Analysis Of Bolted Rock By Computer Modeling, Niann-Chyun Wang
Analysis Of Bolted Rock By Computer Modeling, Niann-Chyun Wang
Theses
A computer model-based on VAX-ANSYS system was developed to model the behavior of multi-layer rock systems reinforced by pretensioned rock bolts. Three models were utilized for this study. The third model represents the friction between interlayers occuring due to the tensioned rock-bolts. Results obtained from this study compare favorably with those obtained from equations developed from model studies. An attempt has been made to study the effects of creep on the behavior of the rock-layer system.

Review Of Construction Management Procedures Of New Jersey Department Of Transportation With The Objective Of Minimizing Claims, Suresh Kumar Ceyyur
Review Of Construction Management Procedures Of New Jersey Department Of Transportation With The Objective Of Minimizing Claims, Suresh Kumar Ceyyur
Theses
Recent years have evidenced a growing spate of construction claims being filed against NJDOT. A mail survey was conducted and problem areas of NJDOT construction management procedures frequently contributing to claims have been identified. NJDOT's pre-construction scheduling system has been reviewed to suggest improvements and practical integration to obtain effective feedback. NJDOT's organizational structure has many administrative bottlenecks and is overly bureaucratic. An analysis reveals that by way of minimal revamping and by integrating design and construction divisions better coordination can be achieved, bureaucratic norms reduced and the structure made resilient to react quickly to claim situations. Sources and causes …
Behavior Of High Strength Irregular Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Compression, Gabriel Hannoush
Behavior Of High Strength Irregular Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Compression, Gabriel Hannoush
Theses
Other than rectangular and circular shapes, channel and L-shaped reinforced concrete columns are a common design problem for engineers. Since the available design aids and the current code provisions do not provide adequate guidelines for evaluating the ductility and strength of biaxially-loaded reinforced concrete columns, an experimental and analytical investigation and study of the behavior of biaxially-loaded channel and L-shaped short columns was undertaken.
Four one-quarter scale specimens, two specimens for L-shaped and channel shaped columns respectively, were casted, cured and tested till failure.
Moment, curvature and load deflection curves developed from the experiment were compared with the results obtained …

Development Of Dynamic Testing Machine For Laboratory Modeling Of The Rock Fracturing Phenomenon, Mohammad Ali Moghaddass Zadeh Kermani
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to develop a dynamic testing machine for laboratory modeling of the rock fracturing phenomenon. Bearing stratum fracturing is a construction difficulty which occurs when end-bearing piles are driven to weak rock or weathered sound rock. It is a pile group effect and can result in significantly less pile carrying capacity than the final driving resistance would normally indicate.
A linear scaling factor was derived to establish similitude between the laboratory apparatus and field conditions. This scaling factor is approximate and was used for overall sizing of the apparatus and its components. A more exact …

Contaminant Transport Against A Slowly Moving Fluid : An Experimental Investigation, Surya Man Shakya
Contaminant Transport Against A Slowly Moving Fluid : An Experimental Investigation, Surya Man Shakya
Theses
Leachate migration into groundwater from leaking lagoons, hazardous waste sites, solid waste disposal sites, etc. has recently become a major cause of groundwater pollution. A possible solution to prevent leachate migration into groundwater is to create a negative hydraulic gradient toward the site. This can be achieved by installing two parallel slurry trench cut-offs around the perimeter of a leaking lagoon and by filling it with water. The water und-er the influence of positive hydraulic gradient will move toward the site and will finally find its way on the surface of the lagoon. Along with the flow of water, the …

