A two-dimensional analysis of the largest cross-section of earth dams may generate appropriate results provided that the dam is located in a U-shape valley. The Vanyar dam has been constructed in a narrow valley. With regard to the geometrical consideration of the valley, there is no plane strain condition throughout the long side of the dam. In this research, the results of three and two dimensional numerical analyses of the Vanyar dam are compared in terms of settlement, pore water pressure, and total vertical stress. In this paper, we investigated how to utilize the small-strain stiffness order to estimate the settlement of shallow foundation on granular soils. For this purpose, a power law equation between normalized shear modulus and shear strain was presented. Based on elasticity theory and proposed equation, a new method in term of small-strain stiffness was suggested order to estimate the immediate settlement. In order to evaluate the proposed method, a series case history was studied, that included the loading tests and seismic geophysical tests. The State of Bihar, India experienced substantial flooding in the Ganges Basin as a result of levee (embankment) non performance. As a result of the 2008 failures the Bihar Water Resources Department is examining, as a programmatic model, the US experience in establishing and conducting the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Levee Safety Program. The use of case histories in classroom mainly involves an inductive teaching approach. This paper discusses the intrinsic advantages and possible drawbacks of such an inductive approach. More specifically, the paper illustrates an example of teaching the class of “slope stability” based on such methodology. The class takes place at the University of Pisa in the second tier degree of Civil Engineering of Infrastructures. The Sardar Sarovar (Narmada) underground powerhouse is located in Deccan Basalt flows in the lower Narmada valley in Gujarat state. These flows are intruded by dolerite dykes and sill. Basalt flows and dolerite rocks are considered good tunneling media for locating underground structures. Therefore, initial designing of supports was done considering good rock mass conditions. However, during construction numerous geotechnical problems were encountered necessitating review of support system. Prior to the excavation of half a million cubic meters of dense gravelly material within the city centre of Milan, a 24 to 27m long diaphragm wall was built to provide a 17m retained height to a four-level basement. Soil liquefaction presents a significant hazard to the built environment. The seismically induced permanent displacement of earth levees, dams, and embankments resulting from liquefaction below these earth structures is not well captured in current seismic design practice. The objective of this study is to advance the capabilities of numerical methods toward the solution of problems involving limited lateral spreads. The City Creek Center urban redevelopment project in Salt Lake City, Utah involved excavations up to 65 feet deep. Shoring systems included more than 29,000 square feet of anchored diaphragm walls, 100,000 square feet of soil nail walls, and 860 linear feet of underpinning. Detailed performance monitoring alerted the project team to unacceptable performance of an anchored diaphragm wall adjacent to an occupied twenty-five-story building on shallow foundations. This knowledge allowed the team to react quickly, stabilize the excavation, investigate the situation, and develop successful remedial measures. This paper gives an example of a case study written for instructional purposes, in order to support the achievement of specific learning outcomes which include (i) identifying modes of failure and (ii) selecting appropriate soil parameter types and values. Case writing was based primarily on information from a detailed publicly available article, supplemented with additional input from one author of this article. The random presence of karst features, the variation in size, extent, and depth of karst features, and the different origin and geological characteristics of karst features make site characterization and investigation difficult. A balance between non-intrusive filed tests is useful to improve the site characterization. Non-intrusive field tests which provide multi-dimensional mapping such as Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI) or Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can provide spatial coverage instead of point data. The diversion barrage comprises of gated spillway and sluiceway, head regulator, surface desanders and a collection pool cum tunnel intake. For the evaluation of commercial earthquake insurance risk, the majority of insurers, reinsurers and more recently, rating agencies, rely heavily on the output models developed by a few software vendors. Insurers and reinsurers evaluate their total risk based on output from one or more of these models, and develop prices that depend on the loss estimate data from the models. Liquefaction assessments of gravels and soils that contain a large gravel fraction are difficult. Undisturbed (intact) sampling of these soils is problematic and laboratory testing carried out on reconstituted samples or on frozen samples obtained from the field is time consuming, expensive, and interpretation of the results requires considerable judgment. A massive urban excavation is required to construct the below-grade rail platforms for the Transbay Transit Center. A performance-based approach was used to design the minimum stiffness of the shoring system to limit excavation-induced ground movements to appropriate magnitudes and minimize impact to adjacent infrastructure. During construction, a fully-automated near real-time digital geotechnical monitoring system that integrates wireless sensor data streams into an integrated database and decision support system called the Global Analyzer is used to track the performance of this excavation.
