Delineating Genetic Influences On Neurodegenerative Disorders And Infectious Diseases Through Advanced Computational Methods, Xiaowei Zhuang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Genetics plays a critical role in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders and pathogen evolution in infectious diseases. For example, identifying genetic variants associated with a disease phenotype uncovers functional pathways that could lead to potential drug targets and therapeutic interventions. In addition, tracking the genetic evolution of pathogens enables early detection and warning of infectious disease outbreaks. In both applications, given the large amount of genetic data, advanced computational methods, including longitudinal and multivariate models, could significantly boost the statistical power and capture interrelationships among traits, environmental factors and genetic influences. This dissertation focuses on four applications of …

Image Processing Techniques For Water Droplet Penetration Time And Contact Angle Estimation, Sai Balaji Jai Kumar
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Water droplet behavior on soil surfaces plays a critical role in numerous environmental processes, including soil erosion, hydrological dynamics, and ecosystem health. Accurate characterization of soil water repellency, quantified by parameters such as water droplet penetration time (WDPT) and contact angles (WDCA), is essential for informed decision-making in agricultural management, forestry practices, and land-use planning. Despite the significance of these parameters, challenges exist in reliably estimating them due to the complex and dynamic nature of soil-water interactions. This thesis address challenges in estimating WDPT and WDCA, by leveraging state-of-the-art image processing techniques and machine learning algorithms. The research focuses on …

Additionally, they have the potential to play a pivotal role in enhancing grid resilience by providing grid services. This study investigates the management of customer electricity bills and grid services through the integration of various BTM-DERs, particularly solar …
Automated Measurement Of The Water Drop Penetration Time For The Analysis Of Soil Water Repellency, Danxu Wang
Automated Measurement Of The Water Drop Penetration Time For The Analysis Of Soil Water Repellency, Danxu Wang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In this work, we develop an innovative system for the automated measurement of Water Drop Penetration Time (WDPT) - a parameter that is conventionally used for evaluating soil water repellency (SWR). Increased SWR can be a reason for plant stress and poor crop yields, create a risk of potential water runoff and floods and thus can pose risks to life and property loss. Timely evaluation of soil conditions can save resources and win time for responding to environmental disasters. Manual measurements of WDPT are labor-intensive, subjective, tend to produce variability of outcomes, and also not always available in remote or …

Characterizing The Molecular And Cellular Changes Of Senescent Cells Induced By Diverse Stressors In 2d And 3d Microenvironments, Apoorva Chauhan
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Aging is a risk factor for myriad diseases and is often associated with the accumulation of senescent cells. Cellular senescence, a process of irreversible cell cycle arrest, is associated with various changes in cellular morphology and function. While senescence will occur naturally in a time-dependent manner, it can be prematurely induced by various extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Most senescence studies model cell behavior in two-dimensional (2D) microenvironments; however, these models are not physiologically relevant. In this study, the effects of naturally occurring reactive oxygen species (ROS) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and commonly used chemotherapy drugs, doxorubicin and palbociclib, on cellular senescence …

Digitally Predicting Protein Localization And Manipulating Protein Activity In Fluorescence Images Using 4d Reslicing Gan, Yang Jiao, Lingkun Gu, Yingtao Jiang, Mo Weng, Mei Yang
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
While multi-channel fluorescence microscopy is a vital imaging method in biological studies, the number of channels that can be imaged simultaneously is limited by technical and hardware limitations such as emission spectra cross-talk. One solution is using deep neural networks to model the localization relationship between two proteins so that the localization of one protein can be digitally predicted. Furthermore, the input and predicted localization implicitly reflect the modeled relationship. Accordingly, observing the response of the prediction via manipulating input localization could provide an informative way to analyze the modeled relationships between the input and the predicted proteins.

We present a method to fabricate handcrafted thermoelectric devices on standard office paper substrates. The devices are based on thin films of WS2, Te, and BP (P-type semiconductors) and TiS3 and TiS2 (N-type semiconductors), deposited by simply rubbing powder of these materials against paper. The thermoelectric properties of these semiconducting films revealed maximum Seebeck coefficients of (+1.32 ± 0.27) mV K−1 and (−0.82 ± 0.15) mV K−1 for WS2 and TiS3, respectively. Additionally, Peltier elements were fabricated by interconnecting the P- and N-type films with graphite electrodes. A thermopower value up to 6.11 mV K−1 was obtained when the Peltier …

