Multimedia Modeling Of Organic Contaminants In The Passaic River Watershed, Lansana Coulibaly May 2000

Multimedia Modeling Of Organic Contaminants In The Passaic River Watershed, Lansana Coulibaly

Dissertations

A dynamic fate and transport multimedia environmental model was developed and applied to assess the release of five priority contaminants in the Passaic River Watershed, including: napthalene, toluene, trichloroethylene, 1-1-1 trichloroethane and xylene. The model uses the current releases of contaminants as well as cross-boundary advection to determine the fate and environmental distribution of these chemicals in the watershed. The model was developed using a dynamic fugacity approach in order to allow for scenario analysis such as source reductions and no-action alternatives. This modeling effort is expected to achieve a comprehensive assessment of contaminants not only in the proximity of …

Performance-Based Seismic Engineering Of Low And Medium-Rise Steel Frames, Saeid Rashidi Jan 2000

Performance-Based Seismic Engineering Of Low And Medium-Rise Steel Frames, Saeid Rashidi

Dissertations

The performance level of low and medium-rise steel frames designed according to the common force/strength approach of the UBC or NEHRP is determined. Several combinations of soil profile type, lateral-force-resisting system, and frame-member proportioning are included in the designs.

To evaluate the expected damage, nonlinear models of the designed frames are subjected to a number of actual and simulated ground motion accelerograms and appropriate structural response parameters such as, interstory drift, ductility demand, and dissipated hysteretic energy are obtained. In addition, a modified form of Park-Ang damage index is calculated for moment-resisting frames. The seismic performance of the steel frames …

The Influence Of High Performance Matrices On Fracture Behavior Of Concrete, Pusit Lertwattanaruk Jan 2000

The Influence Of High Performance Matrices On Fracture Behavior Of Concrete, Pusit Lertwattanaruk

Dissertations

Modification of cement matrices by the addition of micro particle pozzolanic materials such as silica fume and fly ash is known to improve the strength of concrete, but its contributions to fracture behavior remains unclear. In this study, the influence of replacing cement by silica fume and fly ash on the cement matrix-coarse aggregate interfacial bond, compressive stress-strain behavior and fracture behavior of concrete is investigated.

While the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) concept is not appropriate for concrete, a nonlinear fracture model based on the load vs. load-line deflection and the load vs. crack-mouthopening displacement (CMOD) responses of the …

Utilization Of Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator Fly Ash In Cement Mortars, Manaskorn Rachakornkij Jan 2000

Utilization Of Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator Fly Ash In Cement Mortars, Manaskorn Rachakornkij

Dissertations

Disposal of municipal solid waste has become a major problem in many countries around the world. With the benefits of substantial weight and volume reduction and potential energy recovery, incineration has become a promising municipal solid waste (MSW) management option. Despite the fact that incineration reduces volume and mass of the wastes by as much as 80%, there are still residues to be properly managed. This research is aimed at evaluating the potential of different types of MSWI fly ash from an incineration facility to be used in cement mortars by using existing standard test methods for cement and coal …

Finite Fraction Method For Tracking Desinfection By-Product Precursors In Water Treatment, Doanh Van Jan 2000

Finite Fraction Method For Tracking Desinfection By-Product Precursors In Water Treatment, Doanh Van

Dissertations

Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) has been the subject of recent regulatory activities and agenda. Among them are the Infonnation Collection Rule (ICR), the Disinfectants/Disinfection By-Product Rule (D/DBPR) and the Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (ESWTR). Both the latter two have provisions to limit the formation of disinfection by-products (DBP) by controlling reactivity and removal of DOM or both. Brief regulatory review of these rules was given.

Although the topic of DBP formation potential and DBP precursor removal have been studied by many researchers since Rooks (1974), the efficacy of methods that have been developed to date has been handicapped …

Long Term Risks Associated With Brownfield Containments, Shailesh Shirish Chirputkar May 1999

Long Term Risks Associated With Brownfield Containments, Shailesh Shirish Chirputkar

Dissertations

The sites at which the development is hindered by real or perceived contamination are called as Brownfield sites. It is a common trend in industry to develop these types of sites with surface and peripheral containments. It might prove unwise to develop the sites in this manner from a long term perspective without considering the associated risk. Because of this, a model has been proposed for long term risk assessments of brownfield containments.

