Big Five Technologies In Aeronautical Engineering Education: Scoping Review, Ruth Martinez-Lopez
Big Five Technologies In Aeronautical Engineering Education: Scoping Review, Ruth Martinez-Lopez
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
The constant demands that technology creates in aerospace engineering also influence education. The identification of the technologies with practical application in aerospace engineering is of current interest to decision makers in both universities and industry. A social network approach enhances this scoping review of the research literature to identify the main topics using the Big Five technologies in aerospace engineering education. The conceptual structure of the dataset (n=447) was analyzed from different approaches: at macro-level, a comparative of the digital technology identified by cluster analysis with the number of co-words established in 3 and 8 and, a keyword central structure …

Audio To Architecture: House Music As A Form Generator, Polina Timchenko
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
Contemporary music undergoes similar process of creation to that of the design process through computation and variation. House music as a representation of contemporary culture has a layered structure that allows specific characteristics to identify it as house music. Song components can vary and mix in different orders that form new dynamic compositions. I am going to explore the idea that every house music component can be translated into geometry with the use of parametric design techniques.

Computer Engineering
With the increased accessibility to powerful GPUs, ability to develop machine learning algorithms has increased significantly. Coupled with open source deep learning frameworks, average users are now able to experiment with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to solve novel problems. This project sought to train a CNN capable of classifying between various locations within a building. A single continuous video was taken while standing at each desired location so that every class in the neural network was represented by a single video. Each location was given a number to be used for classification and the video was subsequently titled locX. These …

A Scalable, Chunk-Based Slicer For Cooperative 3d Printing, Jace J. Mcpherson
A Scalable, Chunk-Based Slicer For Cooperative 3d Printing, Jace J. Mcpherson
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cooperative 3D printing is an emerging technology that aims to increase the 3D printing speed and to overcome the size limit of the printable object by having multiple mobile 3D printers (printhead-carrying mobile robots) work together on a single print job on a factory floor. It differs from traditional layer-by-layer 3D printing due to requiring multiple mobile printers to work simultaneously without interfering with each other. Therefore, a new approach for slicing a digital model and generating commands for the mobile printers is needed, which has not been discussed in literature before. We propose a chunk-by-chunk based slicer that divides …
Collaborative Robotic Path Planning For Industrial Spraying Operations On Complex Geometries, Steven Brown
Collaborative Robotic Path Planning For Industrial Spraying Operations On Complex Geometries, Steven Brown
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Implementation of automated robotic solutions for complex tasks currently faces a few major hurdles. For instance, lack of effective sensing and task variability – especially in high-mix/low-volume processes – creates too much uncertainty to reliably hard-code a robotic work cell. Current collaborative frameworks generally focus on integrating the sensing required for a physically collaborative implementation. While this paradigm has proven effective for mitigating uncertainty by mixing human cognitive function and fine motor skills with robotic strength and repeatability, there are many instances where physical interaction is impractical but human reasoning and task knowledge is still needed. The proposed framework consists …

“New” Subjects In Mechatronics Management Education, Peter Kopacek
International Journal of Business and Technology
Process – and manufacturing automation as well as robotics are currently one of the fast growing fields in automation. Advanced process control, cyber-physical systems, industry 4.0 and “advanced robots” are no longer a headline. They are in realization. As a consequence of these developments new social, ethical and human questions appear.
Therefore this contribution is a first report about the continuous “modernization” of the Mechatronics Management BSc and MSc programs which are successful running at UBT. Both programs were developed in the framework of two TEMPUS projects from an international consortium from 2006 to 2009. Since that time new “buzzwords” …

