Evaluation Of Empirical Prediction Methods For Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Spread From The 2010 Maule, Chile, MW 8.8 Earthquake In Port Coronel, Nicole D. Williams
Evaluation Of Empirical Prediction Methods For Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Spread From The 2010 Maule, Chile, MW 8.8 Earthquake In Port Coronel, Nicole D. Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Over the past several decades, empirical formulas have been developed and improved to predict liquefaction and lateral spread based on a database of case histories from observed earthquakes, such as Youd et al. (2002) and Rauch and Martin (2000). The 2010 Maule Chile earthquake is unique first of all because it is recent and was not used to develop recent liquefaction and lateral spread evaluation methods, and therefore can be reasonably used to evaluate the effectiveness of such equations. Additionally, the 8.8 magnitude megathrust event fills a significant gap in the databases used to develop these empirical formulas, which tends …

Use Of Roadway Attributes In Hot Spot Identification And Analysis, David R. Bassett
Theses and Dissertations
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Traffic and Safety Division continues to advance the safety of roadway sections throughout the state. In an effort to aid UDOT in meeting their goal, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Brigham Young University (BYU) has worked with the Statistics Department in developing analysis tools for safety. The most recent of these tools has been the development of a hierarchical Bayesian Poisson Mixture Model (PMM) of traffic crashes known as the Utah Crash Prediction Model (UCPM), a hierarchical Bayesian Binomial statistical model known as the Utah Crash Severity Model (UCSM), and a …

Lateral Resistance Of Pipe Piles Near 20-Ft Tall Mse Abutment Wall With Strip Reinforcements, Jason James Besendorfer
Theses and Dissertations
Full scale lateral load testing was performed on four 12.75x0.375 pipe piles spaced at 3.9, 2.9, 2.8, and 1.7 pile diameters behind an MSE wall which was constructed for this research to determine appropriate reduction factors for lateral pile resistance based on pile spacing behind the back face of the wall. The load induced on eight soil reinforcements located at various transverse distances from the pile and at different depths was monitored to determine the relationship between lateral load on the pile and load induced in the reinforcement. Each pile was loaded towards the wall in 0.25 in. increments to …
A Simplified Performance-Based Procedure For The Prediction Of Lateral Spread Displacements, Levi Thomas Ekstrom
A Simplified Performance-Based Procedure For The Prediction Of Lateral Spread Displacements, Levi Thomas Ekstrom
Theses and Dissertations
Characterization of the seismic hazard and ground-failure hazard of a site using traditional empirical lateral spread displacement models requires consideration of uncertainties in seismic loading, site conditions, and model prediction. Researchers have developed performance-based design methods to simultaneously account for these sources of uncertainty through the incorporation of a probabilistic analytical framework. While these methods can effectively handle the various sources of uncertainty associated with empirical lateral spread displacement prediction, they can be difficult for engineers to perform in a practical manner without the use of specialized numerical tools. To make the benefits of a performance-based approach accessible to a …

National studies suggest that eighty percent of existing code professionals are expected to retire within the next fifteen years. As part of this research, it was determined that approximately half of all licensed building inspectors in the State of Utah will reach retirement age within the next ten years. As building inspectors make up a large part of the Code Professional Industry this demographic was selected as the focus of this research. The purpose of this research project was to assess the urgent need for new entrants into the Code Professional Industry in Utah. As part of this research, trends …
Tethys Platform: A Development And Hosting Platform For Water Resources Web Apps, Nathan R. Swain
Tethys Platform: A Development And Hosting Platform For Water Resources Web Apps, Nathan R. Swain
Theses and Dissertations
The interactive nature of web applications or “web apps” makes it an excellent medium for conveying complex scientific concepts to lay audiences and creating decision support tools that harness cutting edge modeling techniques. However, the technical expertise required to develop them represents a barrier for would-be developers. The barrier can be characterized by the following hurdles that developers must overcome: (1) identify, select, and install software that meet the spatial and computational capabilities commonly required for water resources modeling; (2) orchestrate the use of multiple FOSS and FOSS4G projects and navigate their differing application programming interfaces (APIs); (3) learn the …