Objectives of this study were to develop a contaminant transport model for flow of contaminants towards the surface and peripheral containments inside the site, a model for …

Physical And Geotechnical Characterization Of Water Treatment Plant Residuals, Swamy C. Basim May 1999

Physical And Geotechnical Characterization Of Water Treatment Plant Residuals, Swamy C. Basim

Dissertations

The study of Water Treatment Plant (WTP) residuals is of recent origin and very little information is available in literature regarding these residuals. These waste materials have high solids contents, even in the mechanically dewatered condition, making it difficult to handle. These, along with stringent environmental regulations have forced the water utilities to look for new disposal options for these residuals. For this purpose as well as for evaluating suitable options for the beneficial reuse of residuals, it is essential to characterize WTP residuals.

As the dewatered residuals are plastic, the researcher may be prompted to treat these materials as …

Development Of Computer Model And Expert System For Pneumatic Fracturing Of Geologic Formations, Brian Michael Sielski May 1999

Development Of Computer Model And Expert System For Pneumatic Fracturing Of Geologic Formations, Brian Michael Sielski

Dissertations

The objective of this study was the development of a new computer program called PF-Model to analyze pneumatic fracturing of geologic formations. Pneumatic fracturing is an in situ remediation process that involves injecting high pressure gas into soil or rock matrices to enhance permeability, as well as to introduce liquid and solid amendments. PF-Model has two principal components: (1) Site Screening, which heuristically evaluates sites with regard to process applicability; and (2) System Design, which uses the numerical solution of a coupled algorithm to generate preliminary design parameters.

Designed as an expert system, the Site Screening component is a high …

Pneumatic Fracture Propagation And Particulate Transport In Geologic Formations, Suresh Puppala Aug 1998

Pneumatic Fracture Propagation And Particulate Transport In Geologic Formations, Suresh Puppala

Dissertations

Pneumatic fracturing is an in situ remediation enhancement technology developed to increase the permeability of contaminated geologic formations. This technology can also be used to deliver atomized liquid and particulate supplements to geologic formations, thereby enhancing in situ processes such as bioremediation and reactive dechlorination.

The main objective of this study was the development of a mathematical model that simulates the propagation of pneumatic fractures in soil and rock formations. Pneumatic fracture propagation differs from other fluid fracturing phenomena in the propagation velocity (1-3 m/sec) and the viscosity of the fracturing fluid (1.9E-05 Pa•sec). For the purposes of model development, …

Analysis Of Safe Separation Distances From Natural Gas Transmission Pipelines, James Stephen Haklar Oct 1997

Analysis Of Safe Separation Distances From Natural Gas Transmission Pipelines, James Stephen Haklar

Dissertations

Accidental rupture of natural gas transmission pipelines with subsequent ignition of the escaping gas can result in the loss of life and property. In the United States, current means of protecting both the pipeline and the public include the establishment of class locations, in which specific pipeline design, construction and operation requirements must be attained. In addition, distances at which the pipelines can be safely set back from the community, called safe separation distances, have been developed in some European countries (e.g., Great Britain, the Netherlands) through use of risk assessment principles. However, to date there has been no simple, …

Distribution Of Velocities And Velocity Gradients In Mixing And Flocculation Vessels : Comparison Between Ldv Data And Cfd Predictions, Changgen Luo May 1997

Distribution Of Velocities And Velocity Gradients In Mixing And Flocculation Vessels : Comparison Between Ldv Data And Cfd Predictions, Changgen Luo

Dissertations

Flocculation is an operation of significant industrial relevance commonly encountered in many processes, including water and wastewater treatment. The physico-chemical phenomena of this process is strongly affected by the magnitude of the velocity gradients generated, typically through agitation, in rapid mix devices and flocculation vessels.

In this work the fluid dynamic characteristics of mechanically agitated systems, namely three different types of stirred tanks, which can be used as flocculation vessels, were studied. Both the mean and fluctuating velocities in all three directions were measured by using a Laser-Doppler Velocimeter (LDV). The velocity distribution, fluctuating velocities, power consumption and local velocity …

Non-Linear Evaluation Of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Columns, Mohammad Hassan Shams Jan 1997

Non-Linear Evaluation Of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Columns, Mohammad Hassan Shams

Dissertations

Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFT) columns have become increasingly popular in structural applications due to their high strength, high ductility, and large energy absorption capacity. These structural properties are the result of integral behavior of the concrete core and the steel tube. This research provides an analysis of the interaction of the concrete core and the steel tube in CFT columns.

