Design Of Low-Thrust Missions To Asteroids With Analysis Of The Missed-Thrust Problem, Frank E. Laipert Apr 2015

Design Of Low-Thrust Missions To Asteroids With Analysis Of The Missed-Thrust Problem, Frank E. Laipert

Open Access Dissertations

Small bodies in the Solar System, such as asteroids and dwarf planets, are ideal targets for electric propulsion missions because of the high delta-V required to rendezvous with these targets. We study trajectories to the asteroid belt, including a human mission to Ceres and a sample return mission to (216) Kleopatra, along with trajectories to the Jupiter Trojan asteroids. For the human mission to Ceres, payload masses of 75 Mg are achievable with a 11.7 MW nuclear electric propulsion system and an initial mass in LEO of 289 Mg. For low-thrust sample return missions to the main belt asteroid Kleopatra, …

Maneuver Analysis For Spinning Thrusting Spacecraft And Spinning Tethered Spacecraft, Kaela Mae Martin Apr 2015

Maneuver Analysis For Spinning Thrusting Spacecraft And Spinning Tethered Spacecraft, Kaela Mae Martin

Open Access Dissertations

During axial thrusting of a spin-stabilized spacecraft undergoing orbital injections or control maneuvers, misalignments and center-of-mass offset create undesired body-fixed torques. The effects of the body-fixed torques, which in turn cause velocity pointing errors, can be reduced by ramping up (and then ramping down) the thruster. The first topic discussed in this thesis derives closed-form solutions for the angular velocity, Euler angles, inertial velocity, and inertial displacement solutions with nonzero initial conditions. Using the closed-form solutions, the effect of variations in the spin-axis moment of inertia and spin-rate on the spacecraft velocity pointing error are shown. The analytical solutions closely …

System Importance Measures: A New Approach To Resilient Systems-Of-Systems, Payuna Uday Apr 2015

System Importance Measures: A New Approach To Resilient Systems-Of-Systems, Payuna Uday

Open Access Dissertations

Resilience is the ability to withstand and recover rapidly from disruptions. While this attribute has been the focus of research in several fields, in the case of system-of-systems (SoSs), addressing resilience is particularly interesting and challenging. As infrastructure SoSs, such as power, transportation, and communication networks, grow in complexity and interconnectivity, measuring and improving the resilience of these SoSs is vital in terms of safety and providing uninterrupted services. ^ The characteristics of systems-of-systems make analysis and design of resilience challenging. However, these features also offer opportunities to make SoSs resilient using unconventional methods. In this research, we present a …

Assessment Of High-Fidelity Collision Models In The Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method, Andrew Brian Weaver Apr 2015

Assessment Of High-Fidelity Collision Models In The Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method, Andrew Brian Weaver

Open Access Dissertations

Advances in computer technology over the decades has allowed for more complex physics to be modeled in the DSMC method. Beginning with the first paper on DSMC in 1963, 30,000 collision events per hour were simulated using a simple hard sphere model. Today, more than 10 billion collision events can be simulated per hour for the same problem. Many new and more physically realistic collision models such as the Lennard-Jones potential and the forced harmonic oscillator model have been introduced into DSMC. However, the fact that computer resources are more readily available and higher-fidelity models have been developed does not …

A Contribution Toward Better Understanding Of Overbanking Tendency In Fixed-Wing Aircraft, Nihad E. Daidzic Feb 2015

A Contribution Toward Better Understanding Of Overbanking Tendency In Fixed-Wing Aircraft, Nihad E. Daidzic

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

The phenomenon of overbanking tendency for a rigid-body, fixed-wing aircraft is investigated. Overbanking tendency is defined as a spontaneous, unbalanced rolling moment that keeps increasing an airplane’s bank angle in steep turns and must be arrested by opposite aileron action. As stated by the Federal Aviation Administration, the overbanking tendency may lead to a loss of control, especially in instrument meteorological conditions. It was found in this study that the speed differential over wing halves in horizontal turns indeed creates a rolling moment that achieves maximum values for bank angles between 45 and 55 degrees. However, this induced rolling moment …