Optimal Control Of Dc Motors Using Pso Algorithm For Tuning Pid Controller, Arnisa Myrtellari, Petrika Marango, Margarita Gjonaj
International Journal of Business and Technology
The DC motors are widely used in the mechanisms that require control of speed. Different speed can be obtained by changing the field voltage and the armature voltage. The classic PID controllers are widely used in industrial process for speed control. But they aren’t suitable for high performance cases, because of the low robustness of PID controller. So many researchers have been studying various new control techniques in order to improve the system performance and tuning PID controllers. This paper presents particle swarm optimization (PSO) method for determining the optimal PID controller parameters to find the optimal parameters of DC …

With Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers being widely used in industry for optimum solutions. Optimization of the PID controller is an important problem in Control Engineering. Therefore, in this paper work we have implemented Simulated Annealing to tune the controller parameters. Optimizing the controller parameters on the basis of the Simulated Annealing algorithm, based on criteria defined using an objective function, allows us to find optimal solutions for the controller parameters that give us minimum error. In terms of performance, the PID controller designed with Simulated Annealing gives us great results with regard to the rise time, settling time, overshoot and steady-state …
Reinforcement Learning In Robotic Task Domains With Deictic Descriptor Representation, Harry Paul Moore
Reinforcement Learning In Robotic Task Domains With Deictic Descriptor Representation, Harry Paul Moore
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In the field of reinforcement learning, robot task learning in a specific environment with a Markov decision process backdrop has seen much success. But, extending these results to learning a task for an environment domain has not been as fruitful, even for advanced methodologies such as relational reinforcement learning. In our research into robot learning in environment domains, we utilize a form of deictic representation for the robot’s description of the task environment. However, the non-Markovian nature of the deictic representation leads to perceptual aliasing and conflicting actions, invalidating standard reinforcement learning algorithms. To circumvent this difficulty, several past research …

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Situational awareness and indoor positioning of firefighters are types of information of paramount importance to the success of search and rescue operations. GPS units are undependable for use in Indoor Positioning Systems due to their associated mar- gins of error in position and their reliance on satellite communication that can be interrupted inside large structures. There are few other techniques like dead reck- oning, Wifi and bluetooth based triangulation, Structure from Motion (SFM) based scene reconstruction for Indoor positioning system. However due to high temper- atures, the rapidly changing environment of fires, and low parallax in the thermal images, the …

Modern marine biologists seeking to study or interact with deep-sea organisms are confronted with few options beyond industrial robotic arms, claws, and suction samplers. This limits biological interactions to a subset of “rugged” and mostly immotile fauna. As the deep sea is one of the most biologically diverse and least studied ecosystems on the planet, there is much room for innovation in facilitating delicate interactions with a multitude of organisms. The biodiversity and physiology of shallow marine systems, such as coral reefs, are common study targets due to the easier nature of access; SCUBA diving allows for in situ delicate …

Exploring The Effect Of Different Numbers Of Convolutional Filters And Training Loops On The Performance Of Alphazero, Jared Prince
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this work, the algorithm used by AlphaZero is adapted for dots and boxes, a two-player game. This algorithm is explored using different numbers of convolutional filters and training loops, in order to better understand the effect these parameters have on the learning of the player. Different board sizes are also tested to compare these parameters in relation to game complexity. AlphaZero originated as a Go player using an algorithm which combines Monte Carlo tree search and convolutional neural networks. This novel approach, integrating a reinforcement learning method previously applied to Go (MCTS) with a supervised learning method (neural networks) …

Human remote-control (RC) pilots have the ability to perceive the position and orientation of an aircraft using only third-person-perspective visual sensing. While novice pilots often struggle when learning to control RC aircraft, they can sense the orientation of the aircraft with relative ease. In this paper, we hypothesize and demonstrate that deep learning methods can be used to mimic the human ability to perceive the orientation of an aircraft from monocular imagery.
This work uses a neural network to directly sense the aircraft attitude. The network is combined with more conventional image processing methods for visual tracking of the aircraft. …

