International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper presents a case history on the failure of Suranivet 9, a student dormitory in the campus of Suranaree University of Technology (SUT), Thailand. The dormitory encountered excessive differential settlement due to the variation in soil profile. Underpinning to extend the foundations down to stable stratum was employed to strengthen bearing capacity and minimize settlement. The underpinning design and procedure were summarized. In practice, the static formula was used for the preliminary micro-pile design (selection of pile section and length for different loads and soil profiles). The undrained shear strength (Su) of SUT silty clay was approximated using standard …
Characterization Of Piedmont Residual Soil And Saprolite In Maryland, Eric M. Klein, Jennifer L. Trimble
Characterization Of Piedmont Residual Soil And Saprolite In Maryland, Eric M. Klein, Jennifer L. Trimble
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Residual soils in the Eastern Piedmont Physiographic province are difficult to characterize because of the unique mineralogy and development of the soils. They are derived in place by weathering of the underlying gneiss and schist bedrock, and are characterized by a gradual transition from soil to decomposed-rock to rock with no clear demarcation between the strata. The soils generally consist of low plasticity micaceous clayey silts, sandy silts and silty sands. It is often difficult to obtain undisturbed samples of these soils and Intermediate Geo-Materials, so most shear strength and compressibility properties are derived from experience or correlations with index …

An Analysis Of Causes Of Urban Landslides In Residual Lateritic Soil, Rajib Kumar Goswami, Baleshwar Singh
An Analysis Of Causes Of Urban Landslides In Residual Lateritic Soil, Rajib Kumar Goswami, Baleshwar Singh
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Landslides in natural slopes of residual soil are a common problem encountered in tropical regions. Guwahati city, located in Assam in the north-eastern part of India, is an urban watershed covered by a number of hills and hillocks that are capped with lateritic soil. Although the slopes originally consisted of hard and strong rocks, their stability have been impaired by weathering, heavy rainfall and seepage flows. Encroachments and cuttings on the hill slopes due to unplanned urbanisation and earthquake tremors have aggravated the problem. A study of landslides was undertaken focussing on degree of weathering of the rock units, their …

For each case, embankment failure mechanism, construction method used for the embankments, soil …
Back Analysis Of The Malakassa Landslide Using The Multi-Block Model, Constantine A. Stamatopoulos, Stavros G. Aneroussis
Back Analysis Of The Malakassa Landslide Using The Multi-Block Model, Constantine A. Stamatopoulos, Stavros G. Aneroussis
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
During the early hours of 18-02-1995 a landslide occurred at Malakasa, on the 36th kilometer of the highway joining Greece's main cities, Athens and Thessaloniki. The computed deformed geometry using this model agrees reasonably well with that measured. The back-estimated soil strength of 16o is in the range of the measured values (8-19o). Finally, state-of-the-art stability analyses, using the back-estimated residual soil strength, illustrated that the location of the slip surface can be predicted if it is assumed that only the saturated soil below the water table loses its strength.

