Probable Maximum Flood Estimation In Northern Utah, Khin Maung Win May 1993

Probable Maximum Flood Estimation In Northern Utah, Khin Maung Win

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The probable maximum flood (PMF) is used for the xxi assessment of maximum flood potentials in spillway sizing of new dams and in evaluating the adequacy of existing hydrologic structures. Determination of the PMF begins with the estimation of the probable maximum precipitation (PMP) for a particular dam site. Selecting hydrologic methods and assumptions for converting PMP to PMF, which are most appropriate for Utah conditions, is important to meet current inflow design flood (IDF) safety standards.

The objectives of this study were (a) to demonstrate a maximization approach to PMF determination, (b) to evaluate effects of basin characteristics and …

Jet Velocity Dissipation And Modelling With Aeration, Stephen J. Schlenker May 1993

Jet Velocity Dissipation And Modelling With Aeration, Stephen J. Schlenker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effects of natural aeration and fall height upon velocity dissipation and modelling were studied. Underwater velocities and void ratios (proportion of air volume to total volume) were measured along the jet centerline at various depths in the receiving pool under 1- and 2-inch diameter vertical circular free-falling jets. Maximum air bubble penetration depths were also measured. In the tests, the nozzle velocities were designed so that the two differently sized models would have equivalent Froude numbers for direct comparison of respective underwater parameters. Air entrainment-the natural development of air bubbles within a pool receiving a free-falling jet-causes voids to …

A Mechanistic Approach To Modeling Habitat Needs Of Drift-Feeding Salmonids, R. Craig Addley May 1993

A Mechanistic Approach To Modeling Habitat Needs Of Drift-Feeding Salmonids, R. Craig Addley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A mechanistic model is developed to determine the habitat needs of drift-feeding stream salmonids from the direct cause-and-effect relationships of environmental and physiological variables on net energy intake (NEI). The model determines NEI by subtracting energy costs (basal metabolism, swimming cost, digestion cost) and losses (egestion and excretion) from the gross energy intake obtained as a result of simulated prey capture. The prey capture portion of the model utilizes components of the predation model of C.S. Holling and the prey capture model of N.F. Hughes and L.M. Dill to determine the rate of prey capture (gross energy intake) as a …

Coldwater Lake is a new lake formed when a massive mudflow down the Toutle River Valley, caused by the eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980, blocked the natural outlet of Coldwater Creek. This research utilizes physical, biological and chemical data collected at Coldwater Lake during the sun1mers of 1989 and 1990 to calibrate and verify the one-dimensional computer models CE-THERMRl and CE-QUAL-Rl for Coldwater Lake. CE-THERM-R1 was used to simulate thermal characteristics in Coldwater Lake during the summer stratification periods of 1989 and 1990. The model was calibrated to 1989 data and was verified with 1990 data. …

Evaluation Of Us Seismic Code Provisions For Asymmetric-Plan Systems, Rakesh K. Goel, Anil K. Chopra Apr 1993

Evaluation Of Us Seismic Code Provisions For Asymmetric-Plan Systems, Rakesh K. Goel, Anil K. Chopra

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The effects of plan asymmetry on the earthquake response of code-designed, one-story systems are identified with the objective of evaluating how well these effects are represented by torsional provisions in US building codes. The earthquake-induced deformations and ductility demands on resisting elements of asymmetric-plan systems, are compared with their values if the system plan were symmetric. The presented results demonstrate that the design eccentricity in US building codes should be modified in order to achieve the desirable goal of similar ductility demands on asymmetric-plan and symmetric-plan systems. The design eccentricity should be defined differently depending on the design value of …

Statistical Variations In Beach Parameter Change Rates For Walled And Non-Walled Profiles At Sandbridge, Virginia, Douglas Allen Bellomo Apr 1993

Statistical Variations In Beach Parameter Change Rates For Walled And Non-Walled Profiles At Sandbridge, Virginia, Douglas Allen Bellomo

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The interaction of seawalls {bulkheads) and beaches is a highly controversial subject today. In many locations all over the United States, seawalls have been both praised and ridiculed. It is well documented that Sandbridge, Virginia is, and has been, experiencing shoreline recession. Many believe however, that the recent construction of the seawalls has worsened this existing situation.