Correlation Of Dissolved Oxygen With Flowrate And Water Temperature In The Passaic River Basin, Shan-Pei Fanchiang
Theses
Passaic River water is utilized by a number of major water purveyors in New Jersey. They are the North Jersey Water Supply District Commission, the city of Jersey City, the city of Newark, the Commonwealth Water Company, and the Passaic Valley Water Commission (i.e. PVWC).
Since all are interrelated in that the demands and releases of each affect the other, there is an interest in insuring sufficient water to maintain adequate water quality for the last user on the line (i.e. PVWC) who draws water close to Little Falls.
Having daily data of flowrate, water temperature and dissolved oxygen in …
The Effects Of Pressure On The Kinetics And Mechanisms Of The Bod Reaction, Peter Sereico
The Effects Of Pressure On The Kinetics And Mechanisms Of The Bod Reaction, Peter Sereico
Dissertations
The research was concerned with the kinetics and mechanisms of BOD reduction due to pressurization. The initial investigations involved attempts to reproduce and interpret the results of previous investigators. Thereafter, actual wastewater samples were pressurized and changes in the wastewater characteristics were analyzed and recorded. Based on the findings, possible mechanisms for creating the changes noted were proposed.
To test the mechanisms considered, samples of pure compounds were prepared and pressurized. The results of this analysis eliminated all of the mechanisms but the actual one. The mechanism responsible for changes in BOD profile under pressure conditions is the hydrolysis of …

Behavior Of Tee-Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Subjected To Biaxial Bending And Axial Compression, Antoun Romanos Nader
Theses
The investigation deals with the effect of eccentric loading on the moment-curvature relationship of reinforced concrete tee columns.
The test program consisted of two series of tee-shaped reinforced concrete columns, loaded biaxially at constant angle from the principle axes. Their end conditions were assumed to be pinned-ended.
Loads, at constant rate, were gradually applied until failure. At each loading stage, measurements were made for the strains and deflections at the mid span section.
The experimental and theoretical results of the load- deformation and moment-curvature were compared and found that the analytical approach proposed by Hsu is applicable to irregular sections …

Behavior Of Thin-Walled Channel Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Compression, Subash Yalamarthy
Theses
Next to rectangular, circular and L shapes, Channel section may be the most frequently encountered reinforced concrete columns since they can be used as box wall for elevators. Nevertheless, information about the load deformation behavior is not generally available to structural engineers. Most of the investigations have been emphasized on the ultimate strength of column sections under combined biaxial bending and axial compression and the resulting interaction surface. No attention is paid to load deformation behavior.
Current code provisions do not provide adequate guidelines for assessing the strength and ductility of biaxially-loaded reinforced concrete columns. Therefore, this investigation is aimed …

Finite Element Analysis Of The Behavior Of Foundations Over Cavities In Soluble Rocks, Borhan Huang
Theses
Soluble rocks contain sinkhole that affect the strength of the rocks. In designing foundations in and on these formation, the effects of cavities have to be taken into account. In this study, an axisymmetric formulation has been developed to study the behavior of circular footings over spherical cavities. Parametric studies have been conducted varying the sizes and locations of openings. An approximate procedure has been employed to generate the stiffness matrix of the system. Error analysis and convergence study of the results have been performed.

Acrylamide Effects On Nerve Terminal Enzymes, Christopher S. E. Marlowe
Acrylamide Effects On Nerve Terminal Enzymes, Christopher S. E. Marlowe
Theses
Acrylamide causes a peripehral neuropathy. The biochemical mechanism by which it does so is the subject of intense investigation. One of the principal hypotheses for this mechanism centers on acrylamide's ability to inhibit glycolysis. This study examines the effects of in vivo exposure to acrylamide on the enzymes of the nerve terminal particle, the synaptosome.
A method for measuring glycolytic enzyme inhibition in the synaptosome was developed. Acrylamide (500 mg/kg) was administered to rats intraperitoneally. Synaptosomes were prepared by the method of Dodd et al, and lysed by sonication. GAPDH activity and NSE concentration were measured. GAPDH inhibition measured in …

Behavior Of Channel-Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Compression, Dureseti Chidambarrao
Behavior Of Channel-Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Compression, Dureseti Chidambarrao
Theses
The inelastic behavior of irregular shaped reinforced concrete columns has been a constant concern for a structural engineer, to design a safe and economic structure in modern buildings and bridge piers. The shape of the elements in a reinforced concrete structure may be used to optimize its structural strength, to make better use of the available space, to improve the aesthetic appearance of the structure, or to facilitate construction. Due to the locations of the columns, the shapes of the buildings and the nature of the applied loads, many columns are subject to combined biaxial bending and axial load.
Seven …
