Creep Of Hi-Nicalon™ S Ceramic Fiber Tows At 800°C In Air And In Silicic Acid-Saturated Steam, Scott J. Robertson

Theses and Dissertations

A facility was demonstrated that successfully resolved problems highlighted by previous attempts to study SiC fibers in steam. Monotonic tension and creep tests were conducted to characterize the fibers. The tensile strength of the fibers showed little dependence on applied stress rate, indicating a resistance to environmentally assisted crack growth. Climb-controlled diffusion in air and grain boundary sliding in silicic acid-saturated steam were the dominant damage mechanisms. Silicic acid-saturated steam had a degrading effect on the mechanical performance of the fibers, but much less than unsaturated steam environments. The Monkman-Grant relationship was demonstrated for Hi-NicalonTM S fibers and may be …

Simulation Of Metal Particulates In High Energetic Materials, Eduardo Nieto Jun 2015

Simulation Of Metal Particulates In High Energetic Materials, Eduardo Nieto

Theses and Dissertations

This research focused on analyzing the effects of aluminum in high explosives such as PBX9501 using the MPEXS computational simulation code for a wide range of metalized explosive cases. The varying parameters are aluminum particle diameter and mass fraction of aluminum. The addition of metal particulates in explosive mixtures increases the density of the shock wave, causing a higher pressure in the shock. It was concluded that pressure and density steadily increases as the Al particle diameter increases, and pressure and density decreases when Al mass fraction increases. The concentrated pressures will dissipate quickly due to the high density, providing …

Faculty Publications

The application of guided waves to interrogate remote areas of structural components has been researched extensively in characterizing damage. However, there exists a sparsity of work in using piezoelectric transducer-generated guided waves as a method of assessing stress intensity factors (SIF). This quantitative information enables accurate estimation of the remaining life of metallic structures exhibiting cracks, such as military and commercial transport vehicles. The proposed full wavefield approach, based on 3D laser vibrometry and piezoelectric transducer-generated guided waves, provides a practical means for estimation of dynamic stress intensity factors (DSIF) through local strain energy mapping via the J-integral. Strain energies …

Silicon Carbide (SiC) ceramic fibers have been used as constituent materials in CMCs, although oxidation of the SiC to SiO2 has been a known degredation mechanism. Recently developed near stoichiometric SiC fibers have shown significant improvements in thermochemical stability; …

The Effect Of Elevated Temperature On The Inelastic Deformation Behavior Of Pmr-15 Solid Polymer, Chad E. C. Ryther Jan 2012

The Effect Of Elevated Temperature On The Inelastic Deformation Behavior Of Pmr-15 Solid Polymer, Chad E. C. Ryther

Theses and Dissertations

The inelastic deformation behavior of PMR-15 neat resin, a high-temperature thermoset polymer, was investigated at temperatures in the 274-316°C range. The experimental program was developed to explore the influence of temperature on tensile loading, relaxation and creep behaviors of PMR-15. The results demonstrate that the mechanical behavior of PMR-15 exhibits a strong dependence on temperature. During strain-controlled tensile loading, the slope of the stress-strain curve in the quasi-elastic region decreases and the flow stress level decreases with increasing temperature. During relaxation, the amount of the stress drop decreases with increasing temperature. Based on experimental results the Viscoplasticity Based on Overstress …

The Use Of Various Failure Criteria As Applied To High Speed Wear, David A. Huber Dec 2011

The Use Of Various Failure Criteria As Applied To High Speed Wear, David A. Huber

Theses and Dissertations

This research has been aimed at developing methods to predict mechanical wear of sliding bodies at high velocities. Specifically, wear of test sled slippers at the Holloman High Speed Test Track at Holloman AFB, NM, is being considered. Developing a numerical model to represent the velocity range achieved at the test track is infeasible, so numerical modeling techniques must be adopted. Previous research has made use of finite element codes to simulate the high velocity sliding event. However, the extreme velocities at the test track can create numerical errors in the finite element codes. To avoid the numerical errors, an …
