Design Of End Bent Piles For Downdrag, Tanna Frye Oct 2024

Design Of End Bent Piles For Downdrag, Tanna Frye

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Embankments are commonly used for bridge approaches, with mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls being the preferred choice in Florida. However, the construction of embankments leads to the settlement of the underlying soil, regardless of soil type. When piles are driven before embankment construction, the initial settlement of the original soil creates relative movement between the pile and the surrounding soil, introducing frictional forces. When the existing soils move downward relative to the pile, a downward-oriented side shear known as downdrag is introduced. While downdrag is addressed in current codes and textbooks, it is often only briefly mentioned and primarily in …

Organic Amendments Improve The Quality Of Coal Gob Spoils: A Sustainable Mining Waste Reclamation Method, Zhiming Zhang, Anshuman Satpathy, Kirby Morris, Abhishek Roychowdhury, Rupali Datta, Dibyendu Sarkar

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Coal mine tailings can lead to a range of environmental problems, including toxic metal contamination, soil erosion, acid mine drainage, and increased salinity. Mine spoils from coal mining activities accumulated as gob piles are difficult to reclaim due to constraints such as a steep slope, unsuitable pH, insufficient nutrient supply, metal toxicity, low water-holding capacity, and poor soil structure. We investigated the efficiency of low-cost amendments on coal gob spoils from Carthage Coal Field (CCF) in New Mexico in improving the quality of coal gob spoils. Gob spoil was incubated for 90 days with various rates of organic amendments such …

Advancing Data-Driven Disaster Debris Characterization And Quantification, Jasmine Bekkaye Oct 2024

Advancing Data-Driven Disaster Debris Characterization And Quantification, Jasmine Bekkaye

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Natural hazards generate tremendous amounts of debris that negatively impact communities and overwhelm waste management infrastructure. The challenge in disaster debris planning and management stems from inconsistent and scarce post-disaster debris quantity data due to the chaotic nature of recovery operations. This leads to a limited understanding of key factors influencing disaster debris generation across hazards and regions, hindering the accuracy and efficiency of modeling. With the increasing availability of comprehensive post-disaster waste datasets, the capacity to understand debris generation is expanding. This dissertation aims to fill knowledge gaps on disaster debris generation as follows: (1) investigate existing technologies for …

Assessment Of Employee Risks In Construction Of Megahousing Projects Using Structural Equation Modeling, Mohamed Nabawy

Civil Engineering

One of the most crucial objectives for nations with dense populations worldwide is the construction of mega projects. Egypt's 2030 strategy emphasizes how crucial it is to build MHP in order to accommodate the country's enormous population growth. However, there has been a nighty eight percent delay in the completion of house construction projects due to employees' inadequate training, technology use, and uncertainty management. Enhancing the administrative, technical, and management skills of staff members can prevent delays in Egypt's delivery of sustainable MHP. The aim of this study is to develop an employee management model (ESEM) in order to assess …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Magnesium phosphate cement-based ultra-high-performance concrete (MPC-UHPC) develops strength rapidly but shows unsatisfactory ultimate strength (<150 >MPa). In this study, ultrafine fly ash (UFA) was incorporated in MPC-UHPC to improve mechanical properties. The effect of UFA content, varying from 0 % to 15 %, by weight of binder, on microstructure, fiber pullout behavior, mechanical strengths, flexural and tensile properties of MPC-UHPC reinforced with 2 vol% steel fibers was investigated. Experimental results indicate that the incorporation of 10 %–15 % UFA with mean particle size of 1.4 µm was effective in reducing porosity and microcracks of binder matrix and fiber–matrix interface, thereby …

Comparison Of Outlier Detection Approaches For Compressive Strength Of Cement-Based Mortars, Nara Cangussu, Paula Milheiro-Oliveira, Ana Mafalda Matos, Farhad Aslani, Lino Maia Oct 2024

Comparison Of Outlier Detection Approaches For Compressive Strength Of Cement-Based Mortars, Nara Cangussu, Paula Milheiro-Oliveira, Ana Mafalda Matos, Farhad Aslani, Lino Maia

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

EN 196-1 states that the compressive strength result of testing of standard mortar specimens corresponds to the average of the six individual measurements. If one of the six individual measurements varies more than ±10 % from the average, it must be excluded, and a new average is calculated with the five remaining values. This methodology might be interesting for quality control or characterization of cement; however, it may not be the best approach for research or scientific purposes. Applying EN 196-1 to non-standard cement-based mortars with multiple and even unconventional supplementary cementitious materials may induce even more variation in the …

Optimal Site Layout Planning For Construction Projects Over Waterways, Rana M. Azzam, Nashwa Mohamed Yossef Prof, Adel I. Eldosouky Prof

Journal of Engineering Research

Construction site layout planning is an important part of a project's success. An effective construction layout plan can enhance the performance of the construction process by improving productivity, ensuring safety, and reducing costs. Given the importance of bridges over a waterway and the lack of interest in previous research for planning a construction site over a waterway. This paper concentrates on the problems of site planning for such projects, including the problem of limited site space. The study indicated that constructing an offshore terminal is one of the primary requirements for projects with limited space being carried out on a …

Influence Of Concrete Jacketing On The Performance Of Steel Columns Under Blast Induced Progressive Collapse, Hanan Eltobgy Prof., Mohamed Saeed Refaey Dr., Mohamed Ahmed Aboshok Dr., Ahmed Emadel-Din Abdel-Aal Eng. Oct 2024

Influence Of Concrete Jacketing On The Performance Of Steel Columns Under Blast Induced Progressive Collapse, Hanan Eltobgy Prof., Mohamed Saeed Refaey Dr., Mohamed Ahmed Aboshok Dr., Ahmed Emadel-Din Abdel-Aal Eng.

Journal of Engineering Research

This study investigates the influence of concrete jacketing on the performance of steel columns subjected to blast loading, which can lead to progressive collapse. Using Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations, the research evaluates concrete-encased steel columns with different concrete cover thicknesses to measure their resistance to lateral displacements induced by blasts. Findings reveal that increasing the thickness of the concrete cover markedly improves the column's ability to withstand such loads. The study also highlights that steel has better energy dissipation properties than concrete. It examines how the combined challenges of progressive collapse and blast loading influence the overall structural response …

On The Turbulent Viscosity Parameter Cμ In The K–Ε Model, Harshit Mishra, Subhas Karan Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) models depend on empirical constants to close the Reynolds stress terms. The empirical constants were obtained using experiments conducted at low Reynolds numbers several decades ago. In this paper, we revisit the turbulent viscosity parameter Cμ, based on the stress–intensity ratio c2 = |uw|/k. Here, |uw| and k are the absolute values of the Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy, respectively. Through a priori comparisons, we find that the currently accepted value of Cμ = 0.09 does not agree with the latest direct numerical simulation (DNS) and experimental datasets of wall-bounded turbulent planar flows. Therefore, …