A New Global Forecasting Model To Produce High-Resolution Stream Forecasts, Alan Dee Snow
A New Global Forecasting Model To Produce High-Resolution Stream Forecasts, Alan Dee Snow
Theses and Dissertations
Warning systems with the ability to predict floods days in advance can benefit tens of millions of people. Because of these potential impacts there have been efforts to improve prediction systems such as the United States’ Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service and European-developed Global Flood Awareness System. However, these projects are currently limited to relatively coarse resolutions. This thesis presents a method for downscaling and routing global runoff forecasts generated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts using the Routing Application for Parallel computatIon of Discharge program that make possible orders of magnitude increases in the density of the resolution …
Organizational Learning In Commercial Construction: Lessons Learned From The 2007-2009 U.S. Recession, Evan Michael Danforth
Organizational Learning In Commercial Construction: Lessons Learned From The 2007-2009 U.S. Recession, Evan Michael Danforth
Theses and Dissertations
Organizational learning seeks to proactively expand the knowledge base of an organizational entity by incorporating knowledge, skills, and experience into the collective conscience of the company through the development of routines rather than relying on individual employees for these traits. Valuable experience gained by individuals who weather economic downturn with their companies must be absorbed into the corporate structure in a meaningful way so that it may be accessible for use during future recessions. This research asks what was learned by individuals during the most recent recession, what mechanisms were employed to retain and utilize this knowledge, and what cultures, …
Hydrologic Data Sharing Using Open Source Software And Low-Cost Electronics, Jeffrey Michael Sadler
Hydrologic Data Sharing Using Open Source Software And Low-Cost Electronics, Jeffrey Michael Sadler
Theses and Dissertations
While it is generally accepted that environmental data are critical to understanding environmental phenomena, there are yet improvements to be made in their consistent collection, curation, and sharing. This thesis describes two research efforts to improve two different aspects of hydrologic data collection and management. First described is a recipe for the design, development, and deployment of a low-cost environmental data logging and transmission system for environmental sensors and its connection to an open source data-sharing network. The hardware is built using several low-cost, open-source, mass-produced components. The system automatically ingests data into HydroServer, a standards-based server in the open …
Investigation Of Laboratory Test Procedures For Assessing The Structural Capacity Of Geogrid-Reinforced Aggregate Base Materials, Jaren Tolman Knighton
Investigation Of Laboratory Test Procedures For Assessing The Structural Capacity Of Geogrid-Reinforced Aggregate Base Materials, Jaren Tolman Knighton
Theses and Dissertations
The modulus of aggregate base layers in pavement structures can potentially be increased through the use of geogrid. However, methods for determining how much structural benefit can be expected from a given geogrid product have not been standardized. A laboratory testing protocol is therefore needed to enable evaluation, in terms of modulus or California bearing ratio (CBR), for example, of the degree of improvement that may be achieved by a given geogrid. Consequently, the objective of this research was to identify a laboratory test method that can be used to quantify improvements in structural capacity of aggregate base materials reinforced …
Modeling Stokes Flow Using Hierarchical Structure-Preserving B-Splines, Kendrick Monroe Shepherd
Modeling Stokes Flow Using Hierarchical Structure-Preserving B-Splines, Kendrick Monroe Shepherd
Theses and Dissertations
A new spline space, the hierarchical structure-preserving B-spline space, is introduced and implemented in the analysis of Stokes flow. The space, when properly constrained, is shown to be stable and to have at least optimal convergence rates in the velocity field and suboptimal convergence rates in the pressure field. However, results show that superoptimal convergence can often be expected in the pressure field, likely due to error reduction in the velocity field. Like other hierarchical spline spaces, these splines are shown to greatly increase accuracy and to drastically lower computation times for analyses on domains whose solution fields have singularities …
