Machinery can affect engineering structures, as well as foundations supporting them and resting directly on the soil. Machines cause distinct dynamic forces depending on its manufacturing purposes, operating conditions, maintenance, design details a.s.o. The study presents the behavior of four machine – foundation systems in a dynamic operating regime. Two of the foundation systems support electric generators groups (CATERPILLAR type), operating at a speed of 1500 rpm, the other two sustaining similar PERKINS models, operating at the same speed. Vibration measurements for 3 types of quarry rock at a number of sites in Thailand have been carried out and analyzed. The dominant vibration parameters in bench blasting are based on the peak particle velocity and the blast frequency. These readings are evaluated using the threshold limit of damage and the probability method. Results indicate that the damage possibility is low and within the acceptable limit. A further step of evaluation is to predict the safe distance from vibration by utilizing the modified trend line. In June 2002, a 32-storey high quality commercial building with a 3-level deep basement, namely Chater House, was completed. The Chater House site was previously occupied by the Swire House and its basement structure and foundations obstructed the construction of the new basement. Temporary pipe pile walls with grout curtain were used to facilitate local trimming/demolition of the existing basement slab and pile caps. Foundation trenches for the buildings having underground floors and vehicular traffic tunnels are excavated in Moscow in congested urban housing environment. A retaining structure is a “slurry wall” made of cast-in-place reinforced concrete), and “soil-mixed-wall”. Retaining structures of trenches are fastened with the help of anchors, metal tie-beams, struts or floor structures. The discrete element method is an established method for considering discontinuous deformation behavior of joint systems. This paper provides a description of this algorithm used to model coupled hydraulic and mechanical effects of joints on rock mass behavior. The paper also describes Bistun rock slope stability analysis using empirical (SMR) and numerical (D.E.) methods. The behavior of the rock slope and rock blocks containing Bistun epigraph in grouting and groundwater flow has successfully simulated using UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code) program. Finally, results have been presented and discussed on slope stability condition and grouting pressure.

The Seattle Central Library project, which replaced the existing downtown library, consists of a twelve-story building with several below-grade levels. The excavation encompassed an entire city block and had plan dimensions of approximately 250 feet by 240 feet. The original excavation depth was up to 53 feet in height. The excavation was made in highly overconsolidated Seattle silts and clays (Lawton Clay). The Lawton Clay has been documented to exhibit expansive behavior along planes of weakness associated with stress relief upon excavation. This paper describes one of the most challenging off-shore artificial islands construction in the North of Caspian Sea, Kazakhstan. Two 130 m by 90 m artificial island where sheetpiling was employed were constructed for oil exploration. The islands are closed box structures whose front walls are composed of 15 m long sheetpiles and tied to the back sheetpile wall. Sheetpile driving is done by the aid vibro-hammers with low-pressure water jet assistance. The proposed construction site is extremely sensitive environmental area, known as “Special Ecological Zone” and “Specially Protected Zone”. The engineering approach to design and specification development for a deep excavation is presented along with construction instrumentation data that illustrates the concepts, criteria, and performance of the excavation shoring system. The project included an excavation of up to about 20 m depth, over 650 m long, and 20 m wide made through generally competent glacial overburden with 46 structures located immediately adjacent to the excavation. Excavation support was achieved using a braced soldier-pile and lagging wall system. The Evangelical Hospital located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania has experienced distress in the form of cracked floor slabs and displaced structural steel due to swelling of the underlying fill material and natural bedrock formation. The bedrock consisted of black, pyritic, calcareous shale from the Marcellus Formation of the Hamilton Group (Devonian Age). The fill materials beneath the cracked concrete floor slabs consisted of the weathered shale fragments from this formation. This article reports on a 5-storey historic building which was completely cored to build a new one inside its historic façades. A bending resistant steel framework was installed inside the construction ground and tied positively with the façades to stiffen them during construction works. Vertical loads were taken by a jet grouting gravity retaining wall, which also acted as supporting system for the building pit. The use of a conventional shallow foundation system in the construction of a baseball stadium on the Delaware River waterfront was only possible by improvement of existing soils using deep dynamic compaction (DDC). A chromium ore processing facility in Maryland was mandated by the State to undertake remedial steps to prevent further migration of contaminants to the soil, groundwater and surface water. The owner of the facility entered into a Consent Decree (CD) with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) to submit and execute a remedial design based on findings of site investigations. Tunnelling was part of the new Tren Urbano transit system in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Four tunnels in soil were designed and constructed with shotcrete linings using the sequential excavation method (SEM), which uses some aspects of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Four 6-m-diameter tunnels of about 100 m in length were required to preserve two historic structures located above the subway alignment. Despite the fact that corrugated steel culvert pipe (CSCP) is widely used for stream crossings and drainage in many transportation systems in the US, historically, very little has been done regarding its condition assessment and planned maintenance. This research provides a methodology for developing a comprehensive plan for inspection, cleaning, condition assessment and prediction of remaining service of CSCP. Inspection frequency guidelines were developed based upon culvert size, age, importance and environmental factors, e.g., corrosion and erosion, bed load and pH. Collapse of piled foundations in liquefiable soils has been observed in the majority of the recent strong earthquakes despite the fact that a large margin of safety is employed in their design. This paper critically reviews the current design methods and the underlying mechanism behind them. The current method of pile design under earthquake loading is based on a bending mechanism where the inertia and slope movement (lateral spreading) induce bending in the pile. This paper shows that this hypothesis of pile failure cannot explain some observations of pile failure. It has been identified that the current design codes of …

The refraction microtremor (ReMi) method uses standard P-wave, refraction recording equipment to record ambient noise and then uses a wavefield transformation to produce Rayleigh wave dispersion curves from which average one-dimensional shear-wave profile of the subsurface can be derived. The combination of commonly available equipment, simple recording with no source, a wavefield transformation data processing technique, and an interactive Rayleigh-wave dispersion modeling tool exploits the most effective aspects of the microtremor, spectral analysis of surface wave (SASW), and multichannel analysis of surface wave (MASW) techniques.
