In this issue we have three papers that have made the cut. The first paper titled “The Cost of Privacy: Riley v. California’s Impact on Cell Phone Searches” is timely. In 2014 there was a unanimous decision that requires a warrant for all cell phone searches. This has some strong implications on the forensic analysis of mobile phones, and to that end, this article discusses and summarizes this legal precedent with its practical implications.

Toward A Framework For Levels Of Robot Autonomy In Human-Robot Interaction, Jenay Beer, A. D. Fisk, W. A. Rogers
Toward A Framework For Levels Of Robot Autonomy In Human-Robot Interaction, Jenay Beer, A. D. Fisk, W. A. Rogers
Faculty Publications
Autonomy is a critical construct related to human-robot interaction (HRI) and varies widely across robot platforms. Levels of robot autonomy (LORA), ranging from teleoperation to fully autonomous systems, influence the way in which humans and robots interact with one another. Thus, there is a need to understand HRI by identifying variables that influence—and are influenced by—robot autonomy. Our overarching goal is to develop a framework for LORA in HRI. To reach this goal, our framework draws links between HRI and human-automation interaction, a field with a long history of studying and understanding human-related variables. The construct of autonomy is reviewed …

In a Flash Mob (FM) a group of people get together in the physical world perform an unpredicted act and disperse quickly. Cyber Flash Mob (CFM) is the cyber manifestation of flash mob coordinated primarily using social media. Deviant Cyber Flash Mob (or, DCFM) is a special case of CFM, which is categorized as the new face of transnational crime organizations (TCOs). The DCFM phenomenon can be considered as a form of a cyber-collective action that is defined as an action aiming to improve group’s conditions (such as, status or power). In this paper, we conduct a conceptual analysis of …
Secure And Reliable Wireless Communication Through End-To-End-Based Solution, Hossen Asiful Mustafa
Secure And Reliable Wireless Communication Through End-To-End-Based Solution, Hossen Asiful Mustafa
Theses and Dissertations
In the past few decades, network architectures and protocols are often designed to achieve a high throughput and a low latency. Security was rarely considered during the initial design phases. As a result, many network systems are insecure by design. Once they are widely deployed, the inherent vulnerabilities may be difficult to eliminate due to the prohibitive update cost. In this dissertation, we examine such types of vulnerabilities in various networks and design end-to-end-based solutions that allow end systems to address such loopholes.
The end-to-end argument was originally proposed to let end hosts implement application-specific functions rather than letting intermediate …

Software-Based Instrumentation For Analysis Of Electrostatic Discharge Effects, Antonio James Sabatini
Software-Based Instrumentation For Analysis Of Electrostatic Discharge Effects, Antonio James Sabatini
Masters Theses
”Failures caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD) compromise the reliability of embedded systems. Peripherals such as the universal serial bus (USB) are particularly vulnerable, as isolating them to avoid electromagnetic interference would defy their purpose - facilitating communication with and/or by the embedded system. Better understanding the propagation of failures that result from ESD can facilitate defensive development of hardware and software for embedded systems, but is hampered by the lack of non-invasive and lightweight instrumentation techniques.
The original contribution of this thesis is the design and development of software-based instrumentation for monitoring the reaction of the USB peripheral of an …
Quantitative Modeling Of Reliability And Survivability For Cyber-Physical Power Systems, Murtadha Nabeel Albasrawi
Quantitative Modeling Of Reliability And Survivability For Cyber-Physical Power Systems, Murtadha Nabeel Albasrawi
Masters Theses
"Critical infrastructure systems are increasingly reliant on cyber infrastructure that enables intelligent real-time control of physical components. This cyber infrastructure utilizes environmental and operational data to provide decision support intended to increase the efficacy and reliability of the system and facilitate mitigation of failure. Realistic imperfections, such as corrupt sensor data, software errors, or failed communication links can cause failure in a functional physical infrastructure, defying the purpose of intelligent control. As such, justifiable reliance on cyber-physical critical infrastructure is contingent on rigorous investigation of the effect of intelligent control, including modeling and simulation of failure propagation within the cyber-physical …

"Green" On-Chip Inductors In Three-Dimensional Integrated Circuits, Umamaheswara Rao Tida
"Green" On-Chip Inductors In Three-Dimensional Integrated Circuits, Umamaheswara Rao Tida
Masters Theses
"This thesis focuses on the technique for the improvement of quality factor and inductance of the TSV inductors and then on the utilization of TSV inductors in various on-chip applications such as DC-DC converter and resonant clocking. Through-silicon-vias (TSVs) are the enabling technique for three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs). However, their large area significantly reduces the benefits that can be obtained by 3D ICs. On the other hand, a major limiting factor for the implementation of many on-chip circuits such as DC-DC converters and resonant clocking is the large area overhead induced by spiral inductors. Several works have been proposed …

"Noise analysis has been an important and difficult part of design flow of very large-scale integrated (VLSI) systems in many years. In this thesis, the problem of signal alignment resulting in possible maximum peak interconnect coupling noise and propose a variation aware technique for computing combined noise pulse taking into account timing constraints on signal transitions has been discussed. This work shows that the worst noise alignment algorithm can be formulated as mixed integer programming (MLIP) problem both in deterministic window cases and variational window cases. For deterministic window cases, it is assumed that timing windows are given for each …