Using Remote Sensing To Explore The Time History Of Emergent Vegetation At Malheur Lake, Oregon, Zola Yaa Adjei
Using Remote Sensing To Explore The Time History Of Emergent Vegetation At Malheur Lake, Oregon, Zola Yaa Adjei
Theses and Dissertations
The growth patterns of emergent vegetation can be a useful indicator for factors affecting lake health. However, field data to characterize emergent vegetation at many reservoirs may not be available or may be limited to small, isolated areas. We present a case study using remotely sensed data from the Landsat satellite to generate data to represent emergent vegetation in the near-shoreline and tributary delta areas of Malheur Lake, Oregon. We selected late June images for this study as vegetation is relatively mature in late June and visible, but has not completely grown-in providing a better indication of vegetation coverage in …
Shear Strength Prediction Methods For Grouted Masonry Shear Walls, Patrick Dillon
Shear Strength Prediction Methods For Grouted Masonry Shear Walls, Patrick Dillon
Theses and Dissertations
The research in this dissertation is divided between three different approaches for predicting the shear strength of reinforcement masonry shear walls. Each approach provides increasing accuracy and precision in predicting the shear strength of masonry walls. The three approaches were developed or validated using data from 353 wall tests that have been conducted over the past half century. The data were collected, scrutinized, and synthesized using principles of meta-analysis. Predictions made with current Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC) shear strength equation are unconservative and show a higher degree of variation for partially-grouted walls. The first approach modifies the existing MSJC …
Reducing Drifts In Buckling Restrained Braced Framesthrough Elastic Stories, Jennifer Lorraine Craft
Reducing Drifts In Buckling Restrained Braced Framesthrough Elastic Stories, Jennifer Lorraine Craft
Theses and Dissertations
It is possible to reduce residual and maximum drifts in buildings by adding “elastic stories” that engage gravity columns in seismic response. An elastic story is a story wherein the buckling restrained brace frame (BRBF) size is increased to prevent yielding when an earthquake occurs. Buildings ranging from 4–16 stories were designed with various elastic story brace sizes and locations to determine the optimal combination to best reduce drifts. Gravity column stiffnesses were also varied in elastic story buildings to determine the effects on drifts. Computer models were used to analyze these buildings under a suite of earthquakes. Adding elastic …
Experimental Testing Of Shallow Embedded Connections Between Steel Columns And Concrete Footings, Nicholas Valgardson Barnwell
Experimental Testing Of Shallow Embedded Connections Between Steel Columns And Concrete Footings, Nicholas Valgardson Barnwell
Theses and Dissertations
Shallow embedded column connections are widely used for columns resisting gravity loads in current design methods. These connections are usually considered “pinned” for structural analysis. In reality these connections fall in between a fixed and a pinned condition. Although methods exist to estimate the stiffness and strength of exposed columns or embedded columns under lateral loads, little research has been done to determine the strength of shallow embedded columns. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the strength of these connections. A total of 12 specimens with varying orientation, embedment depth, and column size were loaded laterally until failure …
A Cloud-Based Modflow Service For Aquifer Management Decision Support, David Jones, Norm Jones, James Greer, Jim Nelson
A Cloud-Based Modflow Service For Aquifer Management Decision Support, David Jones, Norm Jones, James Greer, Jim Nelson
Faculty Publications
A framework to publish simplified MODFLOW groundwater modeling capabilities to a web interface for use by water managers and stakeholders is presented. Numerical modeling simulations can assist aquifer management decisions, but the amount of time and professional expertise required to wield modern groundwater models often exceeds the resources of regulating agencies – even for simple modeling tasks that are repetitive in nature. The framework is capable of automating such modeling tasks, accepting user input, executing MODFLOW, and generating specialized results including maps and modeling reports. This framework was used to build a pilot system for an aquifer in central Utah, …

A Review Of Open Source Software Solutions For Developing Water Resources Web Applications, Nathan R. Swain, Kilisimasi Latu, Scott D. Christensen, Norman L. Jones, E. James Nelson, Daniel P. Ames, Gustavious P. Williams
