Performance Evaluation Of Routing Protocols And Ml-Based Enhancements For Uav-Assisted Post-Disaster Communication Networks, Prachi Choudhary Dec 2024

Performance Evaluation Of Routing Protocols And Ml-Based Enhancements For Uav-Assisted Post-Disaster Communication Networks, Prachi Choudhary

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

During natural disasters, the existing communication systems collapse, and the disaster-affected areas become disconnected without any means of exchanging information. The collapse of existing communication networks poses challenges for First-Responders (FRs) in locating survivors during Search and Rescue (SAR) operations and for survivors to communicate for emergency aid. To alleviate post-disaster consequences and save lives, Uncrewed Air Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, can be employed to establish adaptable and reliable emergency communication networks. UAVs offer portability and rapid deployment, making them effective in crises. This thesis presents two main contributions: 1) Evaluation and Comparison of Routing Protocol Performance: The …

Air Supremacy, The Enabler Of Close Air Support Operations – An Evaluation Of Past, Present, And Future Air Campaigns., Owen Topolnicki Dec 2024

Air Supremacy, The Enabler Of Close Air Support Operations – An Evaluation Of Past, Present, And Future Air Campaigns., Owen Topolnicki

Senior Honors Theses

The achievement of gaining aerial supremacy, or lack thereof, is the hinge upon which Close Air Support (CAS) swings. The attainment of it enables CAS specialist aircraft, not unlike the Ju-87 Stuka or A-10 Thunderbolt II, to be exceptionally effective in their operating environment. While the lack of it, forces aircrews to pioneer new solutions either in the form of multi-role aircraft (capable of self-defense), or other innovative solutions similar to unmanned aerial systems (UAS’s), as aptly seen in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian conflict. Thus, the ability of an air force to gain air supremacy and to do so quickly, …

Equivalent-Area Studies For Sonic Boom Loudness Mitigation On A Commercial Supersonic Aircraft Configuration, Zachary N. Foster

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

Since the early 1970s, the FAA has banned commercial supersonic flight over populated areas. This ban has limited aerospace manufacturers’ and commercial aircraft companies’ ability to design and operate subsonic aircraft in their fleets. Since then, research has been conducted to understand the sonic boom and learn how to minimize its loudness. The work presented in this project report aims to use a 1D low-fidelity analysis to study the effect of perturbations to the outer mold line (OML) of a representative model of the N+2 Quiet Commercial Supersonic Concept Aircraft. Using a 1D analysis that employs an equivalent area method, …

Controller Software: Evolution, Identification, And Implementation, Balaji Balasubramaniam

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

In the annals of automation history and advancement, one can find control technology is at the core. Modern-day controllers rely heavily on software capability to provide stability and improve the system's performance. In particular, drone flight controllers use autopilot control software to accomplish autonomous navigation from take-off to landing. However, we know very little about how the controller code modifications and its impact, particularly at the software level. No general framework has been developed to identify the control code changes and observe the real values of software control loops at the kernel layer.

In this thesis, we lay the foundation …

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (Uav)-Based High-Throughput Phenotyping For Maize Improvement, Eric T. Rodene

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Modern breeding programs rely heavily on efficiently screening large numbers of genotypes for agronomic traits, such as disease resistance, drought tolerance, and yield. Identifying the genetic loci or genes associated with these traits using GWAS or functional analyses will benefit future plant breeding efforts seeking to incorporate these traits into new crop varieties, whether through conventional breeding or gene editing techniques. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based image data has been increasingly used for this task, as it allows entire test plots to be quickly and cost-effectively phenotyped. In my research, I have developed methods to improve the accuracy of machine learning …

Study On Pilot Response Time To Reject Takeoff With One Engine Inoperative (Oei), Lydia Savitri Scrivens Jul 2024

Study On Pilot Response Time To Reject Takeoff With One Engine Inoperative (Oei), Lydia Savitri Scrivens

Theses and Dissertations

The FAA regulation 14 CFR § 25.109 defines accelerate-stop testing for transport-category multiengine aircraft. It specifies that testing must include 2-second distance equivalent at engine failure speed VEF to simulate time taken for pilot to reject takeoff. However, pilot response time is widely debated. The purpose of this study is to determine pilot response time in rejecting a takeoff due to the failure of one engine during the takeoff roll.

Seven multiengine rated pilots participated in this study, which was conducted in a Baron 58 in the X-Plane 12 flight simulator. During the recruiting process, test subject candidates provided their …

Successful Rocket Launch In Argonia, Seungyou Cho Apr 2024

Successful Rocket Launch In Argonia, Seungyou Cho

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

The object of launching the PK-56 (The name of the kit) rocket is how to take off and land safely using the parachute deployment. To inspect the engineering process, I tried to get an L1 certification from Tripoli Rocketry Association who is judging whether the rocket was flying stable. This consisted of building the structure, deployment system, engine system, anddesigning process. The most important thing was to read the instructions thoroughly, and to build a safe rocket.

Since launching high-power rockets needs a comprehensive understanding of those processes, I tested with small rocket with a motor that impulses 1.26 N …

Implementation Of Path Planning Methods To Detect And Avoid Gps Signal Degradation In Urban Environments, Ayush Raminedi Apr 2024

Implementation Of Path Planning Methods To Detect And Avoid Gps Signal Degradation In Urban Environments, Ayush Raminedi

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

In the modern world, various missions are being carried out under the assistance of autonomous flight vehicles due to their ability to operate in a wide range of flight conditions. Regardless, these autonomous vehicles are prone to GPS signal loss in urban environments due to obstructions that cause scintillation, multi-path, and shadowing. These effects that decrease the GPS functionality can deteriorate the accuracy of GPS positioning causing losses in signal tracking leading to a decrease in navigation performance. These effects are modeled into the simulation environment and are used as part of the path planning algorithm to provide better navigation …

Prediction Of Handling Qualities Deficiencies For Advanced Air Mobility Aircraft, Louis Spier Apr 2024

Prediction Of Handling Qualities Deficiencies For Advanced Air Mobility Aircraft, Louis Spier

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

To date, there are hundreds of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) vehicles under development. Most of these vehicles differ significantly from traditional airplanes and rotorcraft when it comes to configuration and handling qualities. Handling qualities for traditional airplanes and rotorcraft are often very predictable. All AAM concepts currently under development feature some sort of fly-by-wire flight control system. Regulatory agencies already have decades of experience with certifying fly-by-wire airplanes. Fly-by-wire rotorcraft have proven to be significantly more difficult to certify and several flight test accidents have occurred as a result of handling qualities deficiencies, or “cliffs”. To ensure the safe and …

Mitigating Engine Unstart In Scramjets With Porous Bleeders, Ryan Lindley Apr 2024

Mitigating Engine Unstart In Scramjets With Porous Bleeders, Ryan Lindley

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The effectiveness of porous bleeders in mitigating unstart phenomena and enhancing isolator effectiveness in a hypersonic scramjet was investigated. Through computational fluid dynamics simulations, the impact of porous bleeder design parameters such as pressure jump coefficient and bleeder size on isolator effectiveness and unstart prevention was evaluated. Results indicated that porous bleeders delayed flow separation and reduced adverse pressure gradients, thereby enhancing isolator performance. Additionally, porous bleeders demonstrated promising capabilities in preventing full unstart events and mitigating oscillatory unstart phenomena.
