Numerical Investigation Of Impact Of Relative Humidity On Droplet Accumulation And Film Cooling, Luz Irene Bugarin Jan 2014

Numerical Investigation Of Impact Of Relative Humidity On Droplet Accumulation And Film Cooling, Luz Irene Bugarin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

During the summer, high inlet temperatures affect the power output of gas turbine systems. Evaporative coolers have gained popularity as an inlet cooling method for these systems. Wet compression has been one of the common evaporative cooling methods implemented to increase power output of gas turbine systems due to its simple installation and low cost. This process involves injection of water droplets into the continuous phase of compressor to reduce the temperature of the flow entering the compressor and in turn increase the power output of the whole gas turbine system. This study focused on a single stage rotor-stator compressor …

Frequency Selective Surfaces For Extreme Applications, Jay Houston Barton Jan 2014

Frequency Selective Surfaces For Extreme Applications, Jay Houston Barton

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

It is known that for high-power microwaves and other extreme environments, the use of resonant metallic elements in frequency selective surfaces can be problematic. The solution developed within this Dissertation to solve these problems was to use guided-mode resonance phenomenon to create all-dielectric frequency selective surfaces that could survive these extreme environments.

To fully understand how these devices work, three different computational electromagnetic methods are formulated and implemented. The formulation of these methods start with the differential form of Maxwellâ??s equation and are derived all the way down to the final simulation state. This is done sequentially and all the …

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

In recent years, the nature of engineering design has changed due to advances in embedded system design and computer technologies. It is rare to engineer a purely mechanical design that does not incorporate electrical and electronic components. Mechanical engineers and mechanical engineering technologists must possess a multi-disciplinary knowledge with the understanding of both mechanical and electrical systems. For this purpose, undergraduate programs in engineering technology have added mechatronics courses to their curriculum. Mechatronics is a design process that is multi-disciplinary in nature and integrates principles of many engineering disciplines including, but not limited to, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and controls …

Hands-On Homework Or Laboratory Development For Distance Learning Students In Programmable Logical Controller (Plc), Cheng Y. Lin, Yuzhong Shen, Mileta Tomovic

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

When teaching PLC classes in the distance-education (DE) program, one of the main problems is to provide hands-on experience to students. This is because students can only use design software to complete their homework and lab problems without being able to touch PLCs or wire ladder logic diagrams. In this paper, the authors develop a virtual laboratory to help DE students gain hands-on wiring experience in the automation control classes. The development significantly shortens the gap on the issue of hands-on experience between on-campus students and DE students. To increase the performance of safety and effectiveness, on-campus students can also …

Password Protected Visual Cryptography Via Cellular Automaton Rule 30, Roman V. Yampolskiy, Jovan D. Rebolledo-Mendez, Musa M. Hindi

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Visual cryptography depends on two shares. The initial configuration, extra security bits and the number of the rule for the CA along with the number of computed steps serve as a password for a visually encrypted image. The second share could contain a predefined pattern; the developed algorithm uses a snapshot of a CA after a certain number of steps to generate the predefined share. Only one of these shares has to be random. The developed encryption system is a hybrid between visual and classical cryptographic approaches. It requires less storage space compared to a standalone visual encryption system and …

Analysis Of A Dual Scissored-Pair,Variable-Speed, Control Moment Gyroscope Driven Spherical Robot, Richard Chase

Wayne State University Dissertations

The objective of this research is to compare barycenter offset based designs of spherical robots to control moment gyroscope (CMG) based designs in order to determine which approach is most effective. The first objective was to develop a list of current state of the art designs in order to gain an overall understanding of what the obstacles in this area of research were. The investigation showed that barycenter offset designs can produce a low, continuous output torque, whereas CMG based designs can usually only produce a high, momentary output torque. The second objective was to develop a CMG based design …

