My bachelor thesis focuses on implementing a Hardware in the Loop (HIL) simulation for a quadcopter controlled by an Android smartphone. The HIL simulation will be able to test the software running on an Android smartphone by simulating a virtual quadcopter on the computer without the need to use an actual quadcopter. However, making these visualizations with multiple datasets can be challenging due to the lack of standardization within file formats and the software needed to render the visualizations.

The goal is to determine if low-cost UV LEDs can mitigate marine biofouling on small glass or acrylic camera lenses. A microprocessor-controlled experimental setup to control the illumination of low-cost UV LEDs of various wavelength and packaging was fashioned. The system consists of a programmed microcontroller, a manufactured LED breakout interface, and a submergible UV LED array enclosed in a borosilicate glass tube. This projects intention is to get Chromium OS running on a Freescale i.MX6q processor, a processor based on the ARM® Cortex™-A9 architecture. The development board I used is the Ventana GW5400 by Gateworks. This project inherently meant using Chromium OS's development system which meant I created a board specific package for the Ventana single board computer. This project is a bike computer system built for Cal Poly’s Human Powered Vehicle Team. It was designed and built using Arduino and Android programming tools. The project consists of an Arduino Uno used to collect bike data (such as speed, temperature and GPS location) and an Android Application used to display this data in real time and save it to user profiles within the application. Although many bike computers already exist, this project was specifically designed to be used in a team racing environment rather than for individual use.

For this project a secure, battery operated, Bluetooth operated padlock was created. The project included both the hardware to integrate with a padlock and an Android application used to interface with the hardware. In order to make the padlock secure both AES encryption and challenge response authentication were used for secure message passing between the device and the Android phone. The project also included power consumption and sustainability tuning including exploring Arduino sleep states and integrating the project with a solar charging unit.

This project is an initial investigation into the use of wearable electronics for wireless gesture detection, with the end goal of an application of augmenting dance performance through the use of gesture controlled sound. Though the system developed is not as yet of practical use to a dance performer, it lays the groundwork for future development and expansion, in both hardware and software design. In particular, it provides an in-depth overview of the lessons learned regarding the special hardware development considerations in wearable electronics to help ensure the success of future developments.
