Thermal Excitation And Piezoresistive Detection Of Cantilever In-Plane Resonance Modes For Sensing Applications, Luke A. Beardslee, Assim M. Addous, Stephen M. Heinrich, Fabien Josse, Isabelle Dufour, Oliver Brand

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Thermally excited and piezoresistively detected bulk-micromachined cantilevers vibrating in their in-plane flexural resonance mode are presented. By shearing the surrounding fluid rather than exerting normal stress on it, the in-plane mode cantilevers exhibit reduced added fluid mass effects and improved quality factors in a fluid environment. In this letter, different cantilever geometries with in-plane resonance frequencies from 50 kHz to 2.2 MHz have been tested, with quality factors as high as 4200 in air and 67 in water.

In-Situ Monitoring And Testing Of Ibrc Bridges In Wisconsin, Christopher Foley, Baolin Wan, Carl Schneeman, Kristine Barnes, Jordan Komp, Junshan Liu, Andrew Smith

Transportation Reports with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation

This study examines two highway bridges constructed using novel fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite stay-in-place formwork and an FRP grillage reinforcement system. Both bridge superstructures rely on the FRP components as bridge deck reinforcement. These bridges were monitored in-situ for a period of five years. The monitoring included a series of in-situ load test as well as non-destructive evaluation (NDE). Laboratory investigations accompanied and guided the load testing and NDE implemented. Finite element simulations were employed to evaluate the likely causes of premature deck cracking seen in the traditionally-constructed bridge and the FRP-component superstructures. The study identifies sources of potential deterioration, …

Resonant Microcantilevers Vibrating Laterally In Viscous Liquid Media, Russell Cox, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich, Isabelle Dufour, Oliver Brand Jun 2010

Resonant Microcantilevers Vibrating Laterally In Viscous Liquid Media, Russell Cox, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich, Isabelle Dufour, Oliver Brand

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The characteristics of microcantilevers vibrating in the in-plane flexural mode (also known as lateral vibration) in viscous liquid media are investigated. A numerical model was utilized to determine a correction to Stokes' solution for an infinite plate to obtain an analytical expression for the hydrodynamic forces acting on a laterally vibrating microcantilever as a function of both Reynolds number and aspect ratio (thickness over width). The results allowed for the resonant frequency and quality factor to be investigated as a function of both beam geometry and medium properties. Trends in these characteristics can be used to optimize device geometry and …

Perpetual Pavement Analysis For The Marquette Interchange Instrumentation Project, Nicholas James Hornyak Apr 2010

Perpetual Pavement Analysis For The Marquette Interchange Instrumentation Project, Nicholas James Hornyak

Dissertations (1934 -)

With the emergence of the mechanistic-empirical pavement design process, development of pavements rely on the structural response and fatigue characteristics of pavement materials due to traffic loads. In the past, pavement design has been almost entirely based on empirical data. One area of interest in designing hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavements is the fatigue life of the pavement, which has been shown to be dependent on the horizontal strain in the pavement.

This research is focused on measuring the structural response of a pavement located within the Marquette Interchange Project in order to analyze fatigue behavior with great detail. Virtually all …

A Visual Approach To Construction Cost Estimating, Phuwadol Samphaongoen Apr 2010

A Visual Approach To Construction Cost Estimating, Phuwadol Samphaongoen

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Construction cost estimating is considered one of the most important and critical phases of a construction project. Preparing reliable and accurate estimates to help decision makers is the most challenging assignment that estimators face. An estimate is not only necessary for proposal preparation but also for several project management functions. Despite the importance of estimating, it has remained a very time consuming process. The most inefficient part of construction cost estimating is determination of the amount of resources needed for the construction of a project. This is also known as quantity takeoff. Quantity takeoff is a very long and error-prone …

Real-Time Health Monitoring System For Mast-Arm Sign Support Structures, Andrew David Smith

Master's Theses (2009 -)

There has been an ongoing study conducted by Marquette University and supported by the Wisconsin Highway Research Program that is seeking to understand the risk of fatigue-induced fracture in the connections of mast-arm sign support structures. This study has been brought on by recent problems encountered with the connections contained in, and the in-service performance of, several cantilevered mast-arm sign support structures. A resulting recommendation of phase one in this effort was to monitoring an in-service cantilevered mast-arm sign support structure.