While there have been many experimental studies of CFT columns, there has been no analytical work modeling the confining effect of the steel tube on the concrete core. Furthermore, current design procedures tend to underestimate the ultimate strengths of CFTs …

Fracture Mechanics Of High Strength Concrete Members, Rajendra K. Navalurkar Oct 1996

Fracture Mechanics Of High Strength Concrete Members, Rajendra K. Navalurkar

Dissertations

This study investigates the behavior of High Strength Concrete (HSC) under uniaxial state of stresses. Emphasis is placed on experimental evaluation of important mechanical and fracture properties. Owing to high brittleness of HSC, experimental results especially on tensile behavior have been largely limited and scarce. In this research, direct uniaxial tension tests are employed for determination of the post-peak tensile softening characteristics of HSC. The softening characteristics of high strength concrete is found to be considerably different than that of normal strength concrete (NSC). Fracture energies evaluated form the descending branch of the stress softening reveal significant drop in the …

The Constant Fracture Angle Model For Cementitious Materials, Suk Ki Kim May 1996

The Constant Fracture Angle Model For Cementitious Materials, Suk Ki Kim

Dissertations

Fracture mechanics of concrete has been investigated for the past two decades using linear elastic and nonlinear fracture mechanics concepts. The models proposed so far remain questionable largely due to specimen dependency of the proposed fracture parameters.

In this study, a new approach for modeling the fracture characteristics of concrete and fiber reinforced concrete is proposed. The model depends on the load CMOD relationship rather than the traditional load-deflection principle. Although energy consumed during fracture is definitely a direct function of the load displacement response, it was observed that traditional displacement measurement included an extraneous and erratic portion due to …

Development Of A Multivariate Qsar Model To Predict Desorption Of Halogenated Aliphatic Hydrocarbons From Activated Sludge Solids, Sudhi Ranjan Mukherjee May 1996

Development Of A Multivariate Qsar Model To Predict Desorption Of Halogenated Aliphatic Hydrocarbons From Activated Sludge Solids, Sudhi Ranjan Mukherjee

Dissertations

Data collected from different wastewater treatment processes have provided statistically significant evidence that many toxic organic contaminants on EPA's list of priority pollutants concentrate several orders of magnitude greater than influent concentrations in industrial and municipal wastewater sludges. Because of the reversibility of sorption processes, it is possible for sorbed organic compounds to desorb at a later time, hence making disposal of these sludges a potential problem. Although a number of models have been developed to predict sorption parameters, they have all been based on empirically derived descriptors whose validity is seriously compromised by the variation in available data for …

Discrete Element Modeling Of Dry Granular Material Using A Massively Parallel Supercomputer, David W. Washington May 1996

Discrete Element Modeling Of Dry Granular Material Using A Massively Parallel Supercomputer, David W. Washington

Dissertations

It is the state-of -the-art within Geotechnical Engineering to model soils as systems of particles rather than using the traditional continuum approach. Simulating these systems of particles for geotechnical boundary value problems results in systems which are of necessity large, motivating the application of massively parallel supercomputers. This thesis pursues such an approach.

The following work describes numerical experiments using a Discrete Element Method (DEM) paradigm for soils (Trubal) together with massively parallel computers with Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) architecture. The discrete element method describes the behavior of granular assemblies using the classical mechanics of discrete bodies. The computational …

Anaerobic Digestion And Acid Hydrolysis Of Nitrocellulose, Fong-Jung Tai Jan 1996

Anaerobic Digestion And Acid Hydrolysis Of Nitrocellulose, Fong-Jung Tai

Dissertations

In this investigation, studies were conducted to evaluate the biodegradation of nitrocellulose in anaerobic batch reactors with and without the supplemental carbon inducers, such as cellulose, cellobiose, and lactose. Results from the anaerobic study show that degradation of nitrocellulose alone is difficult and that nitrocellulose degradative enzymes could be induced by the three inducers tested. As high as 48.91% conversion could be obtained at Cellulose/Nitrocellulose ratio of 1 to I. Studies also indicated that type 20 and 50 celluloses would be more effective and optimum pH was about 6.4 in biodegradation of nitrocellulose. Three testing systems, namely, single-stage, two-stage, and …

A Theoretical Analysis Of Volatile Contaminant Removal By The Pneumatic Fracturing Process, Yuan Ding Oct 1995

A Theoretical Analysis Of Volatile Contaminant Removal By The Pneumatic Fracturing Process, Yuan Ding

Dissertations

A mathematical model that simulates the process of contaminant removal from a pneumatically induced fracture within a porous medium is presented. It includes: (1) model development; (2) parameter evaluation; (3) statistical sensitivity analysis; and (4) model validation.