Waste And Duplication In Nasa Programs: The Need To Enhance U.S. Space Program Efficiency, Bert Chapman Feb 2015

Waste And Duplication In Nasa Programs: The Need To Enhance U.S. Space Program Efficiency, Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The U.S. Government faces acute budgetary deficits and national debt problems in the Obama Administration. These problems have been brought about by decades of unsustainable government spending affecting all agencies including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. (NASA). An outgrowth of this fiscal profligacy is the presence of wasteful and duplicative programs within NASA that prevent this agency from achieving its space science and human spaceflight objectives. These problems occur due to mismanagement of these programs from NASA and the creation of these programs by the U.S. Congress and congressional committees. This occurs because congressional appropriators tend to be more …

Studies Of Systems With Nonholonomic Constraints: The Segway And The Chaplygin Sleigh, Joseph Troy Lee Tuttle Oct 2014

Studies Of Systems With Nonholonomic Constraints: The Segway And The Chaplygin Sleigh, Joseph Troy Lee Tuttle

Open Access Theses

In this thesis, two systems with nonholonomic systems are investigated: the Segway and the Chaplygin sleigh. Using Lagrangian mechanics, the constrained nonlinear equations of motion for both systems are derived. By use of the nullspace of the constraint matrices, the unconstrained equations of motion can be obtained. For the Segway, these equations are linearized about a zero equilibrium state, placed into state space form and decoupled. A feedback controller is designed about the velocity and heading angle rate reference commands. To compare to the real data from the built Segway, measurement noise was also included in the model. Experimental data …

Measurements Of Entropy-Layer Instabilities Over Cone-Ogive-Cylinders At Mach 6, Roger T Greenwood Oct 2014

Measurements Of Entropy-Layer Instabilities Over Cone-Ogive-Cylinders At Mach 6, Roger T Greenwood

Open Access Dissertations

Predicting the onset of boundary layer transition is critical in hypersonic flight. To improve transition prediction methods, it is necessary to understand the underlying instability mechanisms that cause transition. Entropy-layer instabilities are of particular interest in the design of blunt reentry vehicles and other blunt supersonic and hypersonic vehicles. Entropy-layer instabilities from outside the boundary layer may enter the boundary layer and have a significant effect on transition. There is little experimental data for entropy-layer instabilities. ^ Experimental measurements of what appear to be entropy-layer instabilities have been made in the Boeing/AFOSR Mach-6 Quiet Tunnel (BAM6QT) using surface pressure transducers …

A Computational Analysis Of The Aerodynamic And Aeromechanical Behavior Of The Purdue Multistage Compressor, David Monk Oct 2014

A Computational Analysis Of The Aerodynamic And Aeromechanical Behavior Of The Purdue Multistage Compressor, David Monk

Open Access Theses

Compressor design programs are becoming more reliant on computational tools to predict and optimize aerodynamic and aeromechanical behavior within a compressor. Recent trends in compressor development continue to push for more efficient, lighter weight, and higher performance machines. To meet these demands, designers must better understand the complex nature of the inherently unsteady flow physics inside of a compressor. As physical testing can be costly and time prohibitive, CFD and other computational tools have become the workhorse during design programs.

The objectives of this research were to investigate the aerodynamic and aeromechanical behavior of the Purdue multistage compressor, as well …

Solid Amine-Boranes As High Performance Hypergolic Hybrid Rocket Fuels, Mark A. Pfeil Oct 2014

Solid Amine-Boranes As High Performance Hypergolic Hybrid Rocket Fuels, Mark A. Pfeil

Open Access Dissertations

Hypergolic hybrid rockets have the potential of providing systems that are simple, reliable, have high performance, and allow for energy management. Such a propulsion system can be applied to fields that need a single tactical motor with flexible mission requirements of either high speed to target or extended loitering. They also provide the possibility for alternative fast response dynamic altitude control systems if ignition delays are sufficiently short. ^ Amines are the traditional fuel of choice when selecting a hypergolic combination as these tend to react readily with both nitric acid and dinitrogen tertroxide based oxidizers. It has been found …

