interface node in the Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) environment. In particular, the problem is formulated using a Hopfield neural network model. The real-time reallocation problem is mapped into a two-dimensional matrix of neurons similar to Hopfield and Tank's approach to the traveling salesman problem (TSP) . An improved photo induced current transient spectroscopy (PICTS) technique is developed for studying deep level parameters in high-resistivity semiconductor materials. A new digital data acquisition approach and improvement in the cryogenics of the system have enabled us, for the first time in our laboratory, to detect CuA level in a copper doped silicon compensated gallium arsenide (GaAs:Si:Cu) sample. This dissertation introduces a binary partitioned approach to statistical pattern classification which is applied to talker identification using neural networks. In recent years artificial neural networks have been shown to work exceptionally well for small but difficult pattern classification tasks. However, their application to large tasks (i.e., having more than ten to 20 categories) is limited by a dramatic increase in required training time. The time required to train a single network to perform N-way classification is nearly proportional to the exponential of N. Teaching the hearing-impaired to speak is both a challenging and rewarding task. Computer-based training aids are valuable teaching tools and complement the speech therapist in the speech training process. We have developed a computer based vowel articulation training aid designed to provide visual feedback for vowel production to the hearing-impaired user. This system transforms speech spectra from a multi-dimensional acoustic space to a two-dimensional phonetic space which is displayed on a computer monitor. Formants are the natural frequencies of the human vocal tract. Existing methods for estimating formants from speech signals are computationally complex and subject to errors for certain type of speech sounds. This thesis describes a method for estimating vowel formant frequencies from Discrete Cosine Transform Coefficients (DCTC's), a form of cepstral coefficients, using a feedforward neural network with back-propagation training. Experimental results are based on a large multispeaker data base. The results are obtained for both a linear transformation and a feedforward neural network with a nonlinear hidden layer. We discuss topics in the theory of nonlinear stochastic control, estimation, and decision via a probabilistic approach using measure transformations and martingale theory. First, we investigate the problem of estimating a diffusion process using coordinate transformations and measure transformations, both locally and globally; this is the analog of nonlinear coordinate and state feedback transformations used to obtain exact linearization in nonlinear deterministic control problems. Our results are new in that we use a probabilistic approach rather than a purely geometric one, and also in that we derive representations when the processes are defined locally rather than just globally. Cathodoluminescence in Zn doped GaAs and ZnSe, the materials of interest for electron-beam controlled semiconductor switches, has been investigated. A new diagnostic technique, using telescopic setup of lenses, was developed to study the spatially resolved cathodoluminescence. The setup eliminated the light, other than rays from the sample, parallel to the optical axis, resulting in an enhanced spatial resolution. At high e-beam energies, light was detected, from the Zn layer region in the GaAs. It is proposed to be due to the radiative recombination of electron-hole pairs, created by the e-beam. For the polycrystalline ZnSe no light emission was detected. This …

Cathodoluminescence of band-gap radiation across the bulk of a proposed semiconductor switch has been studied. Such a device relies on the efficient use of cathodoluminescence to modulate the conductivity of the switch. Diagnostics were configured to measure the intensity of band-gap radiation across the bulk of several switch samples. The measured results were compared to calculations based on a four energy level band-gap model which included two deep levels EL2 and HL10.

Research is undertaken to apply high temperature superconducting material to improve the quality factor (Q) of a 5.2 GHz cylindrical resonant cavity. In particular, the approach is to electrophoretically deposit polycrystalline Y1Ba2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) on the conducting surface of the cavity cylinder. Spalling of the YBCO ceramic coating due to expansion and contraction of the cavity during sintering and testing is overcome by segmenting the cylinder. Results show that the Q of the cavity is increased over that of a copper cavity at temperatures below 60 K. At 20 K, improvement exceeds a factor …

This thesis investigates a digital gas filter correlation radiometer called the Tropospheric Radiometer for Atmospheric Chemistry and Environmental Research (TRACER), which will be used to remotely measure carbon monoxide at three levels in the troposphere. The nadir-viewing radiometer measures the differential absorption of radiation through the atmosphere at 4.67@m and 2.33pm wavelengths. This thesis develops an analytical model of the TRACER measurement process to evaluate the effect of varying certain system parameters on the measurement. In a low pressure discharge, if the cathode incorporates a cylindrical or slit shaped hole, the discharge current can be several orders of magnitude higher than in one with plane parallel electrodes under the same pressure and voltage conditions. In this work hollow cathode discharges in Helium under the influence of variable parameters such as gas pressure, applied voltage, electrode gap spacing, external magnetic field, etc., are investigated by means of electrical and optical diagnostic techniques.

Erasable optical memory systems with a high storage density and a large data transfer rate are required for many real time data acquisition systems such as those placed aboard NASA's space born platforms. A new concept for erasable optical memory involving stimulated electronic transitions (SET) will meet these requirements. Research and development is presented of real time signal processing methodologies for the detection of fetal heart tones within a noise-contaminated signal from a passive acoustic sensor. A linear predictor algorithm is utilized for detection of the heart tone event and additional processing derives heart rate. The linear predictor is adaptively "trained" in a least mean square error sense on generic fetal heart tones recorded from patients. Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out to investigate the performance of microwave Gunn oscillators. Three separate aspects of the simulation problem have been comprehensively addressed in this work. First, the presence of an external circuit has been self-consistently incorporated into the calculations. The inclusion of the external circuit facilitates a study of the circuit controlled regime, and correctly models effects arising from the time dependent boundary conditions. Secondly, microscopic details of the electronic relaxation mechanisms which ultimately control the frequency response limits, have been taken into account through an iterative Monte Carlo-Poisson scheme. A model for the interactions of hydrogen and carbon pellets with thermonuclear fusion plasmas has been developed and solved to determine the charge-state spatial distributions in the ablation cloud surrounding the pellet. The ionization is treated in a self-consistent manner in the energy balance and the collisional radiative (CR) model is used to calculate the ionization levels. External plasma electron effects on ionization are included. The electron heat flux is modeled as a multigroup distribution. The goal of this research was to investigate deep levels in different types of GaAs, a material for high power optically controlled bulk semiconductor switches. For low resistivity semiconductors, such as silicon doped GaAs material (p =0.054 Ω cm), deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) was used to characterize deep levels. Three deep levels (EL6, EL3, and EL2) have been detected in this material. The primary objective of this study was to compare two sets of vowel spectral features, formants and global spectral shape parameters, as invariant acoustic cues to vowel identity. Both automatic vowel recognition experiments and perceptual experiments were performed to evaluate these two feature sets. The search for the lattice of substitution property (s. p.) partitions essential to decompositions is cast into the framework of constraint satisfaction. A computer-based vowel articulation training aid has been developed. A "continuous" acoustic-phonetic transformation is performed to map speech parameters to a lower dimensionality display space. There are two possible approaches to this transformation problem. The transformation could be either linear or a combination nonlinear/linear. The nonlinear transformation is performed using a multi-layered feedforward neural network with linear output layers. Speech parameters are extracted either from an analog filter bank arrangement (band energies) or by a digital signal processing procedure (Discrete Cosine Transform Coefficients).
