Wlan Csma/Ca Performance In A Bluetooth Interference Environment, Randall B. Noel Mar 2003

Wlan Csma/Ca Performance In A Bluetooth Interference Environment, Randall B. Noel

Theses and Dissertations

IEEE 802.11 WLANs and Bluetooth piconets both operate in the 2.4 GHz Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) radio band. When operating in close proximity, these two technologies interfere with each other. Current literature suggests that IEEE 802.11 (employing direct sequence spread spectrum technology) is more susceptible to this interference than Bluetooth, which uses frequency hopping spread spectrum technology, resulting in reduced throughput. Current research tends to focus on the issue of packet collisions, and not the fact that IEEE 802.11 may also delay its transmissions while the radio channel is occupied by a Bluetooth signal. This research characterizes previously neglected …

Characterizing Data Streams Over Ieee 802.11b Ad-Hoc Wireless Networks, John T. Wagnon Mar 2003

Characterizing Data Streams Over Ieee 802.11b Ad-Hoc Wireless Networks, John T. Wagnon

Theses and Dissertations

Soon, advancements in data encryption technology will make real-time decryption of the contents of network packets virtually impossible. This research anticipates this development and extracts useful information based on packet level characteristics. Distinguishing characteristics from e-mail, HTTP, print, and FTP applications are identified and analyzed. The analysis of collected data from an ad-hoc wireless network reveals that distinguishing characteristics of network traffic do indeed exist. These characteristics include packet size, packet frequency, inter-packet correlation, and channel utilization. Without knowing the contents of packets or the direction of the traffic flow, the applications accessing the wireless network can be determined.

Congruent Weak Conformance, Ronald W. Brower Sep 2002

Congruent Weak Conformance, Ronald W. Brower

Theses and Dissertations

This research addresses the problem of verifying implementations against specifications through an innovative logic approach. Congruent weak conformance, a formal relationship between agents and specifications, has been developed and proven to be a congruent partial order. This property arises from a set of relations called weak conformations. The largest, called weak conformance, is analogous to Milner's observational equivalence. Weak conformance is not an equivalence, however, but rather an ordering relation among processes. Weak conformance allows behaviors in the implementation that are unreachable in the specification. Furthermore, it exploits output concurrencies and allows interleaving of extraneous output actions in the implementation. …

Multicast Routing Algorithms And Failure Analyses For Low Earth Orbit Satellite Communication Networks, Jae Soong Lee Aug 2002

Multicast Routing Algorithms And Failure Analyses For Low Earth Orbit Satellite Communication Networks, Jae Soong Lee

Theses and Dissertations

In the rapidly changing environment of mobile communications, the importance of the mobile satellite (e,g,, low earth orbit satellites (LEOsats)) networks will increase due to their global visibility and connection. Multicasting is an effective communication method in terms of frequency spectrum usage for a LEO network. It is devised to provide lower network traffic (i,e,, one-to-many transmissions). This research examines the system performance of two dissimilar terrestrially-based multicasting protocols: the Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol (DVMRP) and the On Demand Multicast Routing Protocol (ODMRP). These two protocols are simulated in large group membership density and in the presence of satellite …

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research is to analyze the utility of UWB for indoor geolocation and to evaluate a prototype system, which will send information detailing a person’s position and physiological status to a command center. In a real world environment, geolocation and physiological status information needs to be sent to a command and control center that may be located several miles away from the operational environment. This research analyzes and characterizes the UWB signal in the various operational environments associated with indoor geolocation. Additionally, "typical usage scenarios" for the interaction between UWB and other devices are also tested and …

Integrated Manet Mutual Authentication System, Jason T. Ballah Mar 2002

Integrated Manet Mutual Authentication System, Jason T. Ballah

Theses and Dissertations

The Integrated MANET Mutual Authentication System (IMMAS) provides implied mutual authentication of all routing and data traffic within a Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) by combining Elliptic Curve Cryptography, a public-key cryptosystem, with the Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) Protocol. IMMAS provides security by effectively hiding network topology from adversaries while reducing the potential for, among other things, traffic analysis and data tampering, all while providing a graceful degradation for each of the authentication components. Current research in MANETs tends to focus primarily on routing issues leaving topics such as security and authentication for future research. IMMAS focuses on achieving a …

Performance Analysis Of A Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation Algorithm In A Circuit-Switched Communications Network, Timothy M. Schwamb Mar 2002

Performance Analysis Of A Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation Algorithm In A Circuit-Switched Communications Network, Timothy M. Schwamb

Theses and Dissertations

Military communications networks typically employ a gateway multiplexer to aggregate all communications traffic onto a single link. These multiplexers typically use a static bandwidth allocation method via time-division multiplexing (TDM). Inefficiencies occur when a high-bandwidth circuit, e.g., a video teleconferencing circuit, is relatively inactive rendering a considerable portion of the aggregate bandwidth wasted while inactive. Dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) reclaims unused bandwidth from circuits with low utilization and reallocates it to circuits with higher utilization without adversely affecting queuing delay. The proposed DBA algorithm developed here measures instantaneous utilization by counting frames arriving during the transmission time of a single …