Augmented Reality Application Utility For Aviation Maintenance Work Instruction, John Bryan Pourcho Oct 2014

Augmented Reality Application Utility For Aviation Maintenance Work Instruction, John Bryan Pourcho

Open Access Theses

Current aviation maintenance work instructions do not display information effectively enough to prevent costly errors and safety concerns. Aircraft are complex assemblies of highly interrelated components that confound troubleshooting and can make the maintenance procedure difficult (Drury & Gramopadhye, 2001). The sophisticated nature of aircraft maintenance necessitates a revolutionized training intervention for aviation maintenance technicians (United States General Accounting Office, 2003). Quite simply, the paper based job task cards fall short of offering rapid access to technical data and the system or component visualization necessary for working on complex integrated aircraft systems. Possible solutions to this problem include upgraded standards …

Rapid Indirect Trajectory Optimization On Highly Parallel Computing Architectures, Thomas Antony Oct 2014

Rapid Indirect Trajectory Optimization On Highly Parallel Computing Architectures, Thomas Antony

Open Access Theses

Trajectory optimization is a field which can benefit greatly from the advantages offered by parallel computing. The current state-of-the-art in trajectory optimization focuses on the use of direct optimization methods, such as the pseudo-spectral method. These methods are favored due to their ease of implementation and large convergence regions while indirect methods have largely been ignored in the literature in the past decade except for specific applications in astrodynamics. It has been shown that the shortcomings conventionally associated with indirect methods can be overcome by the use of a continuation method in which complex trajectory solutions are obtained by solving …

A Dynamic Stochastic Model For Converging Inbound Air Traffic, Jun Chen Oct 2014

A Dynamic Stochastic Model For Converging Inbound Air Traffic, Jun Chen

Open Access Theses

Weather accounts for the majority of congestion in the National Airspace System which highlights the importance of addressing weather uncertainty to mitigate delays, and this paper presents an effort in this direction. Firstly, a new dynamic stochastic 0-1 Integer Programming (IP) model is proposed, which models the Single Airport Ground Holding Problem (SAGHP) with respect to uncertainty in the separation between flights instead of Airport Acceptance Rate (AAR) or landing capacity. Uncertainty in separation according to different weather conditions is represented through the scenario tree by using stochastic linear programming. Considering time separation constraints instead of AAR constraints, our model …

Digital Image Correlation Of Heterogeneous Deformations In Polycrystalline Material With Electron Backscatter Diffraction, Javier Esquivel

Open Access Theses

This work establishes the ability to conduct digital image correlation (DIC) investigations at varying length scales. DIC allows for a computational method of strain field measurements using multiple images to track random speckle patterns on material surfaces. The use of a powder silicon oxide speckle allows for high optical magnification correlation using conventional load frames. Self-assembling gold nanoparticles provide sub-micron resolution speckle patterns to study microstructure influences on deformation using scanning electron microscopy. The complex microstructure in aerospace grade aluminum and nickel-based superalloys, give rise to varied deformation fields, which can be studied using electron backscatter diffraction. Specimen preparation techniques, …

Principle Of Bio-Inspired Insect Wing Rotational Hinge Design, Fan Fei

Open Access Theses

A principle for designing and fabricating bio-inspired miniature artificial insect flapping wing using flexure rotational hinge design is presented. A systematic approach of selecting rotational hinge stiffness value is proposed. Based on the understanding of flapping wing aerodynamics, a dynamic simulation is constructed using the established quasi-steady model and the wing design. Simulations were performed to gain insight on how different parameters affect the wing rotational response. Based on system resonance a model to predict the optimal rotational hinge stiffness based on given wing parameter and flapping wing kinematic is proposed. By varying different wing parameters, the proposed method is …

Distinguishing Harmonic Behavior Of Longitudinal Resonant Combustion In A Variable Geometry Model Rocket Combustor, Sarah W. Hester Oct 2014

Distinguishing Harmonic Behavior Of Longitudinal Resonant Combustion In A Variable Geometry Model Rocket Combustor, Sarah W. Hester