Based on the dual porosity approach, a mathematical model for a fractured porous formation is developed for both two dimensional and axial symmetrical cases. This model constitutes a pair of coupled partial differential equations for the porous medium and discrete fracture, respectively. The initial and boundary conditions have been determined based on field considerations of a soil vapor extraction system. By means of …

Shear Strength And Fatigue Crack Propagation In Concrete By Energy Method, Wei Wang Oct 1995

Shear Strength And Fatigue Crack Propagation In Concrete By Energy Method, Wei Wang

Dissertations

The limit analysis methods have been commonly used to predict the ultimate flexure strength of reinforced concrete members over 50 years. However, current design formulas for shear in structural concrete are mostly empirical. In part one of this dissertation, attempts are made to apply the theory of plasticity to predict the shear strengths of reinforced concrete structures.

The modified Coulomb-Mohr failure criterion is used as the constitutive law of concrete, and the plastic flow is assumed to be associated with this failure criterion. A generalized formulation for energy dissipation in accordance with the failure criterion and associated flow rule is …

A Nondestructive Method For The Determination Of Fracture Energy In Concrete Structures, Been-Jyh Yu Oct 1995

A Nondestructive Method For The Determination Of Fracture Energy In Concrete Structures, Been-Jyh Yu

Dissertations

It is generally believed that linear elastic fracture mechanics concepts can not be employed in determining fracture parameters in concrete, and therefore most of the current research effort has focused on applying the principles in yielding fracture mechanics. Despite all these efforts, comparison of results reported by many investigators indicate wide variations in fracture toughness values even for essentially similar materials. The main source of discrepancy in the observed results is the existence of a large process zone at the crack tip. Hence, the amount of energy consumed in advancing the crack will depend on the size of the process …

Composite Beam Analogy Fracture Model (Cbafm) : A Non-Linear Fracture Mechanics Model For Concrete, Mohammed Enamul Haque May 1995

Composite Beam Analogy Fracture Model (Cbafm) : A Non-Linear Fracture Mechanics Model For Concrete, Mohammed Enamul Haque

Dissertations

The main objective of this dissertation is to develop a simple non-linear fracture mechanics model for the determination of fracture mechanics parameters for concrete, such as fracture process zone length (rp), critical fracture energy release rate (Gic), critical stress intensity factor (KO and fracture energy (GF). The fracture process zone (FPZ) is modeled as a damaged non-elastic cohesive band where the extent of damage due to microcracking varies from no damage at the boundary of FPZ to complete crack surface separation at the notch or macro-crack tip. The proposed method can predict theoretically both the pre-peak and post-peak load versus …

Micromechanics Of Hot Mix Asphalt Material Formulation And Numerical Simulation, Kuo-Neng G. Chang Apr 1995

Micromechanics Of Hot Mix Asphalt Material Formulation And Numerical Simulation, Kuo-Neng G. Chang

Dissertations

Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), a highway and airfield pavement material, is heterogeneous, granular, and composite. It is traditionally modeled as a homogeneous material using continuum mechanics or semi-empirical methods. As a result, the above models either neglect or over-simply component reactions, failing to predict field performance problems resulting from particle segregation. This research presents micromechanical modeling, a novel approach that accounts for the components.

A micromechanical model is developed for HMA by modeling it as an assembly of asphalt cement coated particles. The asphalt cement is modeled as a viscoelastic material. To represent asphalt cement, several viscoelastic elements (i.e. Maxwell, …

Analysis Of Plates And Reinforced Concrete Columns By Cubic B-Spline Function, Gang Wang Jan 1995

Analysis Of Plates And Reinforced Concrete Columns By Cubic B-Spline Function, Gang Wang

Dissertations

Applying spline functions to numerical structural analysis has been more common in recent years. The recent increase use of spline functions is mainly due to their excellent characteristics, such as sectionalized continuity, linear combination, flexibility, and easy use for various boundary conditions. The whole deformed shape of some structures or substructures can be described with one displacement function constructed by a series of spline functions. By doing this, the mesh generation and the huge computer memory space are no longer needed because only one single superelement can be used in the whole process. The choice of spline functions as displacement …

Behavior Of Concrete And Slender Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Cyclic Axial Compression With Bidirectional Eccentricities, Byong Youl Bahn Oct 1994

Behavior Of Concrete And Slender Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Cyclic Axial Compression With Bidirectional Eccentricities, Byong Youl Bahn

Dissertations

A rational analysis of reinforced concrete (R/C) structures requires satisfactory modeling of the behavior of concrete under general loading patterns. The behavioral characteristics of concrete dominantly depends upon its load history. For the study of concrete behavior, parametric study and experimental investigation into the behavior of concrete under load history of random cycles are performed. Through parametric study, the applicability of the previous concrete models is examined and a physically motivated modeling for the cyclic stress-strain relationships is proposed. The present modeling of concrete under general cyclic loading is initiated to provide substantial applicability, flexibility of mathematical expressions and furthermore …

