Optimal Estimation For Key Parameters Of The Marine Quality Model Using Data-Driven Neural Network, Ming-Chang Li, Shu-Xiu Liang, Zhao-Chen Sun, Guang-Yu Zhang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Marine water quality models are complicated because of their multi-parameter and multi-response characteristics. One major difficulty with water quality models is the accurate estimation of model parameters. In this paper, a new method based on a data-driven model (DDM) is developed to retrieve the value of model parameters. All training data are calculated by numerical water quality models from results of multiparameter matching design cases so the physical properties are not disturbed. The concept is to find the relationship between model parameters and the pollution concentration values of interior stations. Field data are imported into the relationship for inversing optimal …

Maintenance Algorithm And Management System Of Sidewalk Facility, Lee-Kuo Lin, Chen-You Jian
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Sidewalk is one kind of infrastructure systems in each city, because every sidewalk facility is used by pedestrians, so the maintenance algorithm should be evaluated and worked with users’ role. To echo this reasonable concept, this research investigates several using influence factors, which were collected and evaluated from pedestrians. For statistical analysis, scientific tools including Delphi method, analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and fuzzy theory were used to analyze and establish a preliminary evaluation model of sidewalk maintenance system. In order to use this model pragmatically, this research also establishes a portable prototype system at PDA hardware. With this portable system, …
A Wide Speed Range Sensorless Control Technique Of Brushless Dc Motors For Electric Propulsors, Min-Fu Hsieh, Hung-Ju Liao
A Wide Speed Range Sensorless Control Technique Of Brushless Dc Motors For Electric Propulsors, Min-Fu Hsieh, Hung-Ju Liao
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents a sensorless drive technique for permanent-magnet brushless DC motors applied to electric propulsors of small ships or underwater vehicles. Propulsors enveloping electric motors (e.g., POD or subsea thrusters) have been increasingly applied due to their advantages of excellent maneuverability, high efficiency and low maintenance costs. To secure reliable operation under water, sensorless control is considered as an appropriate technique. However, conventional sensorless techniques often suffer problems of narrow speed range and low efficiency, particularly when the propulsors sustain heavy load at high speed operation. Hence, a sensorless technique with a wide speed range is developed in this …

A Study Of Identifying Success Variables For Construction Partnering Via Sem Framework, Tung-Tsan Chen, Chih-Han Kao
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Owners and contractors in construction partnerships cooperate to quickly achieve results with reduced start-up costs, achieve a win-win result for both parties, increase efficiency, and reduce the possibility of conflict in construction projects. This study explored success variables (SVs) in construction partnerships via a novel framework. A questionnaire survey was distributed to experienced practitioners in the Taiwan construction industry. Factor analysis was applied to extract SVs based on the questionnaire results. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was then used to verify the relationships between the SVs identified in construction partnership. The analytical results showed that four success factors (SFs) in construction …
The Study Of Ship Collision Avoidance Route Planning By Ant Colony Algorithm, Ming-Cheng Tsou, Chao-Kuang Hsueh
The Study Of Ship Collision Avoidance Route Planning By Ant Colony Algorithm, Ming-Cheng Tsou, Chao-Kuang Hsueh
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Maritime traffic is becoming more complex every day. At present, due to technological advances and to new maritime regulations, there is increasing demand for new nautical marine instruments to be installed into the bridge, and the breadth of navigational information complicates on-duty officers’ decisions. Therefore, if decision support tools can be used to help deal with navigational decision-making, human errors arising from subjective judgments can be reduced, and sea transport safety improved. This research uses the concept of e-navigation as a framework, positioning collision avoidance path planning as the main theme, and applies an Ant Colony Algorithm (ACA) in the …

Determination Of Interfaces In Soil Layers By Sound Wave Analysis With Cone Penetration Tests, Huei-Wen Chang, Tseng-Hung Chang, Viet-Tuong Nguyen, Chih-Wei Wang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This experimental study precisely identifies the soil layer interface using sound signals collected during cone penetration tests (CPTs). Using the high sensitivity of the sound sensor at the cone tip, this study effectively increases the accuracy in identifying the soil interface location. Shiluo sand and Jhongda Lateritic soil were used to construct large-scale soil layers. An acoustic CPT was applied to determine sound pressure and its root mean square (RMS). The Fourier spectrum and Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) method were utilized and compared in their ability to analyze sound signals. The HHT method with a local energy-instantaneous frequencytime distribution performed well. …

