The geopolymer concrete is a more durable and green material with less CO2 emission and less energy consuming as compared with the widely used Portland cement (PC) concrete. In this thesis, an experimental study of the thermo-mechanical properties of a cement prepared using a class F fly ash and three different alkali-activators (NaOH activator, NaOH and Na2SiO3 mixture activator, and KOH and Na2SiO3 mixture activator) is presented. The marshland in southern Louisiana is a vital resource that many people and wildlife depend on. Terrebonne Bay was chosen for this research because it has experienced one of the largest wetland loss rates among Louisiana estuaries. Investigations of wave power and shoreline retreat rate could provide decision makers with a better understanding of the contributing wave force responsible for local shoreline retreat. A strong relationship has been shown to exist between wave power and shoreline retreat [Schwimmer (2001) and Marani et al. (2011)]. For many years, the Cone Penetrometer Test (CPT), Flat Plate Dilatometer Test (DMT) and Standard Penetration Test (SPT) have been used as in-situ tools to assess the liquefaction potential of soils. Given the importance of evaluating liquefaction potential in the South Carolina Coastal Plain (SCCP), research was conducted to study the soil behavior of soils prone to liquefaction, develop site specific correlations between SPT, DMT and CPT testing parameters and evaluate the liquefaction susceptibility of the soils in the SCCP. Use of polymers as partial replacement for Portland cement in cement mortar and concrete can diminish several drawbacks of these composites such as low tensile strength and strain capacity, high permeability and low adhesion. Main reasons for the use of polymers are to improve damage tolerance, adhesion, and resistance to water permeation. "During coal and iron mining, pyrite is often exposed to oxygen, causing acid mine drainage (AMD). Acid mine drainage has characteristic traits of: a rust color, low pH levels (around 3 or 4) and high concentrations of sulfate, metal sulfates and heavy metals.

Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) are often utilized in acid mine drainage treatment by implementing them into biochemical reactors (BCR). "This study investigates two bridge decks in the state of Missouri using both nondestructive and destructive testing methods. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is responsible for the monitoring and maintenance of over 10,000 bridges. Currently monitoring of these bridges includes a comprehensive visual inspection. In this study, ground-coupled ground penetrating radar (GPR) is used to estimate deterioration, along with other traditional methods, including visual inspection, and core evaluation. Extracted core samples were carefully examined, and the volume of permeable pore space was determined for each core. "Occupants of former methamphetamine laboratories, often residences, may experience increased exposure through the accumulation of the methamphetamine in skin oil. The objectives of this study were to determine equilibrium partition coefficients of vapor-phase methamphetamine with artificial skin oil (ASO), artificial skin oil without fatty acids and real skin oil. A 10 L flow through stainless-steel chamber and in-line filter holders were used to expose skin-oil coated filters to vapor-phase methamphetamine at concentrations ranging from 12 ppb to 159 ppb and samples were analyzed for exposure time periods from 2 hours to 60 days. This study investigated the physical characteristics of lightweight concrete produced using waste materials as coarse aggregate. The study was inspired by the author’s Peace Corps service in Kilwa, Tanzania. Coconut shell, sisal fiber, and PET plastic were chosen as the test waste products due to their abundance in the area. Two mixes were produced for each waste product and the mix proportions designed for resulting compressive strengths of 3000 and 5000 psi. This paper presents the outcome of a study of an I-section Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) beam including retrofitting for damage effects. A total of three beam tests were conducted in the following sequence: GFRP beam with no retrofitting and a single mid-span web brace; the partially damaged (cracked) beam with GFRP plates used for retrofitting; and the retrofitted beam re-tested with the lateral brace at the top flange level. Traffic incidents cause a ripple effect of reduced travel speeds, lane changes, and the pursuit of alternative routes that results in gridlock on the immediately affected and surrounding roadways. The disruptions caused by the secondary effects significantly degrade travel time reliability, which is of great concern to the emergency planners who manage evacuations.
