"This presentation consists of the application of empirical equations for the calculation of the water influx into a radial oil reservoir in which the history of the rate and cumulative water influx are equated to the pressure decrements and time. This new analysis, based on William Hurst's solution for the steady-state water influx, yields an accurate method for determining water influx through the application of simple linear empirical equations. These linear approximations reproduce the rigorous influx solutions to a maximum deviation of 1.6 per cent"--Abstract, page ii.

"Silver and platinum, although not used extensively in industry, find considerable use in specialized work. Silver, because of its much lower cost, is used to a greater extent than platinum. Since silver has a high position in the electromotive series, it is very resistant to chemical attack. It is unaffected by alkaline conditions even at high temperatures and hence silver is used in ladles and molds for producing pure sodium and potassium hydroxides. "A permeability apparatus was used to measure the permeability coefficients of eight Lithium-Calcium greases and ten Baragel greases in which the viscosity and type of the oil component were varied. The oil present in each grease was used for its permeability measurement.

An improved sample packing technique was developed to improve the repeatability of permeability measurements. Repeatability of ± 3% was achieved. In general the permeability coefficients of the non-soap Baragel greases were higher than those of the lithium-calcium greases with comparable oil components, and those of greases containing paraffinic oils were higher than these containing naphthenic oils. "A capillary tube viscometer was built for the purpose of investigating the fluid properties of non-Newtonian aqueous CMC and Carbopol solutions. The viscometer was tested with Newtonian liquids (glycerine, water and two different oils) having known viscosities to insure that the viscometer was operating correctly. The shear stress-shear rate data obtained for different concentrations of CMC and Carbopol solutions were correlated using the simple power law model. The power law constants were only slightly affected by saturating the solution with iodine and carbon tetrachloride. "A simple method for predicting the thermal conductivity of binary non-polar gaseous mixtures from the force parameters of the pure components and composition was developed. The method is an extension of the application of the combining methods previously derived for viscosity predictions. Altogether, the published thermal conductivities of 683 binary non-polar mixtures at various temperature levels were compared with the corresponding calculated thermal conductivities resulting from the prediction method. The corresponding values predicted from Hirschfelder, Curtiss and Bird's expression were also compared.

    "The applicability of the Strunk, Custead, and Stevenson method for predicting the viscosities of multicomponent, non-polar, gaseous mixtures vas investigated. The viscosities of 24 ternary and quaternary gaseous mixtures were experimentally determined, at 3 temperature levels, and compared with the corresponding calculated viscosities resulting from the prediction method. In addition, the published viscosities of 64 multicomponent mixtures were compared with the corresponding calculated viscosities.

    "A strain of Thiobaci.llus thiooxidans was isolated from a West Virginia coal mine drainage. This strain was characterized by its production of sulfuric acid in shake flasks. The strain was also compared with a pure culture of h thiooxidans obtained from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC number 8085).

    The strain was grown in submerged culture in a 16-liter pilot scale fermenter. Two aeration systems, air and air enriched with carbon dioxide, were examined.     "The purpose of this investigation was to determine an assay method for measuring the activity of the indole acetic acid oxidase present in Hygrophorus conicus. This enzyme converts tryptamine or indole acetic acid (IAA) into oxindole acetic acid (OIAA).

    An assay method for measuring the activity of the enzyme was developed based on the spectrophotometric measurement of tryptamine, IAA, and OIAA. Several other assay methods were tried.     "A 10-liter batch type pilot plant fermentor has been designed and constructed. The design incorporated most of the desirable features of previous designs reported in the literature.

    The stainless steel fermentor has a multi-speed agitator and aeration rates as high as 15 cubic feet per hour. Temperature indicating, temperature controlling, pH measuring, and automatic foam controlling systems are included in the design.

    Sulfite oxidation rates have been determined for the unit at 15 operating conditions. A maximum sulfite oxidation rate of 1060 millimoles of oxygen per liter per hour has been obtained.

Capillary pressure curves were determined for six cores by this technique and were compared to the curves for the same cores determined by the semi-permeable barrier technique. The technique differs from previously reported centrifuge techniques in that the centrifuge was slowly accelerated from zero to the maximum desired speed, rather than being held constant at particular, progressively higher speeds.     A flotation cell provided with controlled air and liquid flow rates was used for the continuous process. Air flow rates between zero and 29.4 cubic feet per hour were investigated.
