Foundation Failure Case Histories Reexamined Using Modern Geomechanics, Rodrigo Salgado, Andrei Lyamin, Jeehee Lim
Foundation Failure Case Histories Reexamined Using Modern Geomechanics, Rodrigo Salgado, Andrei Lyamin, Jeehee Lim
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Case histories have played an important role in guiding development of geotechnical engineering during a time when theory was not sophisticated enough to model even simple problems with an acceptable level of rigor. As the discipline transitions from overwhelming reliance on empiricism to a greater reliance on science, it is useful to reexamine the best known case histories as a general check on modern methods of analysis. In the engineering of foundations in clay, three case histories the collapses of the Transcona and Fargo grain elevators and the near collapse of the leaning tower of Pisa stand out. …

Observational Method For The Design Of A New Ground Improvement Concept Adapted To A Large-Scale Fast-Track Project, Serge Varaksin, Frédéric Massé
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In 2007, the King of Saudi Arabia launched a large scale development program for the construction of a complete university campus on an existing lagoon. The fast-track project was to be completed within a period of 24 months leaving no time for the usual preliminary investigation and design phase. The 5,600,000 m2 site was selected north of Jeddah and a proper soil inves-tigation could not be completed ahead of the start of construction due to difficult site access and challenging existing soft soil condition. In addition to that, because the structural design or even the master plan had not been …

Tied-Back Wall Failure, Boston, Ma, Theodore Von Rosenvinge Iv
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Excavation for Boston’s Central Artery project included one of the most interesting temporary excavation support system failures in recent history (1993). The wall moved much more than predicted at a depth of 41 feet, approximately 2/3 of the final 60 foot excavation depth. Jet grouting was used to stabilize the bottom of the excavation before proceeding to the full depth. The excavation support system provided space for a cut and cover section of Interstate I-90’s Third Harbor Tunnel approach to Logan Airport. The permanent structure is a concrete box section of the tunnel. The excavation system consisted of a tied-back …
Phytoforensics: Soil And Groundwater Sampling Without Soil Or Groundwater!, Joel G. Burken, Kendra M. Waltermire
Phytoforensics: Soil And Groundwater Sampling Without Soil Or Groundwater!, Joel G. Burken, Kendra M. Waltermire
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Plants directly interact with surrounding water, air, and soil, collecting and storing chemicals and elements from the surrounding environment. Tree coring methods have shown that groundwater contamination can be assessed without directly sampling the groundwater. In this work, two new and innovative sampling methods that place sampling devices inside the plant, i.e. “in-planta”, were developed to access this valuable data that can direct and perhaps replace traditional methods for contaminated-site investigations. Traditional site assessments may be limited due to time, site access, and expense, resulting in incomplete understanding of the contaminated plumes and inefficient remedial approaches. The new techniques presented …

Structural Damage Of A 5-Storey Building: Differential Settlement Due To Construction Of An Adjacent Building Or Because Of Construction Defects?, Ioannis Anastasopoulos
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The paper presents a case history of a 5-storey RC building in Athens (Greece), seriously damaged due to differential settlement. Built in 1968, the damaged structure is founded on spread footings, lying on very soft clayey soil. For more than 30 years, no damage had been observed. In 1999, construction of an adjacent 5-storey RC building begun, and shear cracks started appearing. Inclined at 45o, the cracks implied damage due to differential settlement. The owners of the damaged building filed a law suit, claiming that the damage was due to additional loading by the under-construction adjacent building. Measurements conducted in …

Natural Hazard Preparedness And Mitigation In India, T. N. Gupta
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Indian sub-continent is highly vulnerable to geological and hydro-meteorological hazards. Occurrences of hazard events like earthquakes, cyclones, floods, landslides have, more than often turned into disasters of varying severity with devastating impact on development process destroying human lives, property, livelihoods and social fabric. Efficient management of disasters, rather than mere response to their occurrence, has in recent decades, received an increasing attention of the national planners leading to the formulation of Disaster Management Act in 2005 by Government of India. The national policy enshrined in the Act marked a paradigm shift from the erstwhile post-disaster relief-centric approach to pro-active approach …

Improvement Of Dynamic Soil Properties Induced By Preloading Verified By A Field Test And Embankment Failure, K. Stamatopoulos, P. Petridis, P. S. Allkja, G. Vatselas, A. Small
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The results of an elaborate field preloading study on a liquefaction-susceptible site are presented. Preloading was applied by a temporary embankment 9m high. Prior and after preloading, borings with standard penetration tests, cone penetration tests and geophysical studies were performed. During the process of embankment construction and demolition, settlements, excess pore pressures and vertical and horizontal stresses were recorded versus time at different locations. A partial embankment failure occurred during the preloading process. A method predicting failure during the construction of the preload embankment based on excess pore pressure measurements is proposed and verified.

An Assessment Of Soil Collapsibility Due Dissolution Of Salts, Omar Alhattamleh
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Since the building of first dike in the Dead Sea (DS) 60 years ago, the DS harsh environment sparks new geotechnical challenges. The DS level as well as the surrounding ground water table continued to drop severely. The DS level drops 35 m from 392 mbsl in late 1950s to around 423 mbsl in 2011. Recently, the rate of descending is 1.2 m/year and is on brink to increase. The dramatically dropping of the DS level pushes fresh water brackish water divide and generates numerous sink holes in the southern part of the east coast of the DS. The thing …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This study presents the results of dynamic compaction in loose, saturated granular deposits. The dynamic compaction operations were conducted by (a) the conventional method of Falling Weight Treatment (a.k.a. Deep Dynamic Compaction - DDC) and (b) the more recent Rapid Impact Compaction (RIC) method. The results of either soil improvement method are being presented, normalized and compared side by side in regards to the resulting soil improvement characteristics as well as the degree of efficiency with varying depth and location. Last, but not least, the improved mean soil compressibility parameters are validated through an embankment surcharge test.

