A Compact 1200 V, 700 A, Igbt-Based Pulse Generator For Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation In Vivo Laboratory Experiments On Small Animals, Daniel Senda, Haley Strong, Dustin Hines, Rochelle Hines, R. Jacob Baker
Psychology Faculty Research
An insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) pulse generator for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation used for in vivo laboratory experiments on small animals, such as mice, is reported. The pulse generator is based upon an IGBT that can switch 700 A of current for 1 ms and that has a DC breakdown voltage of 1200 V. The duration of the design’s output pulse is controlled by, and follows, an input trigger pulse. The voltage amplitude of the output pulses is determined by an external high-voltage power supply and the energy stored in a 330 µF capacitor bank. The approach enables the amplitude …

Analysis Of Microscopic Objects Using Computer Vision Methods, Yuan Dao
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
As an essential and powerful tool to observe living organisms, three-dimensional fluorescence microscopy is widely used in biological research and diagnosis. The 4D fluorescence microscopy data can be obtained using time-lapsed videos of 3D images. To analyze and extract useful information from the increasingly large and complex biological image dataset, efficient and effective computational tools are in need but still lagging behind. In analyzing biological data, two major challenges are faced. First, time-lapsed fluorescence microscopic images typically have a low SNR. Second, biological objects often change their morphology and internal structure frequently. As such, conventional image processing methods may not …

Forecasting Pedestrian Trajectory Using Deep Learning, Arsal Syed
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In this dissertation we develop different methods for forecasting pedestrian trajectories. Complete understanding of pedestrian motion is essential for autonomous agents and social robots to make realistic and safe decisions. Current trajectory prediction methods rely on incorporating historic motion, scene features and social interaction to model pedestrian behaviors. Our focus is to accurately understand scene semantics to better forecast trajectories. In order to do so, we leverage semantic segmentation to encode static scene features such as walkable paths, entry/exits, static obstacles etc. We further evaluate the effectiveness of using semantic maps on different datasets and compare its performance with already …

In this work, we classify three types of emotions: positive, negative, and neutral. Two datasets are used in this work. One is an image-based dataset named ‘The City’ that consists of 154 images of infants aged 0-12 months. Another is the Rebel Dataset from the Department of …
Patient-Specific Finite Element Analysis For Mandibular Fracture Fixation, Ethan Snyder
Patient-Specific Finite Element Analysis For Mandibular Fracture Fixation, Ethan Snyder
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis proposes an approach for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of mandibular fracture fixation. Using a Computerized Tomography (CT) scan of mandible obtained from a specific person, the material characteristics, density and modulus of elasticity, were determined from a set of discrete points within the mandible that are 1mm spaced based on the Hounsfield Units of these points. The mandible geometry was sectioned to simulate a fracture. Muscle and mastication forces were added to replicate post-surgery loading. Using a standard linear miniplate, this material model was compared with two commonly used mandibular cortical shell bone models: isotropic and orthotropic. A …

Presence Effects In Virtual Reality Based On User Characteristics: Attention, Enjoyment, And Memory, Si Jung Kim, Teemu H. Laine, Hae Jung Suk
College of Engineering Faculty Research
Presence refers to the emotional state of users where their motivation for thinking and acting arises based on the perception of the entities in a virtual world. The immersion level of users can vary when they interact with different media content, which may result in different levels of presence especially in a virtual reality (VR) environment. This study investigates how user characteristics, such as gender, immersion level, and emotional valence on VR, are related to the three elements of presence effects (attention, enjoyment, and memory). A VR story was created and used as an immersive stimulus in an experiment, which …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
© 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V. part of Springer Nature. The paper presents a generalized composite noncertainty-equivalence adaptive control system for the control of a prototypical aeroelastic wing section using a single trailing-edge control surface. The plunge–pitch (two-degree-of-freedom) dynamics of this aeroelastic system include torsional pitch-axis nonlinearity. The open-loop system exhibits limit cycle oscillations beyond a critical free-stream velocity. It is assumed that parameters of the model are not known. The objective is to suppress the oscillatory responses of the system. Based on the immersion and invariance approach, a generalized composite noncertainty-equivalence adaptive (NCEA) control …