Modeling And Analysis Of Subcellular Protein Localization In Hyper-Dimensional Fluorescent Microscopy Images Using Deep Learning Methods, Yang Jiao
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Hyper-dimensional images are informative and become increasingly common in biomedical research. However, the machine learning methods of studying and processing the hyper-dimensional images are underdeveloped. Most of the methods only model the mapping functions between input and output by focusing on the spatial relationship, whereas neglect the temporal and causal relationships. In many cases, the spatial, temporal, and causal relationships are correlated and become a relationship complex. Therefore, only modeling the spatial relationship may result in inaccurate mapping function modeling and lead to undesired output. Despite the importance, there are multiple challenges on modeling the relationship complex, including the model …
Development Of Uav-Based Rail Track Geometry Irregularity Monitoring And Measuring Platform Empowered By Artificial Intelligence, Lihao Qiu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Rail tracks need to be consistently monitored and inspected for problems associated with rust, deformation, and cracks that, at their worst, can cause catastrophic train derailments. Many non-destructive testing approaches have been explored and extensively utilized to help inspect rails’ health, but most of them require intensive human power and/or heavy sensor systems (e.g. total stations, manual/car-mounted trolly, etc.) that are not efficient or convenient to cover a long range of rails and may interfere with the normal operation of trains. In light of the rapid development of unmanned aerial systems/vehicles (UAS’s/UAVs) and high definition photographic and optical distance measuring sensors, …
Effects Of Distributed Energy Resources On The Bulk Electric System, Stryder Loveday
Effects Of Distributed Energy Resources On The Bulk Electric System, Stryder Loveday
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The traditional power grid was designed with a centralized resource distribution in mind, with a relatively small number of large power generation facilities supplying the vast majority of load. With recent efforts to further diversify the power grid as well as an increased interest in renewable energy sources, there has been an unprecedented amount of new DistributedEnergy Resources (DERs) added to the grid within the last decade. This often heavily influences the local demand where these resources are installed, often causing power to flow in ways not anticipated by the original design of the grid. This thesis reviews the potential …

A Wearable Electronic Monitoring Device For Low Pressure Garment Applications And Temperature Analysis For Prevention Of Ulceration And Infection, Francisco Mata Carlos
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The healing process of several medical conditions related to venous insufficiency and burn scar management can be improved by the proper application of pressure. Current practices for applying pressure to an extremity do not guarantee the consensus ideal interface pressures for such medical conditions. Applying a low pressure range (within 15 – 40 mm Hg) is challenging due to many factors, but especially because the actual pressure applied by a compression garment used on a patient is unknown. The proposed device, used to sense and display low pressure values, is described in detail throughout the chapters of this thesis. An electronic …

Efficient Networks-On-Chip Communication Support Solutions For Deep Neural Network Acceleration, Binayak Tiwari
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The increasing popularity of deep neural network (DNN) applications demands high computing power and efficient hardware accelerator architectures. DNN accelerators use a large number of processing elements (PEs) and on-chip memory for storing weights and other parameters. A significant challenge is faced when designing a many-core DNN accelerator to handle the data movement between the processing elements. As the communication backbone of a DNN accelerator, networks-on-chip (NoC) plays an important role in supporting various dataflow patterns and enabling processing with communication parallelism in a DNN accelerator. However, the widely used mesh-based NoC architectures inherently cannot efficiently support many-to-one (gather) and …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research
The inelastic background of hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data is analyzed to paint a depth-resolved picture of the CdS/Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CdS/CIGSe) layer structure. The CdS/CIGSe interface is the central component in next-generation chalcopyrite thin-film photovoltaic devices. By analyzing both, the (unscattered) core-level peaks and the inelastic background, and by varying the excitation photon energy from 2.1 up to 14 keV, we can derive photoemission information over a broad range of electron kinetic energies and, hence, sampling depths. With this complementary information, the CdS film thickness of a CdS/CIGSe interface can be accurately determined as a function of the CdS deposition time. …

Second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy ubiquitously enables the investigation of surface chemistry, interfacial chemistry, as well as symmetry properties in solids. Polarization-resolved SHG spectroscopy in the visible to infrared regime is regularly used to investigate electronic and magnetic order through their angular anisotropies within the crystal structure. However, the increasing complexity of novel materials and emerging phenomena hampers the interpretation of experiments solely based on the investigation of hybridized valence states. Here, polarization-resolved SHG in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV-SHG) is demonstrated for the first time, enabling element-resolved angular anisotropy investigations. In noncentrosymmetric LiNbO3, elemental contributions by lithium and niobium are …

The ability to tailor a material's electronic properties using density driven disordering has emerged as a powerful route to materials design. The observation of anomalous structural and electronic behavior in the rutile to CaCl2 phase transition in SnO2 led to the prediction that such behavior is inherent to all oxides experiencing such a phase transition sequence [Smith et al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 10, 5351 (2019)1948-718510.1021/acs.jpclett.9b01633]. Here, the ultrawide band gap semiconductor GeO2 is confirmed to exhibit anomalous behavior during the rutile to CaCl2 phase transition. A phase pure rutile GeO2 sample synthesized under high-pressure, high-temperature conditions is probed using …
