The Lesser Known Side Of Highway Safety, Rick Drumm
The Lesser Known Side Of Highway Safety, Rick Drumm
Purdue Road School
Most highway professionals are aware of the main concepts of highway safety. But there are many other concepts, odd statistics, and unique countermeasures that are not well publicized and that we might consider brilliant—or silly. As a host of ideas are presented, you will be challenged to consider how to improve highway safety on your roads, and maybe share some of your own ideas.

Good Safety Program: Straight Ahead, Rick Drumm
Purdue Road School
AASHTO and FHWA conducted a joint scan tour in the fall of 2015 to document what makes a good safety program. A wealth of information on safety programs was pulled together in one effort and coalesced in one document. Topics to be presented that were discussed on this seven-state tour include data collection/analysis, funding, systemic safety improvements, types of projects and initiatives, project development and delivery, cooperation with safety partners, and measuring safety.

Rain Gardens for Roads: Installation & Maintenance Tips—Rain gardens and bio-swales provide an effective means of addressing water quality and quantity issues along roadways, if properly designed and installed. If not properly installed, they can create flooding, unsafe driving conditions, and ugly eyesores. We will examine how to successfully incorporate rain gardens into roadways, including design and long-term maintenance considerations, and present lessons learned from construction and upkeep of rain gardens in municipal installations.

Pipe Express®, Purdue Ect Team
Pipe Express®, Purdue Ect Team
ECT Fact Sheets Archive
By developing Pipe Express® Herrenknecht AG has set new standards for installing pipelines. With this system, no groundwater lowering is necessary and, in comparison with the open construction method, routes can be considerably narrower. This has a positive effect on construction costs. Because it is highly ecological and cost-efficient procedure, the development of this new system is being subsidized by the German Environment Ministry.
The Pipe Express® technology combines the advantages of trenchless installations and open-cut solutions. Pipe Express® can be used in any kind of soft to medium formations. However, the technology exhibits its major benefits …

Spatial Variations Of The Methanogenic Communities In The Sediments Of Tropical Mangroves, Hongmei Jing, Shunyan Cheung, Zhi Zhou, Chen Wu, Sanjay Nagarajan, Hongbin Liu
The School of Sustainability Engineering and Environmental Engineering (SEE) Faculty Publications
Methane production by methanogens in mangrove sediments is known to contribute significantly to global warming, but studies on the shift of methanogenic community in response to anthropogenic contaminations were still limited. In this study, the effect of anthropogenic activities in the mangrove sediments along the north and south coastlines of Singapore were investigated by pyrosequencing of the mcrA gene. Our results showed that hydrogenotrophic, acetoclastic and methylotrophic methanogens coexist in the sediments. The predominance of the methylotrophic Methanosarcinales reflects the potential for high methane production as well as the possible availability of low acetate and high methylated C-1 compounds as …

Vertical Icf Wall System, Purdue Ect Team
Vertical Icf Wall System, Purdue Ect Team
ECT Fact Sheets Archive
Traditional ICF systems’ installation is tedious and labor intensive resulting in out of level, bowing, and snaking walls with a significant amount of bracing adding to the cost. ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) walls are a form of structural walls used for construction. Hobbs Vertical ICF system uses less concrete, more recycled material and requires less labor for construction. The furring assemblies and retainer clips of the Hobbs VICF system are made from 100% recycled post-industrial waste.