Fortunately, historical maps, and beach profiles are available to help determine if this is truly the case. The following defines several visible beach parameters, and describes how these parameters were calculated from two different data sources. Several methods and statistical techniques are then …

Elasto-Plastic Analysis Of Buried Pipelines Subjected To The Large Fault Movement, Luo-Jia Wang Apr 1993

Elasto-Plastic Analysis Of Buried Pipelines Subjected To The Large Fault Movement, Luo-Jia Wang

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The responses of buried pipelines subjected to a large fault movement are examined based upon a new non-linear cantilever beam analogy. This analogy assumes that the pipeline in the large deformation zone behaves like a cantilever beam subjected to a transversely concentrated shear at the inflection point and a uniformly distributed soil pressure along the entire span. Tangent modulus approach is adopted to analyze the coupled axial force-bending moment interaction effect on pipeline deformation in the inelastic range. Parametric studies of both tensile and compressive responses of buried pipeline to various fault movements, crossing angles, buried depths, pipe diameters and …

Assessment Of 1991 Nehrp Provisions For Nonstructural Components And Recommended Revisions, Tsuteh Soong, Genda Chen, Z. Wu, R. H. Zhang, M. Grigoriu Mar 1993

Assessment Of 1991 Nehrp Provisions For Nonstructural Components And Recommended Revisions, Tsuteh Soong, Genda Chen, Z. Wu, R. H. Zhang, M. Grigoriu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

As one part of the 1994 update effort of the 1991 NEHRP provisions, the seismic design force formulas for nonstructural components as they exist in the 1991 provisions are critically assessed and some of their shortcomings are identified. Various levels of improvements to these formulas are then presented which, on the one hand, preserve the equivalent lateral force format for design applicability and, on the other, correct some of the deficiencies on the basis of analyses, experimental results and observation data from past earthquakes.

Based on different interpretations of the component seismic coefficients as well as different degrees of simplicity …

Evaluation Of Diamond Grade Reflective Sheeting, Kenneth R. Agent Mar 1993

Evaluation Of Diamond Grade Reflective Sheeting, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objective of this project was to monitor the performance of the diamond grade sheeting when used on both typical traffic signs and construction signs. The durability, appearance, and reflectivity of the signs were monitored. Diamond grade sheetings used on typical traffic signs were evaluated over a two-year period with construction signs evaluated over an 18-month period.

Diamond grade sheeting was found to provide increased reflectivity compared to high intensity sheeting with no problems noted related to durability or appearance. However, the cost of the diamond grade sheeting would limit its use to situations where brighter, wider-angle reflective sheeting is …

Enhancements To Procedure For Estimating Esals, John A. Deacon, Jerry G. Pigman, Neil Tollner, David Cain Feb 1993

Enhancements To Procedure For Estimating Esals, John A. Deacon, Jerry G. Pigman, Neil Tollner, David Cain

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Kentucky's current procedure for estimating equivalent single axle loads (ESALs) was updated in 1990 to incorporate traffic data categorized by functional class rather than by statewide averages. This change resulted from the influx of data generated by automatic equipment used to classify and weigh vehicles in motion. A much wider range of geographic conditions and road conditions was sampled, and the expectation was that the data used in the estimation procedure would be more accurate as a result.

The 1990 revisions were quite extensive, and, although model calibrations using 1989 and 1990 data have proven useful, the Division of Planning …

Installation And Performance Of Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Joint Sealers, David Q. Hunsucker, Edgar E. Courtney, Michael D. Stone Feb 1993

Installation And Performance Of Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Joint Sealers, David Q. Hunsucker, Edgar E. Courtney, Michael D. Stone

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Joints are needed in portland cement concrete pavements to control cracking, relieve pavement stresses due to volume change, and to protect immovable structures. However, when the joints are not properly designed, constructed, and maintained, they may become a source of multiple problems. It is the opinion of many pavement management engineers that the most effective way to prevent and/or correct problems with joints is to use a joint sealer material. The purpose of the sealer is to keep surface water and fine, incompressible material from entering the pavement joint.

The Kentucky Transportation Center was contracted by the Kentucky Department of …

The Permeability Of Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete With Petroleum Contaminated Soils, Kuen-Yuan Chuang Jan 1993

The Permeability Of Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete With Petroleum Contaminated Soils, Kuen-Yuan Chuang

Theses

It is estimated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) that there are 2 to 3.5 million underground storage tanks (USTs) throughout the nation and about 25% of these tanks are leaking. The leakage of petroleum or other organic material presents serious environmental problem due to the uncontrolled release of petroleum products to ground water. Many new techniques have developed to reuse these petroleum contaminated soils generated from sites containing leaking USTs. One such soil reuse method available since 1985 is the use of petroleum contaminated soils in the production of hot mix asphalt.

The stability, durability, and hydraulic …

A Planning Model For Intermodal Auto-Rail Transportation Assignment, Daniel Disario Jan 1993

A Planning Model For Intermodal Auto-Rail Transportation Assignment, Daniel Disario

Theses

This thesis presents a planning model for assigning trips in a corridor served by highways and commuter rail. The underlying assumption is that commuters will choose a mode (or a combination of modes) connecting the origin and destination in a way that will either minimize their individual travel times and costs (the user equilibrium principle) or minimize total system travel time and cost (system optimal principle). The model is structured as a mathematical program with a non-linear objective function and linear constraints.