Faculty Publications
Water resources web applications or “web apps” are growing in popularity as a means to overcome many of the challenges associated with hydrologic simulations in decision-making. Water resources web apps fall outside of the capabilities of standard web development software, because of their spatial data components. These spatial data needs can be addressed using a combination of existing free and open source software (FOSS) for geographic information systems (FOSS4G) and FOSS for web development. However, the abundance of FOSS projects that are available can be overwhelming to new developers. In an effort to understand the web of FOSS features and …

Shear-Dominated Bending Behavior Of Carbon/Epoxy Composite Lattice Isobeam Structures, Kirsten Bramall Hinds
Theses and Dissertations
Composite lattice structures known as the IsoBeam™ made with unidirectional carbon/epoxy were manufactured and tested in shear-dominated bending. The manufacturing process consisted of placing tows of carbon fiber pre-impregnated with epoxy resin onto a pin-type mandrel to create members with interwoven joints. The members were consolidated with a half spiral aramid sleeve. The IsoBeam structure consists of two main types of members: longitudinal and diagonal members measuring nominally 0.4 in. (10.2 mm) and 0.2 in. (5.1 mm) in diameter, respectively. The hand-manufactured specimens measured nominally 6 in. (152.4 mm) high by 3 in. (76.2 mm) wide by 2 ft (0.61 …
Evaluation Of Current Empirical Methods For Predicting Lateral Spread-Induced Ground Deformations For Large Magnitude Earthquakes Using Maule Chile 2010 Case Histories, Ginger Emily Tryon
Evaluation Of Current Empirical Methods For Predicting Lateral Spread-Induced Ground Deformations For Large Magnitude Earthquakes Using Maule Chile 2010 Case Histories, Ginger Emily Tryon
Theses and Dissertations
Improving seismic hazard analysis is an important part of building safer structures and protecting lives. Since large magnitude earthquakes are rarer than other earthquakes, it is harder to model seismic hazards such as lateral spread displacements for these events. Engineers are often required to extrapolate current lateral spreading models when designing utilities, bridges, and piers to withstand the ground displacements caused by earthquakes with magnitudes larger than 8.0. This study uses three case histories from the Maule Chile 2010 earthquake (Mw =8.8) to develop recommendations on which models are most accurate for large earthquake events and how to improve the …

Latin American Data Drought: An Assessment Of Available River Observation Data In Select Latin American Countries And Development Of A Web-Based Application For A Hydrometerological Database System In Spanish, Stephen Joseph Bolster
Theses and Dissertations
The demand and collection of hydrometeorological data is growing to support hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, and other studies. These data can amount to extensive information that requires sound data management to enable efficient storage, access, and use. While much of the globe is using technology to efficiently collect and store hydrometeorological data, other parts, such as developing countries, are unable to do so. This thesis presents an assessment of available river observations data in Latin American countries in Central America and the Caribbean. The assessment analyzes 1) access to available data, 2) spatial density of data, and 3) the temporal …
Design And Implementation Of An Inverse Modeling Framework Using The Method Of Anchored Distributions, Carlos Andres Osorio Murillo
Design And Implementation Of An Inverse Modeling Framework Using The Method Of Anchored Distributions, Carlos Andres Osorio Murillo
Theses and Dissertations
Estimation of spatial random fields (SRFs) such as transmissivity or porosity is required for predicting groundwater flow and subsurface contaminant movement. Similarly, distributed parameter fields such as terrain roughness and evapotranspiration coefficients are required by other areas of environmental and earth sciences modeling. This dissertation presents an inverse modeling framework for characterizing SRFs called MAD#, which is an end-user software implementation of the Bayesian inverse modeling technique Method of Anchored Distributions (MAD). The MAD# framework allows modelers to “wrap” existing simulation modeling tools using an extensible driver architecture that exposes model parameters to the inversion engine. A compelling aspect of …
Lateral-Torsional Buckling Capacity Of Tapered-Flange Moment Frame Shapes, Leah O'Neill
Lateral-Torsional Buckling Capacity Of Tapered-Flange Moment Frame Shapes, Leah O'Neill
Theses and Dissertations