Case History Of Labor Accident Due To Slope Failure During Slope Excavation And Its Countermeasure Work, Kazuya Itoh, Sahaphol Timpong, Yasuo Toyosawa
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
About 15 to 20 workers die annually in labor accidents attributed to slope failure or rock fall during slope excavations in Japan. In this paper, a case history of slope failure occurred during the reconstruction of retaining wall is presented. The geotechnical centrifuge model tests are conducted to investigate the mechanism of slope failure. This paper focuses on the influence of wall stiffness and embedded depths of sheet piles or pipes on the prevention of slope failure. Based on the centrifuge test, it was found that the simple temporary wall used during the trench excavation in this case history could …
Evaluation And Stabilisation Of An Embankment At Sebastopol, South Wales, Uk, Austin Weltman, Xun Yuan
Evaluation And Stabilisation Of An Embankment At Sebastopol, South Wales, Uk, Austin Weltman, Xun Yuan
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper introduces a slope movement and related railway track movement at Sebastopol, South Wales, UK. The monitoring results including slope movements and groundwater levels are summarised and presented. The slope at Sebastopol has a long history of instability. Because of continued gradual movement of the railway line and accelerated movement in 2004, a series of small diameter ‘Grundomat’ micro-piles were installed alongside the track early in 2005 to increase the shear resistance of the underlying soil and to reduce the rate of slope movement to a small but manageable amount. The slope movements have been continuously monitored since the …
Pit Slope Failure Problems In Goan Iron Ore Mines, Goa, India, A. Santha Ram, S. P. Goyal
Pit Slope Failure Problems In Goan Iron Ore Mines, Goa, India, A. Santha Ram, S. P. Goyal
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The problem of open pit slope stability is a matter of concern when the mining operations go deeper followed by weak strata conditions. In Goa iron ore mines the problem of slope instability has been faced by several mines, after the on-set of monsoon. A review of case studies available on the subject demonstrates that the ground displacement, stress redistribution, effect of ground water, low strength characteristics of the slope forming materials played significant role for the cause of slope failures. Slope monitoring studies indicated that the mechanism of slope failures could be complex and dependent on failure pathways, where …

Prevention, Mitigation And Engineering Response For Geohazard In Thailand, Adichat Surinkum, Worawoot Tantiwanit, Jarin Tulyatid
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Thailand is situated in SE Asia where most of the area has been under the influence of monsoonal type of weather. Geological settings of the country is believed to be the result of the collision between Indian and Eurasian plates. The collision has great influences on the topographic, weather and tectonic activities of the area for a long time. These factors are closely related to a number of serious geohazards of the area. Such geohazards include landslide and tsunami caused by a large distant earthquake along the Indian – Eurasian subduction zone. Important geohazard cases in Thailand have been discussed …

Probabilistic Finite Elements With Dynamic Limit Bounds; A Case Study: 17th Street Flood Wall, New Orleans, Mohammadreza Rajabalinejad, P. H. A. J. M. Van Gelder, J. K. Vrijling
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The probabilistic approach provides a better understanding of failure mechanisms and occurrence probabilities as well as consequences of failure. Besides, main advantages of the probabilistic design in comparison with the deterministic design are: a more careful, more cost effective, and more reliable design of infrastructures. In the present study a new probabilistic approach is applied to the 17th Street Flood Wall, and its probability of failure under hurricane hazard, considering multiple failure mechanisms is assessed. The Monte Carlo (MC) simulation technique coupled with dynamic limit bounds (DLB) integrated with finite element approach is used. The performance of DLB and MC …

Seepage Through Different Concrete Cut Off Wall Connection Systems Case Study: Karkheh Storage Dam, Zakaria Zoorasna, Amir Hamidi, Ali Ghanbari
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Seepage and water flow is one of the most important factors in design of embankment dams. The seepage through the foundation of earth dams can be controlled using the concrete cut off walls. The hydraulic head reduces in connection zone of the cut off wall and core of the dam that results to high hydraulic gradients. As a result, erosion and water leakage may occur. In this regard, the design of concrete cut off wall connection to the clayey core of earth dam is important. In this research, the total flow and the hydraulic gradient are considered to study the …

Stabilization Of A 30 M High Riverbank In Canada With Nails, Plates And Roots, Michael Fabius, Myint Win Bo, Bernardo Villegas
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The natural river processes along a 30 m high riverbank of one of the largest tributaries to Lake Superior cause periodic landslides. After arresting toe erosion, local authorities needed to protect the infrastructure at the crest from further damage as the slope continued to flatten towards its long-term angle of repose. A long-term hazard management strategy was applied using the cautionary zone approach (CZA). Design criteria included a target safety factor, no construction impacts, no maintenance and a 75-year design life. The solution drew from 3 technologies: soil nails, laterally loaded piles and biotechnical stabilization. Steel nails, 35 mm diameter, …
The Stability Of Flood Defenses On Permeable Soils: The London Avenue Canal Failures In New Orleans, W. Kanning, S. Van Baars, J. K. Vrijling
The Stability Of Flood Defenses On Permeable Soils: The London Avenue Canal Failures In New Orleans, W. Kanning, S. Van Baars, J. K. Vrijling
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The two failures of the London Avenue Canal floodwalls contributed largely to the flooding of central New Orleans due to hurricane Katrina. In this paper, both failures are analyzed and compared to each other since the flood defenses are both located on permeable soils. Photo’s observation and calculations are used for the analysis. Both failures are caused by the permeable sand layer below the floodwall that allowed high pore water pressures to develop below the floodwall. However, the south breach seems to be caused by the piping failure mechanism and the north breach by loss of stability. At the South …

