The genesis of this enormous landslide is supposed in last geological periods when the Black Sea level had changed around 300m. The geologic structure is a celebrated combination of Sarmat limestone, marl and sensitive clay. The mechanics of failure reminds the landslides of Anchorage (Alyaska) from 1962 even without tsunami. This paper explores the process of piled foundation design and how it can benefit from the inclusion of previous test data and case histories from nearby or geologically similar sites. The interaction between the soil and the structure is critical to the behaviour of a pile and is a function of both the ground conditions and the method of pile construction. An accurate model of the ground conditions is required for the design, as is a detailed knowledge of the method of pile installation and its subsequent interaction with the soil. Sand aging, a process during which the engineering properties of clean sands such as stiffness, penetration resistance and liquefaction resistance may exhibit considerable improvement over periods of only weeks to months after deposition and/or densification by different ground improvement processes, has been shown over the past 30 years to be of considerable practical importance. Numerous examples from a range of projects are presented. Chemical, physical-mechanical, and microbiological processes are examined relative to their adequacy for explaining the observed behavior. The paper discusses major design aspects related to deep excavations in soft clays including; bottom heave stability; deformations and loads on the supporting structure; methods to improve stability and limit displacements; lessons learned from failures; and fi-nally design principles and safety aspects. The various issues are illustrated by both parametric finite element studies and experiences gained from specific case histories. The results show a strong correlation between bottom heave stability, loads and dis-placements, and significant arching effects when the bottom heave safety factor is low. 2 and 3D FEM analyses confirm the applicability of traditional limit equilibrium bottom heave stability …

Recent advances in strain measurement using optical fibers provide new opportunities for monitoring the performance of geotechnical structures during and after construction. Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) is an innovative technique that allows measurement of full strain profiles using standard optical fibers. In this paper, two case studies illustrating the application of the distributed optical fiber strain sensors are presented. One is monitoring of an old masonry tunnel when a new tunnel was constructed nearby and the other is monitoring the behavior of secant piled walls for basement construction. The paper deals with case studies of pile failure when cast-in-situ piling systems are adopted. The four commonly used methods of piling are the bailer, direct mud circulation, driven-cast-in-situ and rotary auger system. Failures in each of these cast-in-situ piling systems are discussed based on the failures noted in the initial testing or during execution. The causes for the failure are analyzed and the remedial measures adopted discussed.

The application of microbiological processes for improvement of the physical properties of soils offers the promise of sustainable, cost effective, non-disruptive ground improvement for a variety of geotechnical problems. Potentially beneficial applications of microbiological processes include increasing the stiffness of soil to reduce settlement and lateral deformations, increasing shear strength to enhance foundation bearing capacity and slope stability and to facilitate excavation and tunneling, reducing the susceptibility of granular soil to earthquake-induced liquefaction, reducing swell (expansion) potential of fine grained soil, and reducing permeability for groundwater control. This paper presents the findings of numerical studies based on the finite difference method for assessment of single pile behavior under simple dynamic lateral loads. At first, the results of an experimental dynamic lateral load test on a pipe pile driven in to sandy soil are compared with the results of this numerical modeling and some parameters are back calculated. Then piles with different length to diameter ratio, subjected to simple harmonic vibrations (sinusoidal vibrations) with different magnitudes of load and with a range of frequencies, are modeled. In 2006 many engineers run into a difficulty with very rarely phenomenon during the construction of high buildings in exactly determined area to East of Sofia. Large caverns have appeared unexpectedly in the clay on depth of 4÷7m, just under the fundaments. Their volume has been around 3 ÷ 4 m3. There were mean one cavern per 60 m2. Such caverns have revealed as in the time of foundation pit, as under the old buildings. It was found that this is the known from the literature suffusion in clay which is rarely phenomena. The adoption of design motions with a 2% rate of exceedance in 50 years in the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC 2005) has had a major impact on geotechnical engineering practice in Canada. The peak ground accelerations were doubled compared with the previous motions which had an exceedance rate of 10% in 50 years. The increase in accelerations has had a huge effect on assessments of liquefaction potential and slope stability, because the methods of assessment in common use depend on peak ground acceleration. In construction of roads or large residential complexes, the formation of large scale cut slopes is inevitable due to the large proportion of mountains in Korea. The problems involving the slope stability has emerged as a major concern. Inaccurate subsurface exploration can result in slope failure during or after the construction, thereby increasing the construction cost and delaying the construction duration. This study reviews problems involving the cut slope survey methods, design criteria, and examining the collapse mechanisms through various case studies. This study suggests the optimum survey methods and design criteria based on the possible failure mechanisms.

In this study, two earth dams located in Malaysia were studied. The Labong Dam is a non-homogenous earth dam, whilst the Bukit Merah Dam is a homogenous earth dam. The performances of both dams against seepage were studied through the analyses of both observed and simulated phreatic surfaces. Simulations of seepage rate and phreatic surfaces through the dam were conducted by using SEEP/W model. The study showed that the SEEP/W model was able to predict (simulate) both the seepage rates and phreatic surfaces of the homogeneous and non-homogeneous earth dams with a reasonable accuracy. The paper reports on the behaviour of a masonry dam built in the Italian Alps in the early twenties of the last century and still in operation for electric power supply. The dam is 31 m high and its waterproofing is ensured by a multi-layered impervious facing, a concrete cut-off and a grout curtain protruding into the foundation soils. This paper investigates the shear strength of municipal solid waste (MSW) using back analyses of failed waste slopes. Shear strength of MSW is a function of many factors such as waste type, composition, compaction, daily cover, moisture conditions, age, decomposition, overburden pressure, etc. These factors together with non-standardized sampling methods, insufficient sample size to be representative of in-situ conditions, and limited shear displacement or axial strain imposed during the shear tests affect the test results and have created considerable scatter in reported test results. The disastrous slope failure occurred at the Kethikal hill, in the outskirts of Mangalore city in NH 13, India, during the month of June 1998 soon after the heavy and continuous monsoon rains. For an in-depth understanding of the failure mechanism of loose fill slopes and the strengthening effect by soil nails, a comprehensive field study program has been carried out at a specially built slope. The Taum Sauk Upper Reservoir was built in the early 1960’s as a water storage reservoir for hydro-electric energy production. The reservoir was created by blasting rock from the top of Proffit Mountain. The rock debris generated was then used to construct a kidney shaped earthen embankment atop the mountain. The reservoir is located in Reynolds County near the town of Lesterville, Missouri. The Upper Reservoir was approximately 95 feet in depth and covered a surface area of roughly 55 acres. A peat levee at Wilnis in The Netherlands suddenly failed at the end of the relatively dry summer of 2003. On Monday, 29 August 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the U.S. gulf coast and breached, among other failures, the 17th Street Canal. These failures triggered large research programs. In the Wilnis case, it was eventually deduced that the 5-m horizontal translation of the levee was triggered by a combination of reduced weight by evaporation, shrinkage and cracking of the peat material, and an increased head in the sand layer under the dike.
