Application Of Combined Jointed Media And Discrete Slip Plane Characteristics To Subsidence Predictions, David W. Basinger Dec 1984

Application Of Combined Jointed Media And Discrete Slip Plane Characteristics To Subsidence Predictions, David W. Basinger

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an application of a numerical formulation incorporating the effects of joints, cracks, and fractures to a soil subsidence predictions problem, and the extension of that formulation to combined discrete slip planes and jointed media continua formulations. The results obtained are compared to each other and to a physical centrifuge simulation performed previously on the same problem.

Two-Dimensional Computer Modeling Of Joints And Fractures In Continua, Royd R. Nelson Dec 1983

Two-Dimensional Computer Modeling Of Joints And Fractures In Continua, Royd R. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a numerical formulation which incorporates the effects of joints, cracks, and fractures into a mathematical mode used to in an existing finite element code. Two separate crack definitions were incorporated, one involving a discrete crack model, and the other a continuum approach defining a new material with regularly spaced joints. Several examples are also presented demonstrating the use of this capability.

Development Of A Computer-Aided Graphics Capability To Display Field Test Data, L. Allen Adams Aug 1983

Development Of A Computer-Aided Graphics Capability To Display Field Test Data, L. Allen Adams

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops an interactive computer-aided graphics package for the display of experimental and field test data. EXPERT was developed to be used in conjunction with MOVIE.BYU and DISSPLA, utilizing a bivariate interpolation scheme to create a full field of data using the "sparse" field data as pivotal points. The usefulness and practicality of the program is demonstrated by graphically displaying the data from the Air Force Weapons Laboratory's CHEAT test.

Development Of A Computer-Aided Analysis Package For Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, William E. Warkentin Apr 1983

Development Of A Computer-Aided Analysis Package For Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, William E. Warkentin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops an interactive computer-aided analysis package for solving linear elastic fracture mechanics problems. CHILES 2 (an existing finite element fracture mechanics program) was modified to be interactive. The modified program is named CHILES.BYU and is used in conjunction with QMESH.BYU and MOVIE.BYU to form the total software package. An analysis of glass ceramics and glass ceramic/metal interfaces was performed demonstrating the capabilities of the package. This study demonstrates the usefulness of an interactive package of computer programs to allow an engineer to rapidly investigate different crack configurations.

Scrubs.Byu A Two Dimensional Finite Element Package For Continuum Analysis Using Quadratic Isoparametric Elements, Michael Glenn Long Apr 1983

Scrubs.Byu A Two Dimensional Finite Element Package For Continuum Analysis Using Quadratic Isoparametric Elements, Michael Glenn Long

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops a two dimensional, axisymmetric finite element package for solving continuum problems including rubbleization subsidence and nonlinear fracture mechanics. This package includes both a user friendly preprocessor, PRESCRUBS.BYU, and a versatile analysis code SCRUBS.BYU. PRESCRUBS.BYU systematically creates the data file necessary to run SCRUBS.BYU. SCRUBS.BYU provides many options of nonlinear static analysis using either linear or quadratic isoparametric finite elements. Sample problems are presented that demonstrate the capabilities of this package.

The Des Moines Rapids: A History Of Its Adverse Effects On Mississippi River Traffic And Its Use As A Source Of Water Power To 1860, Donald L. Enders Jan 1973

The Des Moines Rapids: A History Of Its Adverse Effects On Mississippi River Traffic And Its Use As A Source Of Water Power To 1860, Donald L. Enders

Theses and Dissertations

During the 19th Century, the Mississippi River was the chief commercial highway in the United States. But for two impediments, the Upper and Lower (Des Moines) Rapids, its entire course of 2400 miles would have offered an untroubled thoroughfare to watercraft.

The federal government, as well as private concerns, attempted throughout the better part of that century to alleviate the river of its barriers and to develop its rapids as a source of power. Those attempts were disappointingly unsuccessful, however, and not until the advent of the 20th Century, when the nation had matured both economically and technologically, was the …

A Geographic Study Of Stone Houses In Selected Utah Communities, Barry M. Roth Jan 1973

A Geographic Study Of Stone Houses In Selected Utah Communities, Barry M. Roth

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will investigate the spatial location of stone houses and the areal differentiation of several characteristics of stone houses in selected communities. Some differences in cultural and historical factors and in types of building stone, quarries and quarrying techniques will be studied. The thesis will also investigate why stone houses are still in existence and things that owners, residents, and others like and dislike about them.

History Of Utah's Salt Industry 1847-1970, John L. Clark Jan 1971

History Of Utah's Salt Industry 1847-1970, John L. Clark

Theses and Dissertations

Utah salt makers have extracted salt from three sources, the principal of these being brine from Great Salt Lake. Other sources are saline beds in Great Salt Lake Desert and subterranean halite formations in central Utah.

This study traces the development of methods used to recover and refine salt by the industry, in general, and by specific companies. It provides brief, historical sketches of the major corporations and the economic, legal, and environmental factors affecting their growth.

Utah produces about 1 per cent of the nation's salt, exporting over half of it from the state. The major factors limiting the …

Geographical Characteristics Of Early Mormon Settlements, John Haws Baum Jan 1967

Geographical Characteristics Of Early Mormon Settlements, John Haws Baum

Theses and Dissertations

Considerable literature has been written about the Mormons and their settlement of the lands within the Great Basin; yet no one has produced a systematic study which analyzes the following geographical factors: What pattern of land occupancy was actually used by these early pioneers? Which physical characteristics determined the selection of a site for the Mormon village? What type of city survey pattern was instigated as towns were established along the eastern margin of the Great Basin? What was the relationship between the forts and the settlements in their lay-out patterns? As these questions were systematically analyzed new findings were …

Factors That Influenced Homesteading And Land Abandonment In San Juan County, Utah, Melvin J. Frost Jan 1960

Factors That Influenced Homesteading And Land Abandonment In San Juan County, Utah, Melvin J. Frost

Theses and Dissertations

Homesteading in San Juan County, Utah is for the most part, located on Sage Plain at elevations between 6,000 to 7,200 feet. Sage Plain is an undulating surface deeply dissected with canyons. The soil is relatively shallow and the predominant vegetation is pinyon, juniper, sage brush and blue-stem grass.

The 52 year mean precipitation is 15.47 inches. Since the beginning of weather records there has been a noticeable decrease in the annual precipitation. There is generally sufficient moisture to mature winter wheat. Pinto beans are also grown in the more favorable locations.

Principle factors that have influenced homesteading and land …

A Historical Study Of The Influence Of The Railroad Upon Ogden, Utah, 1868-1875, Alma W. Hansen Jan 1953

A Historical Study Of The Influence Of The Railroad Upon Ogden, Utah, 1868-1875, Alma W. Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

The general plan of this study is to sketch the beginning of Ogden settlement and the early history up to the beginnings of the influence of the coming of the railroad, then to follow in more detail the conditions and influences that developed as the railroad was built and the changes that followed the completion of the line.
