Advancements In Elliptic Mesh Redistribution And Automated Overset Grid Generation For Computational Fluid Dynamics, Chase Ashby
Advancements In Elliptic Mesh Redistribution And Automated Overset Grid Generation For Computational Fluid Dynamics, Chase Ashby
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Automated and robust structured curvilinear overset grid generation remains a significant challenge for the application of computational fluid dynamics. This thesis intro- duces a specialized anisotropic Mach cone aligned adaptation algorithm for low-boom simulations and an automated procedure for generating structured curvilinear overset grids for immersed boundary simulations. Results demonstrate that anisotropic mesh adaptation can reduce computational resource usage by over 50% while maintaining sonic boom prediction accuracy across the entire sonic boom domain compared to user-constructed Mach cone aligned grids. The proposed immersed overset grid gen- eration procedure eliminates the need for complex surface generation algorithms, producing grids suitable …

Mobile Robot Adhesion Methodology And Development Of An Automatous Robot Module, Lauren Baird, Zachariah Stone, Madison Lemons, Jonathon Moody
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Due to the increasing availability of space travel as not only a scientific exploration but a commercial exploration, there is a need for an onsite repair station that can be deployed in the event of aircraft maintenance, damage, or failure. We have been tasked with researching and creating a prototype of an automatous robot that can be attached to a spacecraft body, move along the surface while avoiding obstacles, scan for damage, 3D print a repair piece, and then make the repair, all without the need of direct human input. Our team, as will be discussed throughout, was tasked with …

Digital transformation is a new trend that describes enterprise efforts in transitioning manual and likely outdated processes and activities to digital formats dominated by the extensive use of Industry 4.0 elements, including the pervasive use of cyber-physical systems to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and increase responsiveness. A new domain that intersects supply chain management and cybersecurity emerges as many processes as possible of the enterprise require the convergence and synchronizing of resources and information flows in data-driven environments to support planning and execution activities. Protecting the information becomes imperative as big data flows must be parsed and translated into actions …
Ambient Temperature Strength Degradation Of A Ceramic Matrix Composite Due To Solid Particle Erosion, Jonathan Clawson
Ambient Temperature Strength Degradation Of A Ceramic Matrix Composite Due To Solid Particle Erosion, Jonathan Clawson
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Solid particle erosion (SPE) is an issue for aircraft exposed to hard, fine particles, such as sand or dust, that can be ingested into the engine at a high velocity without reaching their melting point, resulting in material removal. SPE can be attributed to the intake of particulate debris from the runway or from airborne particulates. The cumulative mass loss from SPE damage affects the structural integrity and performance of the engine; however, its effects on ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), that are being employed in the aerospace industry, are not well understood in literature. The limited SPE research studies that …
Implementation Of Cavity Vortex Generators To Mitigate Stall And Ice Accretion On The Naca 0012, Eric Pernell
Implementation Of Cavity Vortex Generators To Mitigate Stall And Ice Accretion On The Naca 0012, Eric Pernell
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
With the growing environmental concerns of international aviation carbon emissions are driven by the ever-increasing commercial aviation traffic. This study aims to increase the aerodynamic efficiency of the NACA 0012, by implementing cavity vortex generators with the intent to increase the effective stall angle without a substantial increase of drag. This study is performed with Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) at a low Reynolds of 5.0E+04 with varying cavity depths along the leading edge. The depths study is placed at 10 percent cord at depths of 3, 5, and 10 percent cord. All cavity vortex generators effectively increased the stall angle …
Comprehensive Review And Development Of A High-Pressure Hydraulic Impedance Tube For Vibroacoustic Attenuator Characterization, Matthew D. Beals
Comprehensive Review And Development Of A High-Pressure Hydraulic Impedance Tube For Vibroacoustic Attenuator Characterization, Matthew D. Beals
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This research establishes a versatile test bench for characterizing hydraulic vibroacoustic attenuators. The primary evaluation metric is the transfer matrix, determined experimentally, with an emphasis on key properties such as transmission loss. To ensure accuracy and broad applicability, the methodology is based on industry-standard techniques for determining the transfer matrix. A comprehensive literature review consolidates existing approaches for hydraulic attenuator characterization. The test bench features a hydraulic impedance tube equipped with eight dynamic pressure transducer (DPT) taps strategically positioned before and after the sample interface. This setup accommodates arbitrary samples terminated with standard hydraulic fittings. Using ASTM E2611, the transfer …

Autonomous Strike Uavs For Counterterrorism Missions: Challenges And Preliminary Solutions, Meshari Aljohani, Ravi Mukkamala, Stephan Olariu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
UAVs are becoming a crucial tool in modern warfare, primarily due to their cost-effectiveness, risk reduction, and ability to perform a wider range of activities. The use of autonomous UAVs to conduct strike missions against highly valuable targets is the focus of this research. Due to developments in ledger technology, smart contracts, and machine learning, such activities formerly carried out by professionals or remotely flown UAVs are now feasible. Our study provides the first in-depth analysis of challenges and potential solutions for successful implementation of an autonomous UAV mission.

Fundamentals of Sustainable Aviation is the frst textbook to survey the critical feld of sustainability within the aviation industry. Taking a systems thinking approach, it presents the foundational principles of sustainability and methodically applies them to diferent aviation sectors. Opening with the basics of sustainability, emphasising the Sustainable Development Goals, the book then considers the environmental, economic and social dimensions of aviation. The following chapters apply these insights to aviation design, supply chains, operations, maintenance and facilities. The fnal chapter examines the concept of resilience in sustainable aviation. Overall, the textbook shows how future sustainability can be achieved by making …