The health monitoring system developed in this thesis effort includes a grouping of strain gages (full-bridge arrangements) positioned around …

Simulation Of Scenarios To Meet Dissolved Oxygen Standards In The Chicago Waterway System, Yaping Ao Apr 2010

Simulation Of Scenarios To Meet Dissolved Oxygen Standards In The Chicago Waterway System, Yaping Ao

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Although most reaches of the Chicago Waterway System (CWS) meet the General Use Water Quality Standards a high percentage of the time, dissolved oxygen (DO) standards are not met in the CWS during some periods for both the WYs 2001 and 2003 as representative of wet and dry years. Several methods were used to solve this problem; however, they were inadequate for achieving the proposed DO standards. Therefore, a method of integrating the alternative DO remediation methods into one integrated strategy for improving water quality is considered in this study.

The main purpose of this study is the application of …

Concrete Cracking In New Bridge Decks And Overlays, Baolin Wan, Christopher Foley, Jordan Komp Mar 2010

Concrete Cracking In New Bridge Decks And Overlays, Baolin Wan, Christopher Foley, Jordan Komp

Transportation Reports with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation

There appears to be a trend for new bridge decks in the state of Wisconsin to develop early-age transverse cracks and map cracks on concrete overlays. A comprehensive literature review of the potential causes of concrete bridge deck cracking is provided. Fifteen bridge structures found in the recently completed Marquette Interchange were analyzed using 21 variables thought to cause early-age bridge deck cracking. Visual inspection of sixteen bridges in Milwaukee is described. The inspections show that the continuous superstructures have more cracks than the simply-supported bridges. A finite element model was created for a typical two-span continuous superstructure with HL-93 …

Analyzing Motorists’ Responses To Temporary Signage In Highway Work Zones, Yong Bai, Kris Finger, Yue Li

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

For decades, the importance of highway work zone safety has increased considerably with the continual increase in the number of highway work zones present on highways for repairs and expansion. Rural work zones on two-lane highways are particularly hazardous and cause a significant safety concern due to the disruption of regular traffic flow. In this study, researchers determined motorists’ responses to warning signs in rural, two-lane highway work zones. The researchers divided vehicles into three classes (passenger car, truck, and semitrailer) and compared the mean change in speed of these classes based on three different sign setups: portable changeable message …

To properly remediate, improve, or predict how hydrological systems behave, it is vital to establish their histories. However, modern-style records, assembled from instrumental data and remote sensing platforms, hardly exist back more than a few decades. As centuries of data is preferable given multidecadal fluxes of both meteorology/climatology and demographics, building such a history requires resources traditionally considered only useful in the social sciences and humanities. In this Feature, Pastore et al. discuss how they have undertaken the synthesis of historical records and modern techniques to understand the hydrology of the Northeastern U.S. from Colonial times to modern day. Such …

Unconventional Uses Of Cantilevers For Chemical Sensing In Gas And Liquid Environments, Isabelle Dufour, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich, C. Lucat, C. Ayela, F. Ménil, Oliver Brand

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Microcantilevers used as (bio)chemical sensors are usually coated with a chemically sensitive layer. The coated devices operate either in a static bending regime or in a dynamic flexural mode. While the coated devices operate generally well in both the static and dynamic mode, they do suffer from certain shortcomings depending on the medium of operation and the application, including lack of selectivity and of reversibility of the sensitive coating and a reduced quality factor due to the surrounding medium. In particular, the performance of microcantilevers excited in their standard out-of-plane dynamic mode drastically decreases in viscous liquid media. Moreover, the …

Highway Work Zone Risk Factors And Their Impact On Crash Severity, Yingfeng Li, Yong Bai Oct 2009

Highway Work Zone Risk Factors And Their Impact On Crash Severity, Yingfeng Li, Yong Bai

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Numerous factors may contribute to high-severity crashes in highway work zones. Identifying these factors and then alleviating their impact is a challenging task that traffic engineers and researchers have to confront. In this study, the work zone risk factors that could increase the probability of causing fatalities when severe crashes occur were examined using a comprehensive approach. The researchers first identified the significant risk factors based on a screening process that incorporates both statistical analyses and empirical research findings. They then systematically investigated these factors using logistic regression and frequency analysis techniques. The severe crashes including the fatal crashes between …

A Comparison Of Pilot-Scale Photocatalysis And Enhanced Coagulation For Disinfection Byproduct Mitigation, Daniel Gerrity, Brooke K. Mayer, Hodon Ryu, John Crittenden, Morteza Abbaszadegan

