Consumption And Loss Of Formaldehyde In Electroless Copper Plating, Peter John F. Sutch Jan 1993

Consumption And Loss Of Formaldehyde In Electroless Copper Plating, Peter John F. Sutch

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this research were to quantify formaldehyde consumption due to plating and parasitic reactions and determine the magnitude and distribution of formaldehyde losses from the electroless copper plating process. Plating and rinse bath samples obtained from three electroless copper plating operations were analyzed for formaldehyde and copper in order to develop a mass balance analysis about the plating bath for periods of active production and no production. Fugitive air and stack releases of formaldehyde were estimated using emission factors developed from air sampling at the three facilities. It was determined that approximately 90% of the formaldehyde added to …

Simplified Strength Prediction For Cold-Formed C- And Z-Shapes, Roger A. Laboube Jan 1993

Simplified Strength Prediction For Cold-Formed C- And Z-Shapes, Roger A. Laboube

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Although cold-formed steel C- and Z-shaped members possess a very favorable strength-to-weight ratio, are easily fabricated and erected, and offer a cost-effective structural design solution, they can be highly susceptible to local buckling. To adequately address the impact of the local buckling limit state, a complex, time-consuming design office effort may be required. Therefore, to facilitate the design of such shapes, a study was conducted that focused on developing relatively simple, easy-to-apply design guidelines. The design guidelines address the behavior of cold-formed steel C- and Z-shaped members when used as either a flexural member or a compression member. Both edge-stiffened …

Multiobjective Design Of Service Routes, J. R. Wright, Jin-Yuan Wang Jan 1993

Multiobjective Design Of Service Routes, J. R. Wright, Jin-Yuan Wang

JTRP Technical Reports

The purpose of this research has been the design of a computer-based decision support system for use in the design of service routes on the Indiana intrastate highway system. The following work has been completed for this purpose:

1) Acquisition of a 1:100,000 scale DLG data representation of the entire state transportation network.

2) Reclassification of those data with the aid of a computer-based interactive data filter and participation by DOT maintenance personnel from 6 districts.

3) Development of several route design algorithm components designed specifically for addressing the problem of routing snow and ice control vehicles for INDOT.

4) …

Roller Compacted Concrete As A New Method For Building Dams And Its Economic Advantages, Sami Tannous Jan 1993

Roller Compacted Concrete As A New Method For Building Dams And Its Economic Advantages, Sami Tannous

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

This document includes overviews of the planning and design processes, reviews of construction operations, evaluations of the behavior, and performance of completed dams. Included in this document are examples of roller-compacted concrete dam construction in the U.S., South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. This document also provides information on the development of roller compacted concrete (RCC) to support the use of RCC in dam construction. This procedure offers rapid construction with a lower cost, compared with the traditional concrete practice, and challenges the economics of earthfill and rockfill embankment dams.

Candi (Chemical And Irrigation Management) Users Manual, Vs 2.0., A. H. Aly, Richard C. Peralta

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This manual describes an interactive computer model, CANOl. CANOl is a decision support tool designed to aid in on-farm pesticides and irrigation management. CANOl simulates downward chemical movement through the soil in response to different irrigation practices. CANOl estimates the relative amount of a non-polar organic chemical which remains in the soil profile by the time it reaches a specified depth. Future releases of CANOl will involve the management of different types of chemicals. CANOl is also able to delineate the wellhead protection areas for domestic wells. For this purpose, CANOl involves USEPA's model (MWCAP). Different versions of CANOl handle …

Best Management Of Pesticide And Irrigation Application Systems: Background And Candi Software, Alaa H. Aly, Richard C. Peralta, Howard M. Deer Jan 1993

Best Management Of Pesticide And Irrigation Application Systems: Background And Candi Software, Alaa H. Aly, Richard C. Peralta, Howard M. Deer

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

In this chapter, we discuss a commonly-used volume balance approach for simulating the movement of water through the root zone. We then show how this approach can be coupled with pesticide leaching prediction. Finally we show how information about irrigation system design can be used with the previous processes. The result is an integrated approach for estimating the environmental consequences of irrigation and pesticide management.

Construction And Performance Of Highway Soil Subgrades Modified With Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Combustion Residue And Multicone Kiln Dust, David Q. Hunsucker, Tommy C. Hopkins, Tony L. Beckham, R. Clark Graves Jan 1993

Construction And Performance Of Highway Soil Subgrades Modified With Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Combustion Residue And Multicone Kiln Dust, David Q. Hunsucker, Tommy C. Hopkins, Tony L. Beckham, R. Clark Graves

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In an effort to increase the utilization of by-product materials in highway construction projects, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet authorized the experimental use of reside from an atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) process and multicone kiln dust (MKD), a by-product resulting from the production of lime, as subgrade soil modifiers. This report presents information relative to preconstruction and post-construction laboratory evaluations, construction procedures, construction monitoring activities, and performance evaluations of a highway subgrade solid modified using AFBC spent lime, MKD, Type IP cement, and hydrated lime. An untreated section served as a control section for the project located on Kentucky Route …
