Online Database Of Deep Excavation Performance And Prediction, Dimitrios C. Konstantakos
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Deep excavations can comprise one of the most challenging design and construction geotechnical problems. Many factors affect their performance including soil strength, ground-water, building surcharges, construction methods, and construction techniques. Engineers are confounded with the complex problem of predicting behavior while producing a safe and economical design. Typical parameters of interest are design wall moments, bracing forces, wall displacements, and ground or building settlements. Many authors have compiled case histories that quantify maximum observed displacements in various publications. Often, these publications include benchmarking of observed behavior otherwise known as Class “C” predictions. Few authors have compiled Class “A” predictions where …

The Selection Of An Earth Retention System At The Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel Project, Shahriyar Mojahed, Mark French
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project also known as "Big Dig" has been the largest public work ever attempted in the American history. The selection of an appropriate earth retaining system for elimination of ground movement and preservation of adjacent structures was a key constructability challenge for construction practitioners at the CA/T. This paper explains the critical factors which had an effect on the selection of the Soldier Pile-Tremie Concrete (SPTC) slurry walls at the project. The advantageous of this system has been illustrated for other projects that face similar challenging conditions.

Practical Lessons From Failure Of A Reinforced Soil Retaining Wall On A Major Highway, P. Jagannatha Rao
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A “Reinforced Soil Retaining Wall” (RSR) wall of 10.5m height collapsed about 5 years after construction. HDPE geogrids were used as reinforcement. The facia panels suffered outward movements during construction and the deformations continued to increase. A 16m long stretch of the RSR wall failed and the failure wedge cut through four layers of reinforcement. The paper analyses the role of different factors in causing the failure. Tension tests were carried out on the geogrids exhumed from the failed zone. A significant loss in the strength of these grids was found which may be attributed to the high ambient temperatures …

Characterization Of The Shear-Induced Potential (Sip) In Clay And The Application To Landslide Sites, Koichi Nakagawa, Shigenobu Yamada, Isamu Tsuka
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Electrical polarizations were observed in common fine soil aggregates in shear deformation tests and simulations conducted in a laboratory. This electric potential is called Shear-induced Potential (SIP). The SIP can be interpreted as the physicochemical interaction between the surface of clay particles and interstitial water by the kinetics of the electric double layer. The SIP could not be detected in a remolded craft clay sample, which was possibly treated with electrically non-dipole oil. In the laboratory, a plane strain test under the un-drained condition was carried out to reveal the characteristics of the polarization accompanying the shear deformation. Gouges from …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Bioengineering including native vegetation is an ancient method of improving the stability of slopes. In modern railway engineering, this technique is re-captured for increasing the soil stiffness and shear strength of sub-grade beneath rail tracks. A mathematical model for the rate of root water uptake has been developed considering ground conditions, type of vegetation and climatic parameters. The three independent features in the root water uptake model considered in detail are soil suction, root distribution, and potential transpiration. In order to establish a rigorous analysis for estimating the actual transpiration or root water uptake, the above mentioned factors have been …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The Department of Highways, Thailand, has used the pavement recycling technique to restore damaged pavement since 1965. This technique is economical because cement is readily available at reasonable cost in Thailand. From this study, it is found that the field roller-compacted strength, qufr is lower than the laboratory strength, qul under the same dry unit weight, soil-water/cement ratio and curing time due to several field factors. The ratio qufr/qul varies from 50 to 100%. Non-uniformity in mixing soil with cement is realized by the ratio of field hand-compacted strength to laboratory strength, qufh/q …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Settlements remain the major concern during the construction and along the life of a roadway embankment built over soft soils. A foundation ground reinforced by a system of rigid piles is an effective solution; it reduces and homogenizes the surface settlements. Rigid piles reinforcement system has been strongly developed in France for the last fifteen years, however, confrontations of several design used methods highlighted important variations in results. This results in implementing a French National Research Project A.S.I.RI. (Grounds Improvement by Rigid Inclusions) gathering construction companies, engineering and design departments, universities and research centers. This project aims to propose guidelines …