Scalable Approximation Of Kernel Fuzzy C-Means, Zijian Zhang
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Virtually every sector of business and industry that uses computing, including financial analysis, search engines, and electronic commerce, incorporate Big Data analysis into their business model. Sophisticated clustering algorithms are popular for deducing the nature of data by assigning labels to unlabeled data. We address two main challenges in Big Data. First, by definition, the volume of Big Data is too large to be loaded into a computer’s memory (this volume changes based on the computer used or available, but there is always a data set that is too large for any computer). Second, in real-time applications, the velocity of …
Detection And Control Of Small Civilian Uavs, Matthew Peacock
Detection And Control Of Small Civilian Uavs, Matthew Peacock
Theses : Honours
With the increasing proliferation of small civilian Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), the threat to critical infrastructure (CI) security and privacy is now widely recognised and must be addressed. These devices are easily available at a low cost, with their usage largely unrestricted allowing users to have no accountability. Further, current implementations of UAVs have little to no security measures applied to their control interfaces. To combat the threat raised by small UAVs, being aware of their presence is required, a task that can be challenging and often requires customised hardware.
This thesis aimed to address the threats posed by the …

Robomirror: A Simulated Mirror Display With A Robotic Camera, Yuqi Zhang
Robomirror: A Simulated Mirror Display With A Robotic Camera, Yuqi Zhang
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Simulated mirror displays have a promising prospect in applications, due to its capability for virtual visualization. In most existing mirror displays, cameras are placed on top of the displays and unable to capture the person in front of the display at the highest possible resolution. The lack of a direct frontal capture of the subject's face and the geometric error introduced by image warping techniques make realistic mirror image rendering a challenging problem. The objective of this thesis is to explore the use of a robotic camera in tracking the face of the subject in front of the display to …
Improving C2 Effectiveness Based On Robust Connectivity, S. Deller, A. Tolk, G. Rabadi, S. Bowling
Improving C2 Effectiveness Based On Robust Connectivity, S. Deller, A. Tolk, G. Rabadi, S. Bowling
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications
This chapter describes an approach to develop an improved metric for network effectiveness through the use of Cares' (2005) Information Age Combat Model (IACM) as a context for combat (or competition) between networked forces. The IACM highlights the inadequacy of commonly used quantifiable metrics with regards to comparing networks that differ only by the placement of a few links. An agent-based simulation is used to investigate the potential value of the Perron-Frobenius Eigenvalue (λPFE) as an indicator of network effectiveness. The results validate this assumption. Another measurement is proven to be equally important, namely the robustness of a …

Distance In Matrices And Their Applications To Fuzzy Models And Neutrosophic Models, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
In this book authors for the first time introduce the notion of distance between any two m n matrices. If the distance is 0 or m n there is nothing interesting. When the distance happens to be a value t; 0 < t < m n the study is both innovating and interesting. The three cases of study which is carried out in this book are 1. If the difference between two square matrices is large, will it imply the eigen values and eigen vectors of those matrices are distinct? Several open conjectures in this direction are given. 2. The difference between parity check matrix and the generator matrix for the same C(n, k) code is studied. This will help in detecting errors in storage systems as well as in cryptography.
Synthetic Generators For Simulating Social Networks, Awrad Mohammed Ali
Synthetic Generators For Simulating Social Networks, Awrad Mohammed Ali
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An application area of increasing importance is creating agent-based simulations to model human societies. One component of developing these simulations is the ability to generate realistic human social networks. Online social networking websites, such as Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, have increased in popularity in the last decade. Despite the increase in online social networking tools and the importance of studying human behavior in these networks, collecting data directly from these networks is not always feasible due to privacy concerns. Previous work in this area has primarily been limited to 1) network generators that aim to duplicate a small subset of …

Diversity Order And Coding Gain Of General-Order Rectangular Qam In Mimo Relay With Tas/Mrc In Nakagami-M Fading, Won Mee Jang
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Recently, multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) relay networks have been an active area of research, particularly with combining single transmit antenna selection (TAS) and receiver maximal ratio combining (MRC). Moreover, generalorder rectangular quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) has received much attention for its high spectral efficiency and flexible modulation scheme. However, the analytical performance of general-order rectangular QAM has not been found in the literature forMIMO relay with TAS/MRC in Nakagami-mfading channels in spite of its practical usefulness. In addition, the analytical performance of general-order rectangular QAM often comes with enormous computational complexity. Therefore, it is hardly possible to understand the analytical solution unless …

An Intelligent System For High Resolution Radar Systems, Janette C. Briones
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Cognitive radio is a recent, novel approach that integrates machine perception software into wireless systems. The term cognitive radio was first used by Joe Mitola. The concept and the term cognitive radio quickly caught the attention and interest of many in the communications field. Cognitive radios are capable of making decisions and selecting or modifying the operating parameters of a radio. Given these capabilities, it is feasible to build a cognitive radar system as introduced by Simon Haykin in 2006. Cognitive radar, as described by Haykin, is an intelligent system that must be aware of its environment, uses prior knowledge, …

Multi-Objective Border Patrolling Optimization Using Game Theory And Evolutionary Algorithms, Franciso Oswaldo Aguirre
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Border security has evolved significantly since the days when no more than 75 Mounted Guards patrolled the U.S. border in the early 1900's. The border region includes thousands of miles of both land and maritime borders that must be controlled, as well as commercial transportation networks. One of the primary components of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency. One of the most typical activities performed by CBP is patrolling the expansive open areas in between official points of entry (POEs) to prohibit illegal entry attempts. Roving patrols are routinely conducted by …