The model was applied to a case study of the Raritan Valley Corridor located in Northern New Jersey. …

Evaluation Of Truck Restrictions Using Simulation, Shaikh Mohamed Arif Jan 1993

Evaluation Of Truck Restrictions Using Simulation, Shaikh Mohamed Arif

Theses

Traffic congestion is a major problem in many central business districts. Many strategies have been proposed and implemented to solve or alleviate this problem. One of the most common strategies is to impose travel restrictions on the movement of trucks, without reviewing the economic consequences of goods movement restrictions on shippers, customers and on the overall business activity of the area.

This research examines the effect of various truck restrictive policies on the cost of urban goods movement, using the central business district of Manhattan as a case study. Computer simulation techniques are used to evaluate several scenarios under different …

Behavior Of R/C Columns Under Nonproportional Variations In Axial And Lateral Loads, Kaniz Fatema Ahsan Jan 1993

Behavior Of R/C Columns Under Nonproportional Variations In Axial And Lateral Loads, Kaniz Fatema Ahsan

Theses

The study on the behavior of reinforced concrete columns subjected to the motion of earthquake suggests that the structure may experience nonproportional variations in axial and lateral forces. In order to assess the capacity of a reinforced concrete structure under nonproportional loadings, an analytical model is developed using the fiber modeling technique.

The method is based on detailed analytical description of the geometry and material properties used in evaluating the behavior of the critical regions rather than a simplified and predefined set of hysteresis rules. The present study has two principal components of investigation. First, the analyses are done at …

Development Of A Composite User Equilibrium And System Optimization Assignment Model, Kimberly M. Stump Jan 1993

Development Of A Composite User Equilibrium And System Optimization Assignment Model, Kimberly M. Stump

Theses

The Urban Transportation Modeling System (UTMS) is a set of procedures used by transportation planners to predict the volume of traffic that will flow through a network, and how the traffic is routed. This paper will focus on the final component of UTMS, traffic assignment, which assigns the traffic flows to actual routes in the network.

In this paper, two composite models which model both User Equilibrium and System Optimal assignments are presented. The composite models are solved using the GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System) software, a powerful mathematical programming tool. The first model was based on Beckman's Formulation, (Beckman, …

In-Plane/Out-Of-Plane Dynamic Racking Tests Of Curtain Wall Glass Elements, James H. Culp Jan 1993

In-Plane/Out-Of-Plane Dynamic Racking Tests Of Curtain Wall Glass Elements, James H. Culp

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

This report describes a research project that was conducted to examine architectural glass behavior as curtain wall components subjected to earthquake-like dynamic motions. The project was an extension of an earlier pilot study conducted in 1991. The 1991 pilot study dealt only with dynamic racking of the curtain wall in its own plane.

The focus of this study was to investigate the effects of adding out-of-plane motions to the previous in-plane motions and to observe the resulting structural performance of various types of architectural glass. Thus, the curtain wall specimens in the current study were racked with motion components both …

Route Fatality Risk As A Measure Of Travel Death Risk, Kopl Halperin, Jim Redman Jan 1993

Route Fatality Risk As A Measure Of Travel Death Risk, Kopl Halperin, Jim Redman

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

The authors examine the route fatality Risk of routes in Erie County, PA and show that some pose a disproportionately high-Risk to users. They argue that transportation safety could be greatly increased by relatively small expenditures and suggest that the most cost-effective Risk amelioration is speed limit control.

Simulation De L'Interaction Entre Le Voilement Local Et Les Modes Globaux D'Instabilite Des Profils A Froid Par Une Combinaison De La Methode Des Largeurs Effectives Et De L'Element Fini Non-Lineaire De Poutre Spatiale, Luiz Felippe Estrella Jr. Jan 1993

Simulation De L'Interaction Entre Le Voilement Local Et Les Modes Globaux D'Instabilite Des Profils A Froid Par Une Combinaison De La Methode Des Largeurs Effectives Et De L'Element Fini Non-Lineaire De Poutre Spatiale, Luiz Felippe Estrella Jr.

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

The objective of this thesis is the study of the stability of cold-formed thin-walled steel members. The interaction between global instability and local buckling of the profile walls has a reducing effect on the collapse load. The aim is to develop a numerical tool able to predict not only the collapse load, but also the equilibrium path. With this aim in view, the non-linear spatial beam tinite element recently developed by Vincent de Ville in Liege University was chosen for this purpose. The steel member is considered as an association of flat plates and corners. Local buckling is modeled by …