While moment frames are a popular lateral-force resisting system, their constant cross-section can lead to inefficiencies in energy absorption and stiffness. By tapering the flange width linearly toward the center of the beam length, the energy absorption efficiency can be increased, leading to a better elastic response from the beam and more elastic stiffness per pound of steel used. Lateral-torsional buckling is an important failure mode to be considered for tapered-flange moment frame shapes. No closed-form or finite element solutions have yet been developed for tapered-flange I-beams with a non-uniform, linear moment gradient and intermediate bracing conditions. In this study, …
Full-Scale Testing Of Blast-Induced Liquefaction Downdrag On Auger-Cast Piles In Sand, Joseph Erick Hollenbaugh
Full-Scale Testing Of Blast-Induced Liquefaction Downdrag On Auger-Cast Piles In Sand, Joseph Erick Hollenbaugh
Theses and Dissertations
Deep foundations like auger-cast piles and drilled shafts frequently extend through liquefiable sand layers and bear on non-liquefiable layers at depth. When liquefaction occurs, the skin friction on the shaft decreases to zero, and then increases again as the pore water pressure dissipates and the layer begins to settle, or compact. As the effective stress increases and the liquefiable layer settles, along with the overlaying layers, negative skin from the soil acts on the shaft. To investigate the loss of skin friction and the development of negative skin friction, soil-induced load was measured in three instrumented, full-scale auger-cast piles after …

Lateral Resistance Of Piles Near Vertical Mse Abutment Walls, Cody Hatch
Theses and Dissertations
A full scale MSE wall was constructed and piles were driven at various distances behind the wall. Lateral load testing was conducted and the performance of the pile, wall, and reinforcement were measured. The piles were 12.75 inch pipe piles, and the wall was reinforced with welded wire grid reinforcement. The objective of the testing was to characterize the relationship between the lateral pile resistance and the distance of the pile behind the back face of the MSE wall. Load-displacement curves are presented for the piles located behind the wall at 66 inches (5.3 diameters), 55 inches (4.3 diameters), 41 …
Influence Of Pile Shape On Resistance To Lateral Loading, Guillermo Bustamante
Influence Of Pile Shape On Resistance To Lateral Loading, Guillermo Bustamante
Theses and Dissertations
The lateral resistance of pile foundations has typically been based on the resistance of circular pipe piles. In addition, most instrumented lateral load tests and cases history have involved circular piles. However, piles used in engineering practice may also be non-circular cross-section piles such as square and H piles. Some researchers have theorized that the lateral resistance of square piles will be higher than that of circular piles (Reese and Van Impe, 2001; Briaud et al, 1983; Smith, 1987) for various reasons, but there is not test data to support this claims. To provide basic comparative performance data, lateral load …
Sediment Transport Conditions Near Culverts, Kyle Jay Rowley
Sediment Transport Conditions Near Culverts, Kyle Jay Rowley
Theses and Dissertations
Relatively little work has been done to understand how coarse grained sediments behave near culverts. Particularly for embedded culverts, sediment transport must be understood to achieve sustainable culvert designs for aquatic organism passage and peak discharge requirements. Several culvert sites in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah were studied through the spring flood season of 2014. Data obtained from the culvert sites were used to create numerical models with the Sedimentation and River Hydraulics Two-Dimensional model. The field sites and numerical model were used to study deposition of sediments at the entrance to culverts, sediment replenishment inside culverts, and lateral fining …
Source Apportionment Of Wastewater Using Bayesian Analysis Of Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Daniel B. Blake
Source Apportionment Of Wastewater Using Bayesian Analysis Of Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Daniel B. Blake
Theses and Dissertations
This research uses Bayesian analysis of fluorescence spectroscopy results to determine if wastewater from the Heber Valley Special Service District (HVSSD) lagoons in Midway, UT has seeped into the adjacent Provo River. This flow cannot be directly measured, but it is possible to use fluorescence spectroscopy to determine if there is seepage into the river.Fluorescence spectroscopy results of water samples obtained from HVSSD lagoons and from upstream and downstream in the Provo River were used to conduct this statistical analysis. The fluorescence 'fingerprints' for the upstream and lagoon samples were used to deconvolute the two sources in a downstream sample …