Wayne State University Dissertations

Highway platooning of vehicles has been identified as a promising framework in

developing intelligent transportation systems. By autonomous or semi-autonomous

vehicle control and inter-vehicle coordination, an appropriately managed platoon can

potentially offer enhanced safety, improved highway utility, increased fuel economy,

and reduced emission. This thesis is focused on quantitative characterization of impact

of communication information structures and contents on platoon safety. By

comparing different information structures which combine front sensors, rear sensors,

and wireless communication channels, and different information contents such

as distances, speeds, and drivers' actions, we reveal a number of intrinsic relationships

between vehicle coordination and communications in …

Building A Scalable And High-Performance Key-Value Store System, Yuehai Xu

Wayne State University Dissertations

Contemporary web sites can store and process very large amounts of data. To provide timely service to their users, they have adopted key-value (KV) stores, which is a simple but effective caching infrastructure atop the conventional databases that store these data, to boost performance. Examples are Facebook, Twitter and Amazon. As yet little is known about the realistic workloads outside of the companies that operate them, this dissertation work provides a detailed workload study on Facebook's Memcached, which is one of the world's largest KV deployment. We analyze the Memcached workload from the perspective of server-side performance, request composition, caching …

Robustness And Prediction Accuracy Of Machine Learning For Objective Visual Quality Assessment, Andrew Hines, Paul Kendrick, Adriaan Barri, Manish Narwaria, Judith A. Redi

Conference papers

Machine Learning (ML) is a powerful tool to support the development of objective visual quality assessment metrics, serving as a substitute model for the perceptual mechanisms acting in visual quality appreciation. Nevertheless, the reliability of ML-based techniques within objective quality assessment metrics is often questioned. In this study, the robustness of ML in supporting objective quality assessment is investigated, specifically when the feature set adopted for prediction is suboptimal. A Principal Component Regression based algorithm and a Feed Forward Neural Network are compared when pooling the Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) features perturbed with noise. The neural network adapts better with …

Perceived Audio Quality For Streaming Stereo Music, Andrew Hines, Eoin Gillen, Naomi Harte, Damien Kelly, Jan Skoglund, Anil Kokaram

Conference papers

Users of audio-visual streaming services expect an ever increasing quality of experience. Channel bandwidth remains a bottleneck commonly addressed with lossy compression schemes for both the video and audio streams. Anecdotal evidence suggests a strongly perceived link between bit rate and quality. This paper presents three audio quality listening experiments using the ITU MUSHRA methodology to assess a number of audio codecs typically used by streaming services. They were assessed for a range of bit rates using three presentation modes: consumer and studio qual- ity headphones and loudspeakers. Our results indicate that with consumer quality headphones, listeners were not differentiating …

A User-Oriented Network Forensic Analyser: The Design Of A High-Level Protocol Analyser, D Joy, F Li, N L. Clarke, S M. Furnell

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

Network forensics is becoming an increasingly important tool in the investigation of cyber and computer-assisted crimes. Unfortunately, whilst much effort has been undertaken in developing computer forensic file system analysers (e.g. Encase and FTK), such focus has not been given to Network Forensic Analysis Tools (NFATs). The single biggest barrier to effective NFATs is the handling of large volumes of low-level traffic and being able to exact and interpret forensic artefacts and their context – for example, being able extract and render application-level objects (such as emails, web pages and documents) from the low-level TCP/IP traffic but also understand how …

In the field of surveillance, algorithms are developed to extract meaningful information out of a video feed captured via a camera. One type of algorithm used in the field of surveillance is a tracking algorithm. A tracking algorithm allows a user to watch the movement of an object in the camera's field of view. The tracker used in this thesis research is a feature aided tracker (FAT). The FAT uses both features and kinematics to generate tracks. However, camera movement will affect the tracker's ability to accurately track an object which poses a problem to the tracker. Specifically, the camera …

Combating Integrity Attacks In Industrial Control Systems, Chad Arnold

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Industrial Control Systems are vulnerable to integrity attacks because of connectivity to the external Internet and trusted internal networking components that can become compromised. Integrity attacks can be modeled, analyzed, and sometimes remedied by exploiting properties of physical devices and reasoning about the trust worthiness of ICS communication components.