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This study evaluated pilot-scale photocatalysis and enhanced coagulation for their ability to remove or destroy disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors, trihalomethane (THM) formation potential (FP), and THMs in two Arizona surface waters. Limited photocatalysis (/m3) achieved reductions in most of the DBP precursor parameters (e.g., DOC, UV254, and bromide) but led to increased chlorine demand and THMFP. In contrast, enhanced coagulation achieved reductions in the DBP precursors and THMFP. Extended photocatalysis (/m3) decreased THMFP once the energy consumption exceeded 20 kWh/m3. The photocatalytic energy requirements for THM destruction were considerably lower (EEO = …

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Sound project management is an important pillar of success for a construction company. Project schedules are the primary tools for communicating the thinking and planning by the management team to all the stakeholders in a construction project. Traditional project scheduling software have become an indispensable tool for managers in various project oriented industries for tracking the schedule, the budget and resource requirements of a project as well as for preparing reports, providing on-line access to project information and communication with the members of the project team. However, these benefits are realized only after the project information is entered into the …

Deflection Of A Viscoelastic Cantilever Under A Uniform Surface Stress: Applications To Static-Mode Microcantilever Sensors Undergoing Adsorption, Michael J. Wenzel, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich Jan 2009

Deflection Of A Viscoelastic Cantilever Under A Uniform Surface Stress: Applications To Static-Mode Microcantilever Sensors Undergoing Adsorption, Michael J. Wenzel, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The equation governing the curvature of a viscoelastic microcantilever beam loaded with a uniform surface stress is derived. The present model is applicable to static-mode microcantilever sensors made with a rigid polymer, such as SU-8. An analytical solution to the differential equation governing the curvature is given for a specific surface stress representing adsorption of analyte onto the viscoelastic beam’s surface. The solution for the bending of the microcantilever shows that, in many cases, the use of Stoney’s equation to analyze stress-induced deflection of viscoelastic microcantilevers (in the present case due to surface analyte adsorption) can lead to poor predictions …

An Analytical Model For Transient Deformation Of Viscoelastically Coated Beams: Applications To Static-Mode Microcantilever Chemical Sensors, Stephen M. Heinrich, Michael J. Wenzel, Fabien Josse, Isabelle Dufour

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The problem governing the transient deformation of an elastic cantilever beam with viscoelastic coating, subjected to a time-dependent coating eigenstrain, is mathematically formulated. An analytical solution for an exponential eigenstrain history, exact within the context of beam theory, is obtained in terms of the coating and base layer thicknesses, the elastic modulus of the base material, the initial coating modulus, the coating relaxation percentage (0%–100%), and the time constants of the coating’s relaxation process and its eigenstrain history. Approximate formulas, valid for thin coatings, are derived as special cases to provide insight into system behavior. Main results include (1) the …

Materials Characterization And Analysis Of The Marquette Interchange Hma Perpetual Pavement, James Crovetti, Hani Titi, Aaron Coenen, Mohammed Elias, R. Christopher Williams, Xinjun Li

Transportation Research Center: Marquette Interchange Instrumentation

This project focused on the characterization of materials used to construct the Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) perpetual pavement within the Marquette Interchange and on the analysis of collected pavement response data to investigate the interactions between materials, environment, and traffic loadings. While these pavements are designed for a service life in excess of 50 years, to date there is insufficient field data to confirm this performance expectation. To help bridge this knowledge gap, this study included a mechanistic-empirical appraisal of the HMA perpetual pavement to provide predictions of key performance indicators over a fifty year service period. Laboratory testing was …

Generalized Model Of Resonant Polymer-Coated Microcantilevers In Viscous Liquid Media, Russell Cox, Fabien Josse, Michael J. Wenzel, Stephen M. Heinrich, Isabelle Dufour Aug 2008

Generalized Model Of Resonant Polymer-Coated Microcantilevers In Viscous Liquid Media, Russell Cox, Fabien Josse, Michael J. Wenzel, Stephen M. Heinrich, Isabelle Dufour

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Expressions describing the resonant frequency and quality factor of a dynamically driven, polymer-coated microcantilever in a viscous liquid medium have been obtained. These generalized formulas are used to describe the effects the operational medium and the viscoelastic coating have on the device sensitivity when used in liquid-phase chemical sensing applications. Shifts in the resonant frequency are normally assumed proportional to the mass of sorbed analyte in the sensing layer. However, the expression for the frequency shift derived in this work indicates that the frequency shift is also dependent on changes in the sensing layer’s loss and storage moduli, changes in …

Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Over Rubblized Pcc, James Crovetti Mar 2008

Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Over Rubblized Pcc, James Crovetti

Transportation Reports with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation

This report has presented findings of research conducted to determine the viability of constructing Portland cement concrete pavements over rubblized PCC. Rubblization of aged PCC pavements is a common technique for in-place recycling of these pavements. For the vast majority of applications, the rubblized PCC layer is surfaced with hot mix asphalt (HMA). The use of Portland cement concrete as a surfacing material offers designers another option which may provide good performance and be cost-effective under certain conditions.

The current concrete pavement design procedures utilized by WisDOT allow for the incorporation of a rubblized PCC base layer and an increase …

Sorption-Induced Static Bending Of Microcantilevers Coated With Viscoelastic Material, Michael J. Wenzel, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich, Edwin E. Yaz, P. G. Datskos Jan 2008

Sorption-Induced Static Bending Of Microcantilevers Coated With Viscoelastic Material, Michael J. Wenzel, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich, Edwin E. Yaz, P. G. Datskos

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Absorption of a chemical analyte into a polymercoating results in an expansion governed by the concentration and type of analyte that has diffused into the bulk of the coating. When the coating is attached to a microcantilever, this expansion results in bending of the device. Assuming that absorption (i.e., diffusion across the surface barrier into the bulk of the coating) is Fickian, with a rate of absorption that is proportional to the difference between the absorbed concentration and the equilibrium concentration, and the coating is elastic, the bending response of the coated device should exhibit a first-order behavior. However, for …

Analysis Of Resonating Microcantilevers Operating In A Viscous Liquid Environment, Cyril Vančura, Isabelle Dufour, Stephen M. Heinrich, Fabien Josse, Andreas Hierlemann Jan 2008

Analysis Of Resonating Microcantilevers Operating In A Viscous Liquid Environment, Cyril Vančura, Isabelle Dufour, Stephen M. Heinrich, Fabien Josse, Andreas Hierlemann

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The characteristics of resonant cantilevers in viscous liquids are analyzed. Various rectangular cantilevers geometries are studied in pure water, glycerol and ethanol solutions of different concentrations, and the results are described in terms of the added displaced liquid mass and the liquid damping force for both, the resonance frequency and the quality factor (Q-factor). Experimental results using a set of magnetically actuated resonant cantilevers vibrating in the out-of-plane (“weak-axis bending”) mode are presented and compared to theoretical calculations. The importance of the study is in the use of resonant cantilevers as biochemical sensors in liquid environments.

Rapid Detection Of Analytes With Improved Selectivity Using Coated Microcantilever Chemical Sensors And Estimation Theory, Michael J. Wenzel, Fabien Josse Phd, Edwin E. Yaz, Stephen M. Heinrich, P. G. Datskos Oct 2007

Rapid Detection Of Analytes With Improved Selectivity Using Coated Microcantilever Chemical Sensors And Estimation Theory, Michael J. Wenzel, Fabien Josse Phd, Edwin E. Yaz, Stephen M. Heinrich, P. G. Datskos

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Rapid detection of analytes with improved selectivity is achieved though the use of estimation theory to analyze the response of polymer-coated microcantilever chemical sensors. In general, chemical sensors exhibit partial selectivity and can have relatively long response times. Using estimation theory, it is possible to make short-term response predictions from past data. This makes it possible to use the transient information (response time), often unique to an analyte/coating pair, to achieve an improvement in analyte species recognition while simultaneously allowing for a reduction in the time required for identification and quantification. An extended Kalman filter is used as a recursive …

Generalized Characteristics Of Resonant Polymer-Coated Microcantilevers In Viscous Liquid Media, Russell Cox, Michael J. Wenzel, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich, Isabelle Dufour

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Expressions describing the resonant frequency and quality factor of a dynamically-driven, polymer-coated microcantilever in a viscous liquid medium have been obtained. These generalized formulas are used to describe the effects the operational medium and the coating has on the device sensitivity when used in liquid-phase chemical sensing applications. The derived expressions are shown to reduce to well-known formulas for the case of an uncoated cantilever in an invisicid [sic] medium and the case of a coated cantilever in air. The theoretical results are compared to existing chemical sensor data in aqueous and viscous solutions.