Investigation Of Landslides And Debris Flows In Tachia Watershed Between Maan Dam And Techi Dam, Chin-Tung Cheng, Jin-Ching Chern, Shian-Jin Chiou, Yen-Hsiang Lin
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The Chi-Chi earthquake and subsequent typhoon events induced severe landslides and debris flows in the watershed of Tachia river. It inflicted severe damage to the power generation facilities and highway links. For the rehabilitation planning, quantitative assessment of landslides, debris flows and river deposits were conducted by using aerial photos and satellite images obtained at six stages of earthquake and typhoon events. The future trends of landslide and debris flow were also investigated by using empirical models. The long-term deposition or scouring was also conducted by numerical simulation. The results show that over 50,000,000 to 70,000,000m3 of sliding volume …

Lessons To Be Learned From Surface Fault Ruptures In Iran Earthquakes, M. K. Jafari, S. M. Moosavi
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Since Iran is one of the seismically active regions, and many lessons are embedded in the observations of surface ruptures of Iran earthquakes, the use of case histories as a basis for the development of both insights and engineering judgment is considered. In this paper, the importance of earthquake fault rupture hazards are presented, and illustrative examples are used to demonstrate how the hazards associated with surface fault rupture and lessons achieved from field studies are presented for implementing effective engineering designs to mitigate surface fault rupture hazards.

Numerical Modeling Of Columnar Reinforced Ground 1999 Kocaeli Earthquake Case History, C. Guney Olgun, James R. Martin Ii
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The Kocaeli Earthquake (M=7.4) struck Turkey on August 17, 1999 and caused significant damage along Izmit Bay. Following the earthquake, the authors investigated the field performance at improved soil sites. Of particular interest was the Carrefour Shopping Center that was under construction during the earthquake. The reclaimed site is underlain by strata of saturated soft clays, silts, and liquefiable loose sands. Small-diameter jet-grout columns had been installed at close spacings to reduce settlements and prevent liquefaction-related damage beneath footings and mats. Nonlinear dynamic three-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to model the reinforced ground at Carrefour. The results show that …

Probabilistic Estimation Of Site Specific Fault Displacements, D. N. Lindberg, J. P. Buck, G. L. Manhart, R. C. Chaney, F. R. Bickner, G. A. Vadurro
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The College of the Redwoods (CR) located near Eureka, California would like to upgrade a series of existing buildings that are unfortunately located on secondary faults associated with the active Little Salmon Fault (LSF) zone. In the early 1990’s a deterministic value of the maximum dip-slip displacement that had occurred on one of these secondary faults located beneath the southeast building corner of the former library was measured to be 1.7 feet. This displacement was resolved into approximately 1.5 feet horizontal offset and 0.8 feet of vertical offset, based on the secondary fault plane dip. Geologically, it has not been …

