Analysis Of Bolted Rock By Computer Modeling, Niann-Chyun Wang Sep 1985

Analysis Of Bolted Rock By Computer Modeling, Niann-Chyun Wang

Theses

A computer model-based on VAX-ANSYS system was developed to model the behavior of multi-layer rock systems reinforced by pretensioned rock bolts. Three models were utilized for this study. The third model represents the friction between interlayers occuring due to the tensioned rock-bolts. Results obtained from this study compare favorably with those obtained from equations developed from model studies. An attempt has been made to study the effects of creep on the behavior of the rock-layer system.

Model Experiment Of Rock Fracturing Caused By Driving Piles, Dai-Heyng Lee Sep 1985

Model Experiment Of Rock Fracturing Caused By Driving Piles, Dai-Heyng Lee

Theses

The geotechical construction problem of rock fracturing caused by pile driving is investigated using a laboratory model. One inch diameter closed bottom steel pipes were driven into a simulated rock mass consisting of masonry bricks having an average compressive strength 3,200 psi. Both single pile and five pile model groups were tested. The single pile tests indicated that a threshold of penetration behavior occurred at a theorical hammer energy of 100 ft-lb and this was used for the group tests. Penetration rates were measured using an optical level.

Piles in the five pile model group were initially driven to a …

Removing Fluoride From Drinking Water By Organic Polymers, Eleni Davou Achilleos Jul 1985

Removing Fluoride From Drinking Water By Organic Polymers, Eleni Davou Achilleos

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Fluoride is a substance that can provide beneficial or detrimental effects depending on the total amount ingested. Naturally occurring high fluoride concentrations exist in many drinking water supplies. The fluoride removal methods developed in the past have been found to be either impractical and/or not cost effective.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether organic polymers can effectively remove fluoride. The water used in this study contained naturally occurring fluoride concentrations between 4.5 to 5.5 mg/1 and it was collected from the City of Franklin, Virginia, water supply system. Laboratory jar test procedures, which simulated a conventional water …

Behavior Of High Strength Irregular Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Compression, Gabriel Hannoush May 1985

Behavior Of High Strength Irregular Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Compression, Gabriel Hannoush

Theses

Other than rectangular and circular shapes, channel and L-shaped reinforced concrete columns are a common design problem for engineers. Since the available design aids and the current code provisions do not provide adequate guidelines for evaluating the ductility and strength of biaxially-loaded reinforced concrete columns, an experimental and analytical investigation and study of the behavior of biaxially-loaded channel and L-shaped short columns was undertaken.

Four one-quarter scale specimens, two specimens for L-shaped and channel shaped columns respectively, were casted, cured and tested till failure.

Moment, curvature and load deflection curves developed from the experiment were compared with the results obtained …

An Integrated, Interactive Analysis And Design Of High-Rise Buildings On Micro-Computers, Vijayakumar Balusu May 1985

An Integrated, Interactive Analysis And Design Of High-Rise Buildings On Micro-Computers, Vijayakumar Balusu

Theses

The implementation of Computer-Aided-Software, coupled with matrix and finite element techniques permitted the analysis and design of structures to the desired degree of accuracy and modelling. The successfulness of micro-computers in a vastly business oriented market has prompted the structural engineer to take advantage of cheaper and efficient micro-computers in the analysis and design of structures particularly the high-rise buildings. The availability of a comprehensive, integrated software for the analysis and design of high-rise building frames that can be operated on a micro-computer is either not currently available in the market or the available software programs do not fulfill the …

Review Of Construction Management Procedures Of New Jersey Department Of Transportation With The Objective Of Minimizing Claims, Suresh Kumar Ceyyur May 1985

Review Of Construction Management Procedures Of New Jersey Department Of Transportation With The Objective Of Minimizing Claims, Suresh Kumar Ceyyur