Industrial control systems (ICS) monitor and control the processes of public utility that society depends on - the electric power grid, oil and gas pipelines, transportation, and water facilities. Attacks that impact the operations of these critical assets could have devastating consequences. The complexity and desire to interconnect ICS components have …

To construct a complete representation of a scene with environmental obstacles such as fog, smoke, darkness, or textural homogeneity, multisensor video streams captured in diferent modalities are considered. A computational method for automatically fusing multimodal image streams into a highly informative and unified stream is proposed. The method consists of the following steps: 1. Image registration is performed to align video frames in the visible band over time, adapting to the nonplanarity of the scene by automatically subdividing the image domain into regions approximating planar patches

2. Wavelet coefficients are computed for each of the input frames in each modality …

Adapting Linguistic Deception Cues For Malware Detection, Stacie Noel Severyn Jan 2014

Adapting Linguistic Deception Cues For Malware Detection, Stacie Noel Severyn

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

People verbally express themselves in a variety of ways, yet the same patterns consistently appear within the words of a person who is being deceptive. This research provides insight and demonstrates that similar patterns exist within malicious software that do not commonly exist within benign software, and can be used to help determine that the software is malicious or untrustworthy.

The patterns that have been shown to exist within deceptive language were investigated to determine whether similar patterns exist within malware. Tests were performed to determine whether malware is more likely to consistently contain a higher or lower frequency of …

The Properties Of Property Alignment On The Semantic Web, Michelle Andreen Cheatham Jan 2014

The Properties Of Property Alignment On The Semantic Web, Michelle Andreen Cheatham

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Ontology alignment is an important step in enabling computers to query and reason across the many linked datasets on the semantic web. This is a difficult challenge because the ontologies underlying different linked datasets can vary in terms of subject area coverage, level of abstraction, ontology modeling philosophy, and even language. The alignment approach presented here centers on string similarity metrics. Nearly all ontology alignment systems use a string similarity metric in one form or another, but it seems that the choice of a particular metric is often arbitrary. We begin this dissertation with the most comprehensive survey to date …

Dynamic Cache Partitioning For Multi-Core Systems, Yang Zhang Jan 2014

Dynamic Cache Partitioning For Multi-Core Systems, Yang Zhang

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

As the power consumption (power wall) is limiting the clock frequency increase, multi-core and many-core processors become the major-trend of the new generation of processors. One of the biggest challenges to achieve high performance in multi-core systems is the growing disparity between processor and memory speeds. The "memory wall"' problem, i.e., the growing disparity of speed between the processor and the memory, becomes even more serious in the multi-core systems. Caches have been highly successful in bridging the processor-memory performance gap by providing fast access to frequently used data. Caches also save power by limiting expensive off-chip memory accesses. In …

Yeast Pheromone Pathway Modeling Using Petri Nets, Stephen D. Scott, Abhishek Majumdar, Jitender S. Deogun, Steven D. Harris

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Background: Our environment is composed of biological components of varying magnitude. The relationships between the different biological elements can be represented as a biological network. The process of mating in S. cerevisiae is initiated by secretion of pheromone by one of the cells. Our interest lies in one particular question: how does a cell dynamically adapt the pathway to continue mating under severe environmental changes or under mutation (which might result in the loss of functionality of some proteins known to participate in the pheromone pathway). Our work attempts to answer this question. To achieve this, we first propose a …

Real-time availability of electricity prices via a smart power grid has a potential bilateral benefit to electricity users and suppliers. The users can reduce their costs by consuming energy during low-price hours and balancing their energy usage during other hours. This in turn benefits energy utility companies by reducing their peak power demand. This article describes an optimal shrinking horizon model for electricity-consuming units based on user preferences. The proposed model optimizes the end user’s electricity cost while meeting preferred comfort levels. The user can set preferences in the model using a tristate flexibility parameter for each electric-power-consuming unit. The …
