Seismic Response Of Peaty Organic Soils As A Levee Foundation Material, Robb E.S. Moss, Justin C. Hollenback Mar 2011

Seismic Response Of Peaty Organic Soils As A Levee Foundation Material, Robb E.S. Moss, Justin C. Hollenback

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The dynamic response of peaty organic soils is not well understood but its poor competency as an engineering material is well known. Its use as a foundation material is generally avoided through careful selection of project location, or removal and replacement with more suitable material. In certain situations peaty organic soils are unavoidable because of prior land use and subsequent development of infrastructure. In a delta environment levees are often found to be overlying peaty organic deposits, the California Bay Delta and New Orleans levee systems are two important examples. The Bay Delta is in a seismically active area and …

Modeling Enhanced Storage Of Groundwater Contaminants Due To The Presence Of Cracks In Low Permeability Zones Underlying Contaminant Source Areas, Jeremy M. Miniter

Theses and Dissertations

Throughout DoD, chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs), a type of Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (DNAPL), have been frequently used. In the subsurface, spilled DNAPLs may pool atop low permeability clay layers. In this study a numerical model is constructed using the Groundwater Modeling System to assess how cracks in the clay, either pre-existing or the result of DNAPL-clay interactions, might impact a dissolved CAH plume generated by the DNAPL source. The conceptual model posits a DNAPL source in a high permeability sand aquifer sitting atop a low permeability clay layer. The model assumes dissolved CAH generated by the DNAPL is transported …

Impact Of Snow Removal Operations On Thermoplastic Pavement Markings, Monica L. Monfette Mar 2011

Impact Of Snow Removal Operations On Thermoplastic Pavement Markings, Monica L. Monfette

Theses and Dissertations

This pilot study explored the effect snow removal operations have on thermoplastic pavement markings. Including snow removal as a separate independent variable is unique because much of the previous research performed on pavement marking degradation mentioned snow removal as a direct cause in a marking degrading more rapidly; however, it is mentioned as an afterthought and a suggestion to be considered in future research. This pilot study looked at 10 thermoplastic markings and all marking data were collected in the field, using a hand-held retroreflectometer. Data collected began 60 days after initial marking application and ended 12 months after initial …

Modeling Vertical Flow Treatment Wetland Hydraulics To Optimize Treatment Efficiency, David T. Roen Ii Mar 2011

Modeling Vertical Flow Treatment Wetland Hydraulics To Optimize Treatment Efficiency, David T. Roen Ii

Theses and Dissertations

An upward Vertical Flow Treatment Wetland (uVFTW) at Wright Patterson AFB designed to bioremediate contaminated groundwater exhibits hydraulic short-circuiting. Prior studies estimated that groundwater flowed through less than 50% of the wetland’s volume, and that the mean residence time was significantly less than the nominal residence time, which was calculated assuming flow through the entire wetland volume. The objective of this research was to investigate how uVFTW hydraulics affects treatment efficiency, and to propose design strategies to maximize treatment efficiency. A groundwater flow and contaminant transport model of a uVFTW that couples hydraulics and degradation kinetics was built and applied …

Development Of Probability Based Intensity- Duration-Frequency Curves Under Climate Change, Tarana A. Solaiman, Slobodan P. Simonovic

Water Resources Research Report

Hydrologic design of storm sewers, culverts, retention/detention basins and other components of storm water management systems are typically performed based on specified design storms derived from the rainfall intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) estimates and an assumed temporal distribution of rainfall. Use of inappropriate data or design storms could lead to malfunctions of the infrastructure systems: over-estimation may result in costly over-design or under-estimation may be associated with risk and human safety. One of the expected hydroclimatic impacts of climate change for London is the increase in the magnitude and frequency of extreme rainfalls which can have serious impact on the design, operation …

Probabilistic Fault Displacement Hazard Analysis For Reverse Faults And Surface Rupture Scale Invariance, Zachary E. Ross Mar 2011

Probabilistic Fault Displacement Hazard Analysis For Reverse Faults And Surface Rupture Scale Invariance, Zachary E. Ross

Master's Theses

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'}

A methodology is presented for evaluating the potential surface fault displacement on reverse faults in a probabilistic manner. This methodology follows the procedures put forth for Probabilistic Fault Displacement Hazard Analysis (PFDHA). Empirical probability distributions that are central to performing a PFDHA are derived from field investigations of reverse faulting events. Statistical analyses are used to test previously assumed properties of scale invariance with respect to magnitude for normalized displacement. It is found that normalized displacement is statistically invariant with respect to magnitude and focal mechanism, allowing for the …