Open Access Theses

Throughout the study of high frequency combustion instability in a single element Continuously Variable Resonance Combustor (CVRC), the excitation of the fundamental longitudinal mode is closely followed by the excitation of higher harmonic modes. In an attempt to establish a heuristic relationship between the appearances of the fundamental mode and its harmonics, several unstable fixed geometry and variable geometry tests from the CVRC are analyzed through traditional Fourier-based methods and alternative signal processing methods such as wavelet analysis and Instantaneous Frequency (IF) Analysis from PC Signal Analysis. Early results led to the conclusion that traditional Fourier-based analysis provides believable and …

Joint Architecture For Reusable Vehicle-Integrated Software (J.A.R.V.I.S), Anthony Mark Kane

Open Access Theses

An integrated software architecture for development of unmanned research vehicles is developed. It has been created under the premise that all unmanned vehicles require a core set of functionality that is common across platforms and that priority should be to the readability and reusability of the code base. The architecture defines the top-level system interfaces allowing internal algorithms to be manipulated without affecting the rest of the system. A robust aerospace toolbox has been developed that provides a means to rapidly prototype algorithms without the need of recreating commonly used functions or the use of expensive, proprietary software.

Mode I Fatigue Delamination Onset Of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer With Novel Post-Cure Throughthickness Reinforcement, Christopher John Kourloufas

Open Access Theses

A novel trough thickness reinforcement (TTR) technique, proposed by Kravchenko et al., has been tested under mode I fatigue loading conditions in order to investigate characterisation of the onset of delamination growth in unidirectional 8552/IM7. The experimental results, following standard test method ASTM D6115-13, indicate that the mode I fatigue delamination onset behaviour can be altered by the inclusion of TTR both ahead and behind the crack tip. Tests have been conducted at a wide range of maximum displacement values, corresponding to percentages of the critical fracture toughness value determined for the maternal, GIC . The results were found …

Evaluating Intensity As A Controller Function For Nextgen Scenarios With Increased Capacity, Caitlin Anne Surakitbanharn Oct 2014

Evaluating Intensity As A Controller Function For Nextgen Scenarios With Increased Capacity, Caitlin Anne Surakitbanharn

Open Access Theses

Automated separation assurance is the most mature concept to handle increasing airspace traffic and capacity needs, yet the system lacks a way to pre-emptively identify aircraft separation problems. The intensity control measure looks to find situations where if an aircraft pair makes an unplanned change in heading or altitude at the wrong moment, an unrecoverable situation arises. This research analyzes static, open loop air traffic data in an en-route sector to determine how many high intensity aircraft pairs (HIP) exist per minute, and if the intensity measure is a safely manageable function for air traffic controllers. It is found that …

Coupled Fluid-Thermal Analysis Of Low-Pressure Sublimation And Condensation With Application To Freeze-Drying, Arnab Ganguly Oct 2014

Coupled Fluid-Thermal Analysis Of Low-Pressure Sublimation And Condensation With Application To Freeze-Drying, Arnab Ganguly

Open Access Dissertations

Freeze-drying is a low-pressure, low-temperature condensation pumping process widely used in the manufacture of bio-pharmaceuticals for removal of solvents by sublimation. The goal of the process is to provide a stable dosage form by removing the solvent in such a way that the sensitive molecular structure of the active substance is least disturbed. The vacuum environment presents unique challenges for understanding and controlling heat and mass transfer in the process. As a result, the design of equipment and associated processes has been largely empirical, slow and inefficient.^ A comprehensive simulation framework to predict both, process and equipment performance is critical …

Analysis Of The Interaction Of Two Parallel Surface Cracks, Jeeyeon Hahn Oct 2014

Analysis Of The Interaction Of Two Parallel Surface Cracks, Jeeyeon Hahn

Open Access Dissertations

The objective of this research is to analyze and predict the interaction of surface cracks that occur in parallel planes. Multiple cracks may form in aging aircraft that forms at stress concentrations such as fastener holes and notched components by stress corrosion and fatigue cracking. The lifetime of the structures are significantly affected by the interaction between these cracks. Depending on relative positions and orientations of neighboring cracks, local stress fields and crack driving forces can be affected by the presence of adjacent cracks. Even small subcritical cracks may rapidly grow to a size that will cause failure in service …