Fabrication Techniques For Micro-Optical Device Arrays, Ryan D. Conk Mar 2002

Fabrication Techniques For Micro-Optical Device Arrays, Ryan D. Conk

Theses and Dissertations

Micro-optical devices are vital components of conventional military data storage, sensor, and communication systems. Two types of micro-optical device arrays exist: individually addressable and matrix addressable. The matrix addressable array has a drastically reduced number of metal lines and can potentially be fabricated into large, dense (over 1k elements) arrays. Such arrays are expected to enable the development of extremely high bandwidth optical interconnect systems for future military applications including optical computing and short-haul fiber optical communication systems. I investigate new fabrication techniques for the assembly of dense matrix-addressed arrays of micro-optical devices such as vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers. Using a …

A Direct Sequence Code-Division Multiple-Access Local Area Network Model, James R. Rapallo Jr. Mar 2002

A Direct Sequence Code-Division Multiple-Access Local Area Network Model, James R. Rapallo Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Air Force relies heavily on computer networks for every-day operations. The medium access control (MAC) protocol currently used by most local area (LAN) permits a single station to access the network at a time (e.g. CSMA/CD or Ethernet). This limits network throughput to, at most, the maximum transmission rate of a single node with overhead neglected. Significant delays are observed when a LAN is overloaded by multiple users attempting to access the common medium. In CSMA/CD, collisions are detected and the data sent by the nodes involved are delayed and transmitted at a later time. The retransmission …

In addition, the WDCS response to two scenarios simulating Doppler effects and physical separation of transceivers are obtained. The fundamental metric for analysis and performance evaluation is bit error rate (Pb). Relative to …

Information Domain Modeling Of Emergent Phenomena, Ron Fulbright Jan 2002

Information Domain Modeling Of Emergent Phenomena, Ron Fulbright

Theses and Dissertations

Study in fields such as distributed artificial intelligence (DAI), decentralized artificial intelligence (DzAI), parallel artificial intelligence (PAl), multiagent systems (MAS), computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), artificial life (AL), and complex adaptive systems (CAS) is concerned with the cooperation, coordination, communication, and coherence of multiple agents working together to achieve a common goal. The notion that the ability of a collective can exceed the sum of the individuals is a fundamental concept and a generally accepted truth. However, no general theoretical explanation exists as to why this could or should be the case. This dissertation explores such an explanation by considering …

Wavelet Domain Communication System (Wdcs): Design, Model, Simulation, And Analysis, Randall W. Klein Mar 2001

Wavelet Domain Communication System (Wdcs): Design, Model, Simulation, And Analysis, Randall W. Klein

Theses and Dissertations

A proposed wavelet domain communication system (WDCS) using transform domain processing is demonstrated as having enhanced interference avoidance capability under adverse environmental conditions. The WDCS system samples the environment and uses the wavelet transform, to determine interference presence and time/scale location. A digital communication waveform (basis function) is subsequently designed in the wavelet domain to specifically avoid regions containing interference. The WDCS basis function is data modulated prior to transmission. Assuming perfect synchronization, the receiver replicates a locally generated basis function for correlating with the received signal and demodulating the data. The proposed system is modeled and simulation results are …

These protocols are implemented and simulated in a six plane, 66 satellite LEO constellation. …

Using Direct-Sequenced Spread Spectrum In A Wired Local Area Network, Robert J. Bonner Mar 2001

Using Direct-Sequenced Spread Spectrum In A Wired Local Area Network, Robert J. Bonner

Theses and Dissertations

Code division multiple access provides an ability to share channel bandwidth amongst users at the same time. Individual user performance is not degraded with the addition of more users, unlike traditional Ethernet. Using direct sequenced spread spectrum in a wired local area network, network performance is improved. For a network in overload conditions, individual station throughput is increased by nearly 212% while mean end-to-end delay was reduced by 800%. The vast improvement demonstrated by this research has the capability to extend legacy-cabling infrastructures for many years to come while easily accommodating new bandwidth intensive multimedia applications.

Turbo Codes For Wireless Mobile Communication Systems Applications, Moataz M. Salah Jun 2000

Turbo Codes For Wireless Mobile Communication Systems Applications, Moataz M. Salah

Theses and Dissertations

Research in coding theory has seen many proposals aimed at the construction of powerful codes using block and convolutional codes. Recently, a new forward error control code, known as turbo code, was introduced. This new code yields very good performance (near the Shannon limit) with relatively simple component codes and large interleavers in combination with an iterative decoding process. Among the most important applications of turbo codes are wireless mobile communication systems. A significant performance metric for this application is the minimization of end-to-end delay. In this dissertation, different ways to enhance the performance of turbo codes with short frames …