Theses

Recent years have evidenced a growing spate of construction claims being filed against NJDOT. A mail survey was conducted and problem areas of NJDOT construction management procedures frequently contributing to claims have been identified. NJDOT's pre-construction scheduling system has been reviewed to suggest improvements and practical integration to obtain effective feedback. NJDOT's organizational structure has many administrative bottlenecks and is overly bureaucratic. An analysis reveals that by way of minimal revamping and by integrating design and construction divisions better coordination can be achieved, bureaucratic norms reduced and the structure made resilient to react quickly to claim situations. Sources and causes …

Uplift Capacity Of Rigid Pile In Clay Under Inclined Load, Godwin Ikechukwu Ubanyionwu May 1985

Uplift Capacity Of Rigid Pile In Clay Under Inclined Load, Godwin Ikechukwu Ubanyionwu

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates the uplift capacity of rigid vertical piles embedded in saturated or near-saturated clayey soils subjected to inclined uplifting loads. Pile foundations are widely used in civil engineering applications requiring resistance to both axial and lateral forces, including transmission tower foundations, foundations on expansive soils, and mat foundations in areas subject to rising groundwater tables. While considerable research had addressed compressive load bearing capacity and lateral resistance of piles, experimental data on pile behavior under inclined uplift loading remained scarce at the time of this study. The present study was undertaken to conduct a systematic series of laboratory …

Selecting Non-Point Source Pollution Treatment Practices Using Linear Optimization, John Gardy Garland Iii Apr 1985

Selecting Non-Point Source Pollution Treatment Practices Using Linear Optimization, John Gardy Garland Iii

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This paper provides a case study application of a linear optimization program as a water quality management tool. The optimization program seeks to minimize the cost of nonpoint source pollution control by selecting the best combination of pollution control management practices for Hampton, Virginia. The management practice options are grass swale roadways, porous pavers, ponds, detention basins and fertilizer management education. Management practice selection is limited by constraints on land-use and water quality. Pollutants evaluated are total nitrogen, total phosphorus, suspended solids, fecal coliforms and biochemical oxygen demand (five-day). The value in the water quality constraints for pollution loading on …

The Applicability Of Microcomputers To Local Water Management, Roderick Lee Allen Feb 1985

The Applicability Of Microcomputers To Local Water Management, Roderick Lee Allen

Dissertations and Theses

Historically, hydrologic models have been available only on mainframe computers and have therefore not been used by local water managers to support daily decisions. The development of the microcomputer presents an opportunity for that to change.

Mathematical models of soil moisture and river routing are selected, developed and tested for use on a microcomputer as an aid to local water management. The models are then integrated with an appropriate data base in a computer program written for a microcomputer. The result is a Decision Support System for local water managers.

In order to evaluate the feasibility of using the Decision …

Relative Durability Of Shale -- A Suggested Rating System, David Newton Richardson Jan 1985

Relative Durability Of Shale -- A Suggested Rating System, David Newton Richardson

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The inability to predict the degradation tendencies of shale has resulted in numerous failures of projects where shale was used as a construction material. Because shale does not fit neatly into either a soil category or a rock category, the tests that are commonly used to classify soil or rock are in many instances not totally suitable for classifying shale as to its long-term behavior properties. Thus, special classification tests of shale types has become necessary. The durability or shale relates to how well it can withstand its changing environment and still retain its initial properties. Strength, expansion characteristics, and …

The Effect Of The Degree Of Saturation On The Permeability Of A Compacted Clay To Organic Permeants, Mark Alan Harms Jan 1985

The Effect Of The Degree Of Saturation On The Permeability Of A Compacted Clay To Organic Permeants, Mark Alan Harms

Masters Theses

"Relationships for permeability of kaolinite versus degree of saturation and permeability versus flow are developed for 0.005 N calcium sulphate, xylene and aniline permeants using the triaxial flexible wall permeameter. The clay was statically compacted at degrees of saturation of 50%, 75% and 100%. A gradient of 277 was used for the permeability tests.

The initial degree of saturation was inversely related to the permeability of the clay. Saturated clay samples were found to be virtually impervious to aniline and xylene. As the degree of saturation decreased, the permeability increased with the initial volume of flow equivalent to the volume …