Trajectory Design In The Spatial Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem Exploiting Higher-Dimensional Poincare Maps, Amanda F. Haapala Oct 2014

Trajectory Design In The Spatial Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem Exploiting Higher-Dimensional Poincare Maps, Amanda F. Haapala

Open Access Dissertations

In this investigation, the role of higher-dimensional Poincaré maps in facilitating trajectory design is explored for a variety of applications. To begin, existing strategies to implement Poincaré maps for trajectory design applications in the spatial CR3BP are evaluated. New applications for these strategies are explored, including an analysis of the natural motion of Jupiter-family comets that experience temporary capture about Jupiter, and the search for periodic orbits in the vicinity of the primary bodies in the spatial problem. Because current strategies to represent higher-dimensional maps, generally, lead to a loss of information, new approaches to represent all information contained in …

Measurement Of Combustion Response To Transverse Modes At High Pressure, Matthew Kenneth Wierman Oct 2014

Measurement Of Combustion Response To Transverse Modes At High Pressure, Matthew Kenneth Wierman

Open Access Dissertations

A two dimensional transverse combustor capable of producing and modulating an unstable flowfield was tested at Purdue. The combustor used an array of coaxial ox-centered shear injector elements. The oxidizer posts were able to be discretely changed in length between tests to investigate different post resonance conditions. A single Study element was placed in the middle of the driven unsteady flowfield so its response could be measured using pressure measurement and high speed imagery. This approach was supported by past testing of the longitudinal Continuously Variable Resonance Combustor and past transverse chambers. Mean flow rates and pressures were fixed across …

Crossflow Instability And Transition On A Circular Cone At Angle Of Attack In A Mach-6 Quiet Tunnel, Christopher A. C Ward Oct 2014

Crossflow Instability And Transition On A Circular Cone At Angle Of Attack In A Mach-6 Quiet Tunnel, Christopher A. C Ward

Open Access Dissertations

To investigate the effect of roughness on the stationary crossflow vortices, roughness elements 2 inches from the nosetip were created in a Torlon insert section of a 7-deg half-angle cone at 6-deg angle of attack in the Boeing/AFOSR Mach-6 Quiet Tunnel. Roughness elements with depths and diameters on the order of 500 microns were found to have a significant effect on the generation of the stationary vortices and the location of crossflow-induced transition under quiet flow. Crossflow-induced transition was measured under fully quiet flow. The controlled roughness elements also appeared to dominate the generation of the vortices, overwhelming the effect …

Applications Of Femtosecond Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering In Combustion, Claresta Nicole Dennis Oct 2014

Applications Of Femtosecond Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering In Combustion, Claresta Nicole Dennis

Open Access Dissertations

The dissertation deals with the further development of chirped-probe-pulse femtosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CPP fs-CARS) for applications of gas phase thermometry and extension to methane concentration measurements. The main effort has been to assess the usefulness and robustness of the technique in turbulent combustors of practical interest. A primary aim has been to evaluate the use of CPP fs-CARS for vibrational N2 thermometry in a highly turbulent environment. It has been suggested that due to the laser beam temporal overlap required for fs-CARS signal generation, the technique would be unsuccessful due to beam propagation retardation effects from density …

Investigation Of Condensed And Early Stage Gas Phase Hypergolic Reactions, Jacob Daniel Dennis Oct 2014

Investigation Of Condensed And Early Stage Gas Phase Hypergolic Reactions, Jacob Daniel Dennis

Open Access Dissertations

Traditional hypergolic propellant combinations, such as those used on the space shuttle orbital maneuvering system first flown in 1981, feature hydrazine based fuels and nitrogen tetroxide (NTO) based oxidizers. Despite the long history of hypergolic propellant implementation, the processes that govern hypergolic ignition are not well understood. In order to achieve ignition, condensed phase fuel and oxidizer must undergo simultaneous physical mixing and chemical reaction. This process generates heat, intermediate condensed phase species, and gas phase species, which then may continue to react and generate more heat until ignition is achieved. The process is not well understood because condensed and …