Information protection and information assurance are vital components required for achieving superiority in the Infosphere, but these goals are threatened by the exponential birth rate of new computer viruses. The increased global interconnectivity that is empowering advanced information systems is also increasing the spread of malicious code and current anti-virus solutions are quickly becoming overwhelmed by the burden of capturing and classifying new viral stains. To overcome this problem, a distributed computer virus immune system (CVIS) based …

Mission Route Planning With Multiple Aircraft & Targets Using Parallel A* Algorithm, Ergin Sezer Mar 2000

Mission Route Planning With Multiple Aircraft & Targets Using Parallel A* Algorithm, Ergin Sezer

Theses and Dissertations

The general Mission Route Planning (MRP) Problem is the process of selecting an aircraft flight path in order to fly from a starting point through defended terrain to target(s), and return to a safe destination. MRP is a three-dimensional, multi-criteria path search. Planning of aircraft routes involves an elaborate search through numerous possibilities, which can severely task the resources of the system being used to compute the routes. Operational systems can take up to a day to arrive at a solution due to the combinatorial nature of the problem, which is not acceptable, because time is critical in aviation. Also, …

Timed Safety Automata And Logic Conformance, Frank C. D. Young Jun 1999

Timed Safety Automata And Logic Conformance, Frank C. D. Young

Theses and Dissertations

Timed Logic Conformance (TLC) is used to verify the behavioral and timing properties of detailed digital circuits against abstract circuit specifications when both are modeled as Timed Safety Automata (TSA) with real-valued clocks. TLC is a bisimulation-style partial order relationship defined over TSA state space. In contrast to timed simulation, Calculus of Timed Refinement, and time-abstracted bisimulation, TLC defines when one system is an acceptable implementation of another by asymmetric action-matching requirements for specification inputs and implementation outputs. TLC intuitively and pragmatically supports writing abstract specifications and verifying them against implementations. TLC scales up by substituting verified specifications for implementations …

Performance Analysis Of Tcp Enhancements In Satellite Data Networks, Ren H. Broyles Mar 1999

Performance Analysis Of Tcp Enhancements In Satellite Data Networks, Ren H. Broyles

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines two proposed enhancements to the well-known Transport Control Protocol (TCP) in the presence of noisy communication links. The Multiple Pipes protocol is an application-level adaptation of the standard TCP protocol, where several TCP links cooperate to transfer data. The Space Communication Protocol Standard - Transport Protocol (SCPS-TP) modifies TCP to optimize performance in a satellite environment. While SCPS-TP has inherent advantages that allow it to deliver data more rapidly than Multiple Pipes, the protocol, when optimized for operation in a high-error environment, is not compatible with legacy TCP systems, and requires changes to the TCP specification. This …

Asymmetric Load Balancing On A Heterogeneous Cluster Of Pcs, Christopher A. Bohn Mar 1999

Asymmetric Load Balancing On A Heterogeneous Cluster Of Pcs, Christopher A. Bohn

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, high performance computing with commodity clusters of personal computers has become an active area of research. Many organizations build them because they need the computational speedup provided by parallel processing but cannot afford to purchase a supercomputer. With commercial supercomputers and homogenous clusters of PCs, applications that can be statically load balanced are done so by assigning equal tasks to each processor. With heterogeneous clusters, the system designers have the option of quickly adding newer hardware that is more powerful than the existing hardware. When this is done, the assignment of equal tasks to each processor results …

Te Scattering From Bubbles In Ram, John G. Cochran Mar 1999

Te Scattering From Bubbles In Ram, John G. Cochran

Theses and Dissertations

This research looks at various bubble sizes in one particular magnetic RAM (MAURAM) type, from grazing incidence (00) to 450 and at a frequency range from 2-18 GHz, TE polarization. The results from the absolute RCS measurement of the various sized RAM bubbles are discussed in terms of a frequency dependent increase in RCS. In the frequency band of interest, 2-18GHz, a RAM bubble increases the RCS at all angles, from grazing incidence (00) to 450. From 10-18GHz the RAM bubble does not cause an increase in RCS. In general the highest RCS is at 2GHz and tapers down as …

A Comparative Analysis Of Networks Of Workstations And Massively Parallel Processors For Signal Processing, David C. Gindhart Dec 1997

A Comparative Analysis Of Networks Of Workstations And Massively Parallel Processors For Signal Processing, David C. Gindhart

Theses and Dissertations

The traditional approach to parallel processing has been to use Massively Parallel Processors (MPPs). An alternative design is commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) workstations connected to high-speed networks. These networks of workstations (NOWs) typically have faster processors, heterogeneous environments, and most importantly, offer a lower per node cost. This thesis compares the performance of MPPs and NOWs for the two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (2-D FFT). Three original, high-performance, portable 2-D FFTs have been implemented: the vector-radix, row-column and pipeline. The performance of these algorithms was measured on the Intel Paragon, IBM SP2 and the AFIT NOW, which consists of 6 Sun Ultra workstations …
