Modeling, Fabrication, And Optimization Of Niobium Cavities, Robert A. Schill Jr., Mohamed Trabia, William Culbreth
Modeling, Fabrication, And Optimization Of Niobium Cavities, Robert A. Schill Jr., Mohamed Trabia, William Culbreth
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
One of the key technologies for the deployment of accelerator driven transmutation systems is the accelerator itself. Elliptical superconducting niobium cavities are used to increase the efficiency of the high-power accelerators needed to support the transmutation mission.
One of the major sources of energy loss from a superconducting accelerator cavity is a process known as multiple impacting (or “multipacting”) of electrons. This phenomenon limits the maximum amount of energy and power that the niobium cavity can store. As a result, the maximum power available for accelerating the desired charge, as well as the overall performance of the accelerator is reduced. …

Modeling, Fabrication, And Optimization Of Niobium Cavities Phase Iii: Quarterly Report, Robert A. Schill Jr., Mohamed Trabia
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
This quarterly report provides an update to the last phase of the Modeling, Fabrication, and Optimization of Niobium Cavities. Designing the experimental setup of secondary electron emission was well underway in early summer of 2003 when funding was made available for this portion the study. By March 2004, many of the components of the experimental study reached UNLV with some assembly accomplished. The first secondary electron emission (SEE) measurement was made from the surface of a Faraday cup in September 2004. At a particular beam energy, the current measured with the Faraday cup and electrometer changed sign over a range …

A Fast And Simple Algorithm For Computing M Shortest Paths In Stage Graph, M. Sherwood, Laxmi P. Gewali, Henry Selvaraj, Venkatesan Muthukumar
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
We consider the problem of computing m shortest paths between a source node s and a target node t in a stage graph. Polynomial time algorithms known to solve this problem use complicated data structures. This paper proposes a very simple algorithm for computing all m shortest paths in a stage graph efficiently. The proposed algorithm does not use any complicated data structure and can be implemented in a straightforward way by using only array data structure. This problem appears as a sub-problem for planning risk reduced multiple k-legged trajectories for aerial vehicles.

Investigation Of Nanoporous Thin-Film Alumina Templates, Biswajit Das
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
This paper presents the results of a systematic study of the fabrication of thin-film alumina templates on silicon and other substrates. Such templates are of significant interest for the low-cost implementation of semiconductor and metal nanostructure arrays. In addition, thin-film alumina templates on silicon have the potential for nanostructure integration with silicon electronics. Formation of thin-film alumina templates on silicon substrates was investigated under different fabrication conditions, and the dependence of pore morphology and pore formation rate on process parameters was evaluated. In addition, process conditions for improved pore size distribution and periodicity were determined. The template/silicon interface, important for …

Quantization With Knowledge Base Applied To Geometrical Nesting Problem, Grzegorz Chmaj, Leszek Koszalka
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
Nesting algorithms deal with placing two-dimensional shapes on the given canvas. In this paper a binary way of solving the nesting problem is proposed. Geometric shapes are quantized into binary form, which is used to operate on them. After finishing nesting they are converted back into original geometrical form. Investigations showed, that there is a big influence of quantization accuracy for the nesting effect. However, greater accuracy results with longer time of computation. The proposed knowledge base system is able to strongly reduce the computational time.

Remote Monitoring Of Repository Integrity Using Passive Seismic Arrays, Barbara Luke, Evangelos Yfantis
Publications (YM)
Once radioactive waste is emplaced in the repository, the challenge of monitoring the continued integrity of the excavated openings (e.g., emplacement drifts) escalates tremendously. We envision a seismic monitoring array installed on the surface at Yucca Mountain, which operates automatically to monitor repository opening stability in the long term. The objective is to monitor and validate the structural integrity of the emplacement drifts through identifying and localizing rock falls that could compromise drift access, hinder waste retrievability, and potentially reduce the effective life of waste canisters. Collateral benefits of the system include the ability to address some outstanding uncertainties regarding …

Comparing Self-Efficacy And Metacognition As Indicators Of Performance, Deborah K. Smith, Jerry Cha-Jan Chang, Trevor T. Moores
Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Research
We report the results of a pilot study that compared the computer self-efficacy construct with metacognition. While self-efficacy is primarily affective and refers to one’s beliefs about one’s ability to perform a task, metacognition is primarily cognitive and refers to one’s thoughts about one’s ability to perform a task. Given their similarity, both have been used as surrogate measures of knowledge or skill. We developed an instrument to measure both constructs and applied the instrument to a set of MIS students taking an Analysis and Design course. Factor analysis produced a five-factor model, with metacognition factoring out as a unidimensional …

Formation Of Porous Silicon Through The Nanosized Pores Of An Anodized Alumina Template, Biswajit Das, S. P. Mcginnis
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
This letter demonstrates the ability to fabricate porous silicon through the nanoscale pores of an anodized alumina template formed on a silicon substrate. The alumina template acts as a protective coating on the porous silicon surface increasing its mechanical integrity, thus eliminating the need for delicate handling that is usually required for this material system. The optical properties of the porous silicon formed through the template show characteristics similar to that of normally formed porous silicon. In addition, the porous siliconoptical properties show very little degradation with time; the alumina coating is believed to contribute to this improved stability. The …

Multipacting is one of the major loss mechanisms in rf superconductivity cavities for accelerators. This loss mechanism limits the maximum amount of energy/power supported by the cavities. Optimal designs have been identified in others’ studies. In practice, these designs are not easily manufactured. Chemical etching processes used to polish the cavity walls result in a nonuniform surface etch. A nonuniform surface etch will leave some unclean areas with contaminants and micron size particles. These significantly affect mutipacting. Further, a nonuniform etch will leave areas with damaged grain structure, which is not good for superconducting properties. Typically, the depth of chemical …
A Simplistic Plasma Dust Removal Model Employing Radiation Pressure, Robert A. Schill Jr.
A Simplistic Plasma Dust Removal Model Employing Radiation Pressure, Robert A. Schill Jr.
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
A simple heuristic model is developed to examine the feasibility of using radiation pressure as a means to transport plasma dust out of the path of the forthcoming electron or photon beam. A slow electromagnetic surface wave coupled to a planar target or substrate exerts the required pressure in the removal process. The model is examined using data and parameters from single-shot radiography experiments. Optimal source requirements are identified for a typical radiography experiment. Source energies and powers are a minimum over an optimum band of frequencies where both conduction and plasma oscillation effects are mutually significant. Above the band …

The article presents methods of dealing with huge data in the domain of neural networks. The decomposition of neural networks is introduced and its efficiency is proved by the authors’ experiments. The examinations of the effectiveness of argument reduction in the above filed, are presented. Authors indicate, that decomposition is capable of reducing the size and the complexity of the learned data, and thus it makes the learning process faster or, while dealing with large data, possible. According to the authors experiments, in some cases, argument reduction, makes the learning process harder.

All technologies for the transmutation of nuclear waste require a large source of neutrons. One of the principal methods of generating these neutrons is by using a particle accelerator to bombard a heavy metal target. One of the more promising designs for particle accelerators for transmutation systems is the Superconducting Radio Frequency (RF) high-current linear accelerator (linac). The power supplies for these systems have three major components: niobium cavities, power couplers, and cryomodules. This research project will develop models to predict the behavior and performance of the niobium cavities, which will then be used to design and optimize the superconducting …
