Configuration Validation Of A Novel In-Space Propellant Storage And Transfer System, Priyadarshan Sundararaju Dec 2016

Configuration Validation Of A Novel In-Space Propellant Storage And Transfer System, Priyadarshan Sundararaju

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The concept of developing a new technology for on-orbit storage and refueling system has been a great interest among scientists for many decades. This study is about Centaur-based on-orbit propellant storage and transfer. This system takes the advantage of rotational settling to a simple fluid management (FM) system. Specifically, enabling settled fluid transfer and settled pressure control between two tanks. This thesis work focuses on configuration and validation of static and dynamic stability, mass gauging and CFD analysis of the rotational propellant transfer method in space. The application of this technology in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geo-Synchronous Orbit (GEO) …

Computational Investigation Of Impingement Cooling For Regeneratively Cooled Rocket Nozzles, Bianca A. De Angelo May 2016

Computational Investigation Of Impingement Cooling For Regeneratively Cooled Rocket Nozzles, Bianca A. De Angelo

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Jet impingement cooling is an internal cooling configuration used in the thermal management of temperature sensitive systems. With rocket engine combustion temperatures rising as high as 3600 K, it is essential for a cooling method to be applied to ensure that the nozzle integrity can be maintained. Therefore, a novel heat transfer study is conducted to investigate if jet impingement cooling is feasible for a regenerative cooling rocket nozzle application. Regenerative cooling for liquid propellant rockets has been widely studied. However, to the best of the author’s knowledge, there is currently no literature describing this method in conjunction with impingement …

Exploration Of A Computational Fluid Dynamics Integrated Design Methodology For Potential Application To A Wind Turbine Blade, Gaurav Kapoor Nov 2014

Exploration Of A Computational Fluid Dynamics Integrated Design Methodology For Potential Application To A Wind Turbine Blade, Gaurav Kapoor

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The main purpose of this thesis is to conduct a parametric sensitivity study on the blade design of AOC 15/50 wind turbine based on a CFD approach and optimize the blade design for maximizing the power output. The ANSYS® Fluent® flow solver using the k-ω SST turbulence model was validated by simulating the flow over two dimensional airfoils comprising the AOC 15/50 wind turbine blade. The CFD results have shown a considerable agreement with the experimental data for the airfoils. Parametric correlation study and sensitivity analysis were conducted by performing actual flow simulations over the turbine blade using ANSYS® Fluent®. …

Investigation Of Pulse Detonation Engine Flow Conditions For Turbomachinery Integration, Luis Estefano Ferrer-Vidal EspañA-Heredia Oct 2014

Investigation Of Pulse Detonation Engine Flow Conditions For Turbomachinery Integration, Luis Estefano Ferrer-Vidal EspañA-Heredia

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Pressure gain combustion has been known to be more thermodynamically efficient than its constant pressure counterpart, which employs deflagration. Integration of pressure gain combustors into gas turbine engines has been and still is one of the most important challenges facing the gas turbine industry. Pressure gain combustion devices are inherently unsteady. This unsteadiness affects turbomachinery components designed using steady operation assumptions, and results in mechanical inefficiencies which could outweigh the thermal efficiency benefits. Understanding of turbine components specifically made to operate in the exhaust conditions provided by a pressure gain combustor may yield new turbine design paradigms. As a first …

Reduction Of Secondary Flow Losses In A Turbine For Use In Man-Portable Power Generation, Andrew J. Yatsko Oct 2014

Reduction Of Secondary Flow Losses In A Turbine For Use In Man-Portable Power Generation, Andrew J. Yatsko

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

As the world has moved into a more energy-demanding environment, there has been the push for higher energy density in a smaller package. One of the potential solutions is through the application of a gas turbine engine; yet the challenge is extracting the energy efficiently through the small components. The focus of the research is on the turbine components and how the secondary flow losses from the generated airfoil shapes can be reduced to improve component performance. One of the secondary flow loss items to be addressed is the generation of the Horseshoe Vortex. The Horseshoe Vortex is an aerodynamic …

The Effect Of The 2-Dimensional Magnetic Field Profile In Hall Thrusters, Megan Lewis Harvey May 2014

The Effect Of The 2-Dimensional Magnetic Field Profile In Hall Thrusters, Megan Lewis Harvey

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Electric propulsion engines, in particular Hall thrusters, provide the possibility of long-distance, low-cost space travel. The geometrical details of the Hall thrusters, especially the magnetic field prole, are crucial to improving their efficiency. The effect of the magnetic field structure was investigated using a simple, two-dimensional model, assuming axial symmetry. The previous one-dimensional conclusion, namely that the details of the shape of the magnetic field are unimportant, was confirmed. This result has implications for the design of future Hall thruster engines, with an eye toward maximizing their efficiency.

Experimental Investigation And Cfd Simulation Of Active Damping Mechanism For Propellant Slosh In Spacecraft Launch Systems, Dhawal Leuva Oct 2011

Experimental Investigation And Cfd Simulation Of Active Damping Mechanism For Propellant Slosh In Spacecraft Launch Systems, Dhawal Leuva

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Motion of propellant in the liquid propellant tanks due to inertial forces transferred from actions like stage separation and trajectory correction of the launch vehicle is known as propellant slosh. If unchecked, propellant slosh can reach resonance and lead to complete loss of the spacecraft stability, it can change the trajectory of the vehicle or increase consumption of propellant from the calculated requirements, thereby causing starvation of the latter stages of the vehicle. Predicting the magnitude of such slosh events is not trivial. Several passive mechanisms with limited operating range are currently used to mitigate the effects of slosh. An …

Innovative Double Bypass Engine For Increased Performance, Sanjivan Manoharan Oct 2011

Innovative Double Bypass Engine For Increased Performance, Sanjivan Manoharan

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Engines continue to grow in size to meet the current thrust requirements of the civil aerospace industry. Large engines pose significant transportation problems and require them to be split in order to be shipped. Thus, large amounts of time have been spent in researching methods to increase thrust capabilities while maintaining a reasonable engine size. Unfortunately, much of this research has been focused on increasing the performance and efficiencies of individual components while limited research has been done on innovative engine configurations. This thesis focuses on an innovative engine configuration, the High Double Bypass Engine, aimed at increasing fuel efficiency …

The Propulsive Design Aspects On The World’S First Direct Drive Hybrid Airplane, Ankit Nanda Oct 2011

The Propulsive Design Aspects On The World’S First Direct Drive Hybrid Airplane, Ankit Nanda

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to design a safe technology demonstrator by implementing a direct drive propulsion system for a gas-electric hybrid aircraft. This system was integrated on the Embry-Riddle Eco-Eagle for the Green Flight Challenge 2011. The aim of the system is to allow the pilot to use the electric motor as an independent power source to fly the aircraft once at cruise altitude, while having a gas engine to allow for higher power capability.

The system was designed to incorporate the motor and the motor control unit provided by Flight Design and Drivetek AG alongside a Rotax …