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
© 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. The circular restricted three-body problem (CR3BP) is important from the theoretical as well as a practical viewpoint. In this paper, the objective is to control a spacecraft along stable or unstable libration point orbits. For this purpose, a manifold of constant energy is specified. Then, a Hamiltonian-based state variable feedback control law is designed for regulating the spacecraft to attain the specified level of energy. Through the Lyapunov analysis, asymptotic convergence of the system energy to prescribed level is established. For this multi-dimensional constant energy manifold, a variety of periodic and quasi-periodic libration point …

Neural Networks On An Fpga And The Exploration Of Hardware Friendly Activation Functions, Jiong Si, Sarah L. Harris, Evangelos Yfantis
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
This paper describes our implementation of several neural networks built on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) and used to recognize a handwritten digit dataset—the Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) database. We also propose a novel hardware-friendly activation function called the dynamic Rectifid Linear Unit (ReLU)—D-ReLU function that achieves higher performance than traditional activation functions at no cost to accuracy. We built a 2-layer online training multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network on an FPGA with varying data width. Reducing the data width from 8 to 4 bits only reduces prediction accuracy by 11%, but the FPGA area …
Current-Mode Photon-Counting Circuit With Sige Bicmos Input Stage, Gonzalo Guadalupe Arteaga
Current-Mode Photon-Counting Circuit With Sige Bicmos Input Stage, Gonzalo Guadalupe Arteaga
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Continued advances in photodetector technology have helped improve the imaging capabilities of LiDAR systems or other time-of-flight imaging efforts. As a major part of the receiver within a LiDAR system, the photodetector can offer features such as faster rise times, narrower pulse widths, or larger gains to help achieve greater timing resolution or sensitivity to faint light levels. These benefits, however, are contingent on the ability of the accompanying readout circuit to reliably process the fast, electrical signals generated by the photodetector. While common front-end circuits involve the use of feedback amplifiers, their stability can become a major concern at …

Water Quality Prediction Based On Machine Learning Techniques, Zhao Fu
Water Quality Prediction Based On Machine Learning Techniques, Zhao Fu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Water is one of the most important natural resources for all living organisms on earth. The monitoring of treated wastewater discharge quality is vitally important for the stability and protection of the ecosystem. Collecting and analyzing water samples in the laboratory consumes much time and resources. In the last decade, many machine learning techniques, like multivariate linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) model, have been proposed to address the problem. However, simple linear regression analysis cannot accurately forecast water quality because of complicated linear and nonlinear relationships in the water quality dataset. The ANN model also has shortcomings …

As population and economies continue to grow on a global scale, so too does the demand for energy. To improve reliability and independence of energy supplies, the U.S. and many other countries are seeking internally-sourced renewable energy; solar is one such renewable-energy source that meets these criteria. However, all energy sources exert some environmental impacts. In the case of solar, direct impacts stem mostly from alteration of land needed to host infrastructure. Understanding the environmental upside and downside potential of solar energy systems allows a more comprehensive, side-by-side comparison with different energy sources. In this article, we focus on the …

A Progressive Output Strategy For Real-Time Feedback Control Systems, Qiming Zou, Ling Wang, Jie Liu, Yingtao Jiang
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
The real-time requirements imposed on a feedback control system are often hard to be met, as the controller spends a disproportionately large amount of time waiting for a control cycle to reach its final state. When such a final state is established, multiple tasks have to be prioritized and launched altogether simultaneously, and the system is given an extremely short time window to generate its output. This huge gap between the wait and action times, perceived as a load unbalancing problem, hinders a control decision to be made in real time. To address this challenging problem, in this paper, we …

Dynamic Allocation/Reallocation Of Dark Cores In Many-Core Systems For Improved System Performance, Xingxing Huang, Xiaohang Wang, Yingtao Jiang, Amit Kumar Singh, Mei Yang
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
A significant number of processing cores in any many-core systems nowadays and likely in the future have to be switched off or forced to be idle to become dark cores, in light of ever increasing power density and chip temperature. Although these dark cores cannot make direct contributions to the chip's throughput, they can still be allocated to applications currently running in the system for the sole purpose of heat dissipation enabled by the temperature gradient between the active and dark cores. However, allocating dark cores to applications tends to add extra waiting time to applications yet to be launched, …