Dynamic Properties Of Stabilized Subgrade Clay Soil, Argaw Asha Ashango, Nihar Ranjan Patra
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Expansive soils are fine-grained soils that can undergo a significant volume change due to the variation of water content. A change in the water content of weak subgrade material under the roadway is a cause for the damage of the road pavement. During an earthquake, the soft clay will lose the small shear strength it possesses which causes cracks and movements of the road. In the present study, soil samples were collected from Banda, Uttar Pradesh, India. The study area is at risk for seismic damage due to Himalayan frontal fault earthquakes. The soils samples are highly expansive in nature …

Innovative Ground Improvement For Liquefaction Control Near Charleston, South Carolina, Brian Metcalfe, Kord Wissmann, Kenneth Zur
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Liquefaction remediation solutions often encompass high prevailing costs particularly in heterogeneous soil profiles. Common liquefaction control measures consist of deep foundations, soil mixing, and stone columns. Rammed Aggregate Pier methods have been used in the past two decades to support structures in cohesive and cohesionless soil profiles and control foundation settlements to building tolerances. These methods have recently been adapted to treat liquefiable soil profiles by improving the soil through densification, drainage, and shear stress redistribution. This paper focuses on a case history on Daniel Island, SC where a new variation of RAP methods, called the Rammed Compaction Point™ (RCP) …

A breakwater embankment was constructed as part of a settling basin for the intake of a thermal power plant in the north of Egypt. The 440-m long breakwater surrounds the intake basin which has an area of about 18000 m2. Sea water is supplied to the intake basin through 50 concrete pipes embedded in the breakwater. Subsurface soil conditions in the area indicated that the embankment would be founded on soft silty clay underlain by a layer of silty sand. Results from the settlement analysis showed that the embedded pipes could not tolerate the predicted differential settlement in …
Reducing Static Settlement Potential Using Prefabricated Wick Drains – A Case History, Judd J. King
Reducing Static Settlement Potential Using Prefabricated Wick Drains – A Case History, Judd J. King
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Soft fine-grained soils subjected to heavy loads, such as those imposed by rigid structures or fill, have a high potential to consolidate over time. Depending upon subsurface conditions, soil consolidation can take many years to occur. This consolidation results in settlement, and subsequent differential settlement of the ground surface, which can have damaging consequences to structures. To reduce the potential for damage to structures due to consolidation settlement, various solutions have been devised by geoprofessionals. Such solutions include pile foundations, rigid mat/raft foundations, chemical stabilization, and over-excavation/replacement. Another method is the use of prefabricated wick drains in combination with a …

As part of the $1.7 Billion I-15 CORE highway reconstruction project in Utah, several new or enlarged large embankments were constructed adjacent to existing buried utilities. Lightweight fill was selected as the technology to limit distress to the adjacent utilities. In order to estimate the impact from new construction to the utilities, settlement estimates for the lightweight embankment were performed using traditional settlement estimating techniques. Numerical models using FLAC3D were then performed to refined estimates. Estimates of lightweight embankment foundation settlements from this construction were obtained from the finite difference modeling. Three-dimensional numerical modeling was used in order to evaluate …

The modelling of leachate generation and transport is important for estimating the possible groundwater pollution below the sanitary landfills. The numerical solution of the mathematical models for the total solids (inorganic) and chemical oxygen demand (organic) transport is presented. The existing one dimensional leachate transport model which accounts for advection and diffusion is modified with the addition of desorption term and the simulation results are compared for different case studies from the literature. The maximum error is reduced to 28.24 % with modified inorganic model against 38.93 % with the existing model for the TS concentration when simulated with literature …
Soil Property Improvement Using Slag Binder, Gennadii Boldyrev, Ilya Idrisov
Soil Property Improvement Using Slag Binder, Gennadii Boldyrev, Ilya Idrisov
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In the majority of cases this is cement, which is used for soil improvement both for sandy soils and clays in order to increase its strength and reduce its compressibility. However this effect could be reached by using lime or in some cases slag binder for soil improvement. Comparing with cement and lime blast furnace slag used for improvement of soft clays prove more effective. Soils can be improved by means of wet soil mixing or dry soil mixing. The result is that we get a new composite material and its strength is much higher when comparing with natural soils. …

The Use Of High Strength Geosynthetics In Deep Soil Mixed Levee Foundations, Brian C. Baillie
The Use Of High Strength Geosynthetics In Deep Soil Mixed Levee Foundations, Brian C. Baillie
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The construction and design of flood protection embankment levees within coastal areas has become a focal point for infrastructure management. The levees are usually constructed over soils with very poor bearing capacity due to their proximity to flood plains. The foundation soils create issues with long-term settlement, changing the protection height and creating the need to periodically build the levee back to the design height. In order to reduce settlements and the maintenance required to preserve design height protection, a deep foundation is needed for proper long term load transfer. Deep soil mixing (DSM) has become a popular deep foundation …