Reliability Estimation Of Complex Numerical Problems Using Modified Conditional Expectation Method, Christopher D. Eamon, Bulakorn Charumas
Reliability Estimation Of Complex Numerical Problems Using Modified Conditional Expectation Method, Christopher D. Eamon, Bulakorn Charumas
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications
A simulation-based structural reliability analysis method is presented. It is intended as an alternate approach to estimate reliability for problems for which most-probable point of failure methods fail and when computational resources are limited. The proposed method combines conditional expectation and estimating the PDF or CDF of a selected portion of the limit state. In the proposed approach, complex limit state functions are simplified to two random variable problems. The success of the simplification depends on the quality of the CDF estimate. Results indicate that the method may provide accurate and efficient solutions for some difficult reliability problems.

Study Of Load Transfer Efficiency Of Airfield Rigid Pavement Joints Based On Stresses And Deflections, Ashish Wadkar
Study Of Load Transfer Efficiency Of Airfield Rigid Pavement Joints Based On Stresses And Deflections, Ashish Wadkar
Theses and Dissertations
The concept of joint load transfer efficiency is very important and fundamental to Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) airfield rigid pavement thickness design procedures. The FAA procedure assumes 25% of stress applied to the edge is transferred to the adjoining slab. Moreover, since it is not convenient or practical to measure stress-based load transfer efficiency [LTE (S)], field measurement of load transfer efficiency includes computation of the ratio of unloaded slab deflection to loaded slab deflection. Falling weight deflectometer (FWD) generally serves the purpose of measurement of deflection-based load transfer efficiency [LTE (6)]. The true load transfer is defined by stress …

Scale Dependence Of Radar Rainfall Uncertainty: Initial Evaluation Of Nexrad's New Super-Resolution Data For Hydrologic Applications, Bong Chul Seo, Witold F. Krajewski
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study explores the scale effects of radar rainfall accumulation fields generated using the new super-resolution level II radar reflectivity data acquired by the Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) network of the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) weather radars. Eleven months (May 2008-August 2009, exclusive of winter months) of high-density rain gauge network data are used to describe the uncertainty structure of radar rainfall and rain gauge representativeness with respect to five spatial scales (0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 km). While both uncertainties of gauge representativeness and radar rainfall show simple scaling behavior, the uncertainty of radar rainfall is …

A Junction And Drop-Shaft Boundary Conditions For Modeling Free Surface, Pressurized, And Mixed Free Surface-Pressurized Transient Flows, Arturo S. León, Xiaofeng Liu, Mohamed S. Ghidaoui, Arthur R. Schmidt, Marcelo H. García
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A junction and drop-shaft boundary conditions (BCs) for one-dimensional modeling of transient flows in single-phase conditions (pure liquid) are formulated, implemented and their accuracy are evaluated using two Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models. The BCs are formulated for the case when mixed flows are simulated using two sets of govern- ing equations, the Saint Venant equations for the free surface regions and the compressible water hammer equations for the pressurized regions. The proposed BCs handle all possible flow regimes and their combinations. The flow in each pipe can range from free surface to pressurized flow and the water depth at …

A Classification Tree Based Modeling Approach For Segment Related Crashes On Multilane Highways, Anurag Pande, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Abhishek Das
A Classification Tree Based Modeling Approach For Segment Related Crashes On Multilane Highways, Anurag Pande, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Abhishek Das
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Introduction: This study presents a classification tree based alternative to crash frequency analysis for analyzing crashes on mid-block segments of multilane arterials.
Method: The traditional approach of modeling counts of crashes that occur over a period of time works well for intersection crashes where each intersection itself provides a well-defined unit over which to aggregate the crash data. However, in the case of mid-block segments the crash frequency based approach requires segmentation of the arterial corridor into segments of arbitrary lengths. In this study we have used random samples of time, day of week, and location (i.e., milepost) …
