This paper summarizes the monitoring experienced gained from several urban rock blasting projects in New York City and one just beyond the city limits. The majority of the experience was gained on the new South Ferry Terminal Structural Box project that included a new subway terminal station and section of tunnel on the number 1-line subway located in Battery Park in Lower Manhattan. The paper will review lessons learned and the limitations of using “off-the-shelf” seismographs for near-field blast monitoring. Coquitlam Dam, constructed in the early 1910s, is a 30 m high hydraulic fill embankment. The dam is situated in a region of high seismic hazard in British Columbia, Canada. The existing dam core and shells, and part of the dam foundation are deemed to be liquefiable under the design earthquake. A new 30 m high compacted earth core rockfill embankment dam is currently being constructed at the downstream toe of the existing dam. A 26 m deep excavation in hard sandy clays for the Halandri Station of the Stavros Extension of Athens Metro was completed in 2001. The excavation supporting system and the areas outside the excavation were instrumented. During the design, a finite element analysis of stresses and displacements was performed using soil parameters developed from laboratory and in-situ testing. The measured displacements had a similar distribution with depth as the calculated displacements, but were significantly smaller. The paper deals with the permanent protection of piers No. 8 and 9 of the Charles Bridge in Prague, Czech Republic. The bridge was built in the 14th century to the order of Emperor Charles IV. The bridge has damaged several times during the past 650 years, mainly by flood. Deeply founded and adequately resistant envelope around the foundations of both piers was designed. The envelope consists of the steel micropiles in combination with jet-grouted columns, which were both retracted into the bedrock. Vertical containment walls have been used as barriers to cut off hazardous fluid and chemical flow in the ground at contaminated sites. An application of this technique in South Carolina is to construct a 1.6-mile long containment wall along a dike using cement-bentonite slurry, which features low permeability and high compressive strength. The development of pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars for internal reinforcement of concrete, together with dedicated limit-state design guidelines, has led to a recent breakthrough in the field of tunnel excavation. The use of GFRP bars in softeyes, which are openings of retaining walls to be penetrated by tunnel boring machines (TBMs) during excavation, is becoming mainstream. The low shear strength and brittleness compared to steel bars facilitate and expedite excavation, resulting in time and cost saving, as well as improved safety. A part of Toulouse’s underground line B has been excavated by a 7.8 meters diameter earth-pressure balance machine. A comprehensive monitoring section has been installed in the Compans garden at a point where the tunnel cover is 12.8-meter and is running through overconsolidated clayey molasses underlying a 6.8 meters layer of made ground and gravels. The monitoring devices give full information on the ground movements above the tunnel and on deformations of the tunnel lining. Expansions at the Washington-Dulles International Airport since 1999 have required extensive vertical, open-cut rock excavations in Triassic age siltstone bedrock. These excavations have extended to depths of up to approximately 65 ft (20 m) adjacent to existing infrastructure for construction of new below-ground stations for the new Automated People Mover (APM) light rail system. An extensive laboratory and in situ investigation has been carried out aiming at studying the performance of deep mixing (column) improvement of alluvial soft soil. The laboratory research was primarily focused on the choice of an appropriate binder and dosage for the in situ application. Different binders (e.g. portland cement, composite cement, and blast furnace cement) in combination with quicklime were used. The results of a series of Unconfined Compression (UC) tests showed that blast furnace cement performs rather well in terms of strength and stiffness. Current practice for assessing liquefaction potential of granular soils depends heavily on in situ indices of density, and sometimes direct measurements of density. Correlations have been developed to predict resistance to liquefaction as a function of standard penetration test (SPT) blow count, cone penetrometer (CPT) tip resistance, shear-wave velocity (VS), or other index property. The new Woodrow Wilson Bridge (WWB) will replace the existing bridge over the Potomac River to connect Alexandria, Virginia to Prince Georges County, Maryland. The new WWB will extend approximately 1.1 miles across the river, with a 367-ft long bascule span in the main river channel where the water depth is about 36 ft. The site consists of very soft sludge and silt deposits. Pipe piles were used as foundation under the station structure. This paper presents details of the installation and axial compressive cyclic load tests performed on the UCD 76mm diameter highly instrumented steel pile at a soft clay test site in Belfast. Lateral stress measurements and pore pressures are obtained through pressure transducers mounted diametrically opposite each other in the pile wall at three levels. The pore pressures during installation are seen to drop off as pile-slip occurs for a given jacking stroke before rising to higher ultimate values, resulting in a brittle load response. A number of geophysical and seismically significantly related parameters are routinely measured in college laboratories. These are Magnetic field, Gravity field, Radioactivity, sub-surface temperature. After one major earthquake in India (M = 6.5, Latur earthquake of 29 September 1993) some colleges were used to measure these parameters. These parameters show premonitory changes prior to the occurrence of main shock. As the experiment was undertaken during post-seismic period the magnitudes of the seismic events were in the range of 4.5 to 5.0. The advantage of such method is that these are extended over an extensive area.