Enhancing 3d Visual Odometry With Single-Camera Stereo Omnidirectional Systems, Carlos A. Jaramillo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We explore low-cost solutions for efficiently improving the 3D pose estimation problem of a single camera moving in an unfamiliar environment. The visual odometry (VO) task -- as it is called when using computer vision to estimate egomotion -- is of particular interest to mobile robots as well as humans with visual impairments. The payload capacity of small robots like micro-aerial vehicles (drones) requires the use of portable perception equipment, which is constrained by size, weight, energy consumption, and processing power. Using a single camera as the passive sensor for the VO task satisfies these requirements, and it motivates the …

Micro-Manipulation Using Learned Model, Matthew A. Lyng, Benjamin V. Johnson, David J. Cappelleri
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Microscale devices can be found in applications ranging from sensors to structural components. The dominance of surface forces at the microscale hinders the assembly processes through nonlinear interactions that are difficult to model for automation, limiting designs of microsystems to primarily monolithic structures. Methods for modeling surface forces must be presented for viable manufacturing of devices consisting of multiple microparts. This paper proposes the implementation of supervised machine learning models to aid in automated micromanipulation tasks for advanced manufacturing applications. The developed models use sets of training data to implicitly model surface interactions and predict end-effector placement and paths that …

Elongate fishes have evolved hundreds of times throughout the tree of life. They occupy many aquatic environments, from streams and ponds to the deepest parts of the ocean. Due to their long body and numerous vertebrae, they are also highly flexible animals, which makes them useful as bioinspiration for designs in the field of soft robotics. We present a biodegradable soft robot prototype, inspired by elongate fishes. The robot's body is primarily composed of a silk hydrogel with embedded fibers to mimic the structure of natural fish skin. When actuated at the front, the flexible gel prototype mimics the undulatory …

Search Methods For Mobile Manipulator Performance Measurement, Samuel Nana Yaw Amoako-Frimpong
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Mobile manipulators are a potential solution to the increasing need for additional flexibility and mobility in industrial robotics applications. However, they tend to lack the accuracy and precision achieved by fixed manipulators, especially in scenarios where both the manipulator and the autonomous vehicle move simultaneously. This thesis analyzes the problem of dynamically evaluating the positioning error of mobile manipulators. In particular, it investigates the use of Bayesian methods to predict the position of the end-effector in the presence of uncertainty propagated from the mobile platform. Simulations and real-world experiments are carried out to test the proposed method against a deterministic …

Biomimetic Design And Construction Of A Bipedal Walking Robot, Alexander Gabriel Steele
Dissertations and Theses
Human balance and locomotion control is highly complex and not well understood. To understand how the nervous system controls balance and locomotion works, we test how the body responds to controlled perturbations, the results are analyzed, and control models are developed. However, to recreate this system of control there is a need for a robot with human-like kinematics. Unfortunately, such a robotic testbed does not exist despite the numerous applications such a design would have in mobile robotics, healthcare, and prosthetics.
This thesis presents a robotic testbed model of human lower legs. By using MRI and CT scans, I designed …
Robust Pose Estimation Of A Robotic Navigation Aid For The Visually Impaired By Multimodal Data Fusion, He Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
For a visually impaired individual, it is a challenging task for him/her to plan and follow a path towards the destination. This task is referred to as wayfinding. In this paper, the functions of wayfinding are defined as localization (aka pose estimation) in an indoor environment and finding a way to get to the destination by using the location information. To address this issue, vision-based navigation systems that use a camera for pose estimation have been intensively studied. Several vision-based robotic navigation aids (RNAs) for the visually impaired have been developed. However, these RNAs are not reliable enough to assist …

The purpose of our project is to allow players to hit baseballs on a baseball field and not have to worry about picking them up. By combining our knowledge of software and hardware, we developed the first design of a robot that “shags” baseballs. Our endeavor was only partially successful. The device was tested on grass, turf, and concrete. The motors did not have enough torque to get moving on grass. The device faired better on turf where it could move, but was quite jerky as the motor drive needed to be high to start moving, but once it was …
