Middle-shallow layer goaf left after the excavation of small coal mines in expansive soil areas always brings much trouble to expressway construction, the section of K21 +400~K22 +550 of Nanning outer ring expressway under construction faces such a situation. Based on the grasp of geological condition of the goaf, related national technical specifications and existing technical research about treatment, the dynamic compaction with geogird reinforcement method is applied to settle the roadbed with a good result showed in the field testing. The City of Pocatello, Idaho does not currently treat its storm water, but rather collects runoff in detention basins or discharges it into the Portneuf River. Nitrates from fertilizers and petroleum products enter local waterways and ultimately groundwater supplies. Porous concrete is regarded as a green product and has storm water filtering capabilities. Idaho State University (ISU) has been studying the use of scoria (vesicular basalt) to retain petroleum contaminants which migrate through porous concrete collection systems placed on driving surfaces. In seismic wave measurements, soil dynamic parameters, i.e., shear wave velocity and shear modulus are determined from a dispersion curve of phase velocity with employing the theory of elasticity of soils. In this paper, a developed technique from Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves (SASW), namely as the Wavelet Spectrogram Analysis of Surface Waves (WSASW) is introduced for measurement of the soil dynamic properties at soft marine clay soils sites. At CAD $1.54B, the Nouvelle Autoroute 30 project is the largest and second Public Private Partnership (PPP) transportation project procured in the province of Québec, Canada. It will operate as a tolled two-lane 42km divided highway with 31 bridges including two major bridge crossings of the St Lawrence River and Beauharnois Canal and a short tunnel. Space technology is a new technology that provides cost-effective measurements of past displacement data. Based on these displacement measurements, within the framework of the European Space Agency’s GMES Terrafirma Project, an improved geotechnical design approach is proposed combining geotechnical modelling and space measurements to predict ground subsidence induced by the lowering of the water table. Then the proposed methodology is applied to predict future displacement at the Thessaly plain - Carla region, Greece due to excessive pumping.

Sites Bukit Antarabangsa, Selangor and at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Selangor were investigated using Multichannel Analysis of Surface Wave (MASW) method. Surface wave method is incorporated with Geographic Information System (GIS) to investigate the hazardous zone for landslides that allows online data to obtain near surface soil profiles. Low frequency seismic signals are used to get 2-D tomography profiles of surface soil near landslides. It is possible to identify landslide risks, if geological and geotechnical properties of soil are known. Field observation and monitoring earth structures is vital to design the structure safely and efficiently. Among different types of instruments, earth pressure cells (EPCs) are used to measure soil pressure in embankment dams, which are not proved to be entirely satisfactory. Presence of cells and installation methods usually affect the accuracy of total stress measurements. Since earth pressure cells are prone to damage by large and sharp stones or by using heavy compaction rollers, one excavates a trench and place EPC within fine grained soil which is compacted with light-weight machines. An existing four lane section of US 27 was widened to eight lanes. The project lies in the rugged Valley and Ridge Province of the Appalachian mountains starting at the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tennessee and extending 2.6 km north to Signal Mountain Boulevard. This terrain presented many challenges to accommodate the road widening in the narrow, rugged topography. Multiple tiered wall systems consisting of large tieback walls, post-tensioned reaction blocks, and gravity MSE walls for a total of approximately 30 retaining walls were required. The retaining walls served to stabilize the thrust faulted geology while also minimizing right-of-way acquisitions. …

Wolf Creek Dam was designed and constructed between 1932 and 1952. The approximate 1 mile long combination concrete gravity and earth fill structure is located on the Cumberland River near Jamestown, KY and stores up to six million ac-ft at the maximum flood pool storage level. In 1967-1968, seepage in the foundation of the embankment section was evidenced by sinkholes and muddy flows identified on the downstream side of the dam and Instruments identified seepage through the dam foundation. A concrete barrier wall was constructed in 1975-1979, however dam monitoring in 2004 indicated that seepage persisted through the foundation. Currently, …