Theoretical Evaluation Of The Break Off Test For Concrete, Arjuna Priyara Ranasinghe Oct 1994

Theoretical Evaluation Of The Break Off Test For Concrete, Arjuna Priyara Ranasinghe

Dissertations

Strength of concrete is normally measured using the standard cylinder or cube. The measured strength is used for design. The accuracy of concrete strength is frequently challenged, particularly in large concrete structures where size effect of the test specimens is attributed for the differences. Many nondestructive tests were developed to evaluate concrete strengths. In recent years, it was obvious that these tests are unreliable. As the infrastructure decays, more nondestructive tests are required to evaluate the existing structures.

The Break Off Test is a recently developed nondestructive test. Although substantial amount of experimental investigations have been carried out on this …

Behavior Of Biaxially Loaded Concrete-Encased Composite Columns, Pedro Ricardo Munoz Apr 1994

Behavior Of Biaxially Loaded Concrete-Encased Composite Columns, Pedro Ricardo Munoz

Dissertations

The theory of nonlinear behavior of biaxially loaded short and slender composite columns is used to study the load-deformation and moment-curvature of four pin-ended composite column specimens tested under axial compressive load and biaxial bending moments in a single curvature. The accuracy of the test results is verified by comparison with analytical results obtained by a method of analysis that includes the nonlinear material properties of concrete and steel and covers the ascending and descending branches of the linear segmented column specimen. A computational method is presented to model the analytical behavior of the biaxially loaded composite column. Its validity …

Constitutive Equation For Concrete Using Strain-Space Plasticity Model, Yuxiang Xing May 1993

Constitutive Equation For Concrete Using Strain-Space Plasticity Model, Yuxiang Xing

Dissertations

Plasticity theory has been used to model the concrete constitutive relationship for about two decades. With the modifications and refinement based on experimental data, achievement has been made in these plasticity models for concrete. Almost all the existing models are developed in stress space. With a lot of experimental data and more understanding about stress states of concrete, the stress-space model shows many advantages. Because of this and also due to conventional engineering practice, the stress-space plasticity approach has been in the dominant position. However, the conventional stress-space plasticity method has one inherent drawback in which it cannot deal with …

Tensile Behavior Of Concrete And Mortar Under Direct Impact Tensile Load, Kayumars Emad May 1993

Tensile Behavior Of Concrete And Mortar Under Direct Impact Tensile Load, Kayumars Emad

Dissertations

Structures are often subjected to impact loadings during their lifetime. Most structural specifications including the special provisions for seismic design in the current ACI building codes, have been developed on the basis of quasi-static assumptions. Cement composites are strain rate sensitive materials therefore, their properties determined under quasi-static condition should not be used to predict their performance under high strain rates.

The objectives of this investigation are:

  • to develop a standard test set-up for direct tensile testing of cementitious composites.
  • to study the tensile behavior of mortar and concrete under direct impact tensile load.
  • to develop a simplified formula to …

Unreinforced Masonry Structures : Nonlinear Analysis And Evaluation Of Some Rehab Schemes, Sanjay Mehta May 1993

Unreinforced Masonry Structures : Nonlinear Analysis And Evaluation Of Some Rehab Schemes, Sanjay Mehta

Dissertations

Unreinforced masonry (URM) structures have been a common type of construction in the past and are still used in regions of low seismicity. Retrofitting of these structures is necessary because of two reasons: Firstly, observed damage after earthquakes reveals that URM construction is one of the most hazardous constructions even in the region of low seismicity; secondly, reclassification of seismic zones would require retrofitting of existing structures to comply with new guidelines for earthquake design.

Retrofitting measures require that the response of original and new structural systems as well as their interaction be considered. It is therefore important to correctly …

Utilization Of Fly Ash In Concrete, Chai Jaturapitakkul May 1993

Utilization Of Fly Ash In Concrete, Chai Jaturapitakkul

Dissertations

Fly ash, a by-product of coal burning power plants, is produced in large quantities each year. It is commonly known that fly ash possesses pozzolanic behavior which can enhance the properties of concrete. Due to a lack of proper understanding on the formation of fly ash and its performance in concrete, the question of quality assurance has frequently been a major concern of engineers using fly ash in their construction projects. As a result, much fly ash is disposed of as waste material in landfills. Recent environmental concerns and a shortage of landfill space have rapidly escalated the disposal cost …