Recent Damaging Earthquakes In Japan, 2003-2008, Robert Kayen
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
During the last six years, from 2003-2008, Japan has been struck by three significant and damaging earthquakes: The most recent M6.6 Niigata Chuetsu Oki earthquake of July 16, 2007 off the coast of Kashiwazaki City, Japan; The M6.6 Niigata Chuetsu earthquake of October 23, 2004, located in Niigata Prefecture in the central Uonuma Hills; and the M8.0 Tokachi Oki Earthquake of September 26, 2003 effecting southeastern Hokkaido Prefecture. These earthquakes stand out among many in a very active period of seismicity in Japan. Within the upper 100 km of the crust during this period, Japan experienced 472 earthquakes of magnitude …
Seismic Response Of Structures With Underground Stories Considering Non-Linear Soil-Structure Interaction, Amir H. Halabian, S. Hamid Hashemolhosseini, Hessam Saldourgar
Seismic Response Of Structures With Underground Stories Considering Non-Linear Soil-Structure Interaction, Amir H. Halabian, S. Hamid Hashemolhosseini, Hessam Saldourgar
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Most of the research conducted for soil-structure interaction analysis of structures are assuming the linear behavior of soil. It is well known that during strong ground excitations the soil adjacent to the structure behaves highly non-linear. The nonlinear soil behavior affects the soil-structure interaction in a complex way especially because of the inadequacy in modeling the unbounded soil medium. In the case where an elastic soil behavior is assumed, the surface motion will be amplified proportionally to the input motion. However, in reality the amplitude and frequency content of the response are modified due to the soil’s stiffness degradation and …
Case History Of The Malfunctioning Of A “Compressor - Foundation - Supporting Soil” System, Ion Vlad
Case History Of The Malfunctioning Of A “Compressor - Foundation - Supporting Soil” System, Ion Vlad
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The paper presents a case history related to the interaction of a compressor, its concrete block foundation and the supporting soil system. The owner of the compressor asked the Romanian National Center for Earthquake Engineering and Vibrations to solve the problem of the excessive vibration amplitudes that put the compressor out of service at a short time after starting to operate. The first step that was made was the in situ performance of measurements, in order to establish the dynamic properties of the compressor foundation, as well as the amplitudes of the vibrations at the operating speed. The design of …
Ground Vibration — Unique Case Studies In Indian Coal Mines, Kaushik Dey, B. K. Pal
Ground Vibration — Unique Case Studies In Indian Coal Mines, Kaushik Dey, B. K. Pal
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In India, after nationalization of coal mines, the coal production has been enormously increased with the drastic increased in demand. Fulfilment of demand is met by opening up the highly mechanized surface mines. In the past, the Indian surface coal mines were, in general, using conventional drilling-blasting technique with conjugation of a number of combinations like shovel-dumper, dragline, FEL-dumper etc. In the overburden benches, large scale blasting generated ground vibrations leading to structural damage. In order to control this, reduction in maximum charge per delay has got the importance in the mind of the mining as well as geotechnical engineers. …

It is examined by using the structure that a steel pipe pile and a PHC stake were arranged in the central part of the scrap tire. A consideration from full-size field experiment and the model experiment was done by this paper to examine a vibration decline character as propagation route countermeasure method of the ground vibration by the isolation wall which a scrap tire was used for.
Large Pile Group Design Optimization With Lateral Resistance Of Pile Cap, Wei Zheng
Large Pile Group Design Optimization With Lateral Resistance Of Pile Cap, Wei Zheng
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Lateral earth resistance of pile cap is usually ignored in the design practice in the United States. This part of lateral resistance could be significant for a large pile group design, particularly when the lateral load controls the design. A method is presented to calculate the lateral resistance of the pile cap based on FEMA 356 and compared with an approach from the Chinese Design Code. With the consideration of lateral resistance of the pile cap, an optimum spacing is found for a large strip-shape pile group to provide maximum lateral resistance. This design approach is applied to a case …

Potential Of Vibration Studies In The Soil Characterization Around Power Plants – A Case Study, R. Sreekala, N. Lakshmanan, K. Muthumani, N. Gopalakrishnan, K. Sathishkumar
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Propagation characteristics of waves generated by the various sources of vibration can be dependent on the type of the generated waves, which can be accessed by measuring particle motion in vertical, longitudinal and transverse direction. The monitoring of motion in three directions on the ground surface and in depth is important for the characterization of propagating waves. Vibrations of the machine foundations induce elastic waves in soil, which may affect surrounding buildings. Generally, the attenuation of vibrations on surface is composed of two factors namely geometric damping and material damping. The paper is an experimental investigation with regard to the …
