An interdigitated back-contact vertical-junction solar cell which utilizes an anisotropically etched 110-oriented silicon crystal wafer. The cell structure includes rounded corner top edges of the between cell channel walls in order to improve light capturing ability and also has pn-junctions disposed over all of the cavity internal surfaces. Additional pn-junctions are located on the rear surface of the cell array to assist in generated carrier collection into a rear mounted metallic conductor grid. The disclosed cell has desirable transducer efficiency, without the use of anti-reflection coatings, and previous improved physical robustness, and radiation hardening. Induction generators are particularly suitable for small hydro applications and are widely used at present. However, with conventional grid-connected techniques, it is not always possible to use them in regions with weak grids because of excessive connection transients. Consequently, their many advantages cannot be fully exploited in these regions. Standardised control systems have been developed by ECS for isolated applications of induction generators and these will now be further developed to permit reduced-transient grid connections.

The goal of this thesis is to develop an artificial neural approach toward addressing the intractability involved with the decomposition problem. The search for the lattice of substitution property (s. p.) partitions essential to decompositions is cast into the framework of constraint satisfaction. An artificial neural network is developed to provide solutions by performing optimization of a mathematically derived objective function over the problem space. The issue of transitivity is verified to belong to a class of problems beyond the scope of solvability for conventional quadratic-order constraint satisfaction neural networks. After examining and analyzing the experience with coke ovens, the authors conclude that attempts to force technology beyond its demonstrated competence can be both expensive and ineffective in controlling hazards. They also suggest implications for pending proposals to further control air pollution.

The combination of a switched capacitor network and switching power supply techniques can result in a transformer less regulated DC power supply that is small, relatively simple, and efficient. In addition, the output of such a system could be operated over a wide range of common mode voltages. Multiple switched capacitor supplies could be stacked to achieve voltage multiplication.
Although the output of a system of this type is a continuous function, the internal operation must be analyzed in finite time elements. This numerical analysis will be shown in both a mathematical approach and a computer model.

The authors present the optimal transient stability control problem in a hierarchical structure for multimachine power systems. The two-level structure retains the local closed-loop controls, thereby easing its implementation on existing systems. The formulation accounts for nonlinearities and interconnections, and the optimization of the system transient performance is obtained with less computational effort. Since the computations are distributed among the many local feedback subsystems, the storage and solution times are considerably less than those required by a single overall centralized controller. This advantage becomes much stronger as the system size increases. For illustration purposes, this technique was applied successfully to …

In low pressure discharges, operated in electronegative gas mixtures to the right of the Paschen curve minimum, the discharge resistance can be increased by application of transverse magnetic fields. In this range of operation, both the mean free path and the larmor radius are small compared to the discharge dimensions. The relationship between the electric field and the magnetic field is therefore controlled by electron- molecule collisional processes. Specifically, the magnetically induced increase in the discharge resistance is caused by a downward shift of the electron energy distribution which leads to an increase in attachment and a reduction in ionization. …

A new dynamic programming algorithm for fast rescheduling thermal generation is presented. The savings in computational times are brought about by the introduction of two new techniques: the variable truncation dynamic programming and the limitation of the solution space to be searched. Several examples on a 20 machine system are used to illustrate the application of the algorithm and to show that optimal solutions are obtained at significantly reduced computational times.

A Frequency Domain Digital Signal Processor For Laser Velocimeter Systems, Andreas Evangelos Savvakis

A new signal processor for laser velocimeter systems is proposed. The proposed processor incorporates automatic initialization, real time operation, and can efficiently process input signals comprised of as low as 150 photons, with mean oscillation frequency up to 100 MHZ, and input turbulence from 0 to 20%. A bank of digital bandpass filters is employed for the energy spectrum estimation of the input signal. A deterministic model is developed to describe the relationship between the filter output energies and the input signal parameters. This experimental investigation addresses the anomalous overvoltage breakdown and subsequent recovery characteristics observed in gas-blown spark gaps. Previous investigations have reported a two-stage recovery process in self-break, pulse-charged, gas-blown spark gape in which the spark gap recovers first to an intermediate breakdown strength before recovering to the undisturbed breakdown voltage. The recovery process has been explained in terms of two different characteristic times. The first is that required to obtain initial recovery in which the spark gap regains its intrinsic breakdown strength. The second time is that required to obtain final recovery in which the pulse-charged spark gap regains the …

A new approach to the solution of the optimal thermal generation scheduling problem is presented. The problem is solved in two steps. As a first step, the optimal production schedule for the next day is obtained based on a daily load forecast, reserve capacity requirements, and present status of generating units. The second-step algorithm uses the results of the first step and adjusts the previous schedule to meet new constraints developed during the course of the day. A pump and probe technique was used to investigate triplet-triplet excited state absorption in solutions of the scintillators 2,5 diphenyloxazole (PPO) and 2,1 naphthyl,5 phenylzole (a-NPO) in several solvents.
KrF excimer radiation (248 nm) was used to pump the samples under investigation as well as a tunable dye laser which was used as the probe. Time-resolution was obtained by changing the optical path difference between the pump and probe beams.
Transient excited state absorption was measured in a wide spectral region between 330 nm and 600 nm, showing a peak at 400 nm for PPO solutions, and two …

A load flow and contingency analysis program for secure design, planning and operation of power systems. Depending on the application either Newton-Raphson or Fast-Decoupled method is employed to solve the load flow. Fault analysis is done by Z bus method. Contingency analysis may be done following the load flow solution by Fast-Decoupled method. The program is also interfaced with a graphic system which displays a single line diagram of the system on the graphic screen along with relevant data and informs the operator of any change by flashing the faulted bus or the line outage.

High-pressure spark gap switches are often used in pulsed power systems because of their high power capabilities. Unfortunately, these switches cannot be operated at high repetition rates because of the time required for the switch to recover. However, the recovery rate of a spark gap may be improved by flowing a gas through the interelectrode region so as to remove the hot gases and debris.
