The feasibility of using a dense plasma focus (DPF) as a current interrupting device has been investigated. Specifically, a 34-kJ, Mather-type DPF was modified to accept a third electrode so that a discharge could be created between this electrode and the center electrode of the DPF by a 10-kJ inductive energy storage circuit. It was anticipated that the accelerating mechanisms of the DPF pinch, which are known to cause a rapid reduction in the DPF current, would interrupt the 1-kA to 10-kA secondary discharge current thus forcing the secondary current through an external load and hence result in power amplification. …

Historically, practical applications of solar cells were of single crystal silicon material (Rauschenbach, 1980). In the mid 1970s, the U.S. Government actively began to subsidize solar cell development and use (Maycock & Stirewalt, 1981). This funding provided a major contribution for expanded research, development, and markets. Consequently, manufacturing and final-product costs have been reduced with a corresponding increase in solar cell efficiency (Merrigan, 1982). The main objective of this study was to analyze literature from photovoltaic cell manufacturers regarding their current production methods, materials, and uses, and to report the findings.

There is a need to develop alternative sources of energy other than our finite fossil fuel resources (Clews, 1975; Leckie, Masters, Whitehouse and Young, 1975). One possible area of great potential is the clean renewable energy in the wind. The World Meteorological Organization has estimated that there is a potential for producing 20 million megawatts of electricity from wind power (Clews, 1975). Although there are problems with cost, reliability, and its inherently intermittent nature, both government and industry are working to develop a wind technology that will help meet today's electrical energy needs.

During the past decade important progress has been made in understanding the sun-earth environmental system. Modern observations of solar activity document changes in solar output over time scales ranging from seconds to decades, and evidence for longer term variations have been found in historical records. It follows that the sun cannot be considered to be a totally non-variable energy source. Continued research progress into solar-terrestrial interactions will hopefully provide an understanding of sun-weather/climate relationships resulting in energy conservation through more efficient energy utilization of our planet's atmospheric energy system.

Efficiencies on the order of 50 percent with high differential temperature (150° C) have been advertised with the current distribution of commercially available evacuated tube collectors. Product specifications and, where possible, experimental data have been gathered and presented. The paper also develops a mathematical model for evaluation of these collectors. Results conclude that, although performance is high, collector expense limits the cost effectiveness to necessary high-temperature, high-volume applications. These include both residential cooling and industrial processing.

This study examines the economic feasibility of residential solar heating. Climatic and economic variables used in this report represent those of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. An annual cost model is used to determine the conditions under which solar heating achieves a reduced annual cost of heating relative to gas and electric heating systems.
