Throughout the evolution of high performance racing, a large emphasis has been on reducing the weight of the vehicle in order to improve its performance. Over the years, new designs and materials have been introduced reducing weight in a variety of different locations. Comparing weight reduced in different areas has shown that some areas are more valuable to reduce than others are. Perhaps one of the most beneficial locations are the wheels. This is because the mass of the wheel is considered unsprung and rotational. Because of this, large improvements towards the reduction of wheel mass have been developed in …

Optimization Of Heat Sinks In A Range Of Configurations., Archibald Allswell Amoako
Optimization Of Heat Sinks In A Range Of Configurations., Archibald Allswell Amoako
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study, different heatsink geometries used for electronic cooling are studied and compared to each other to determine the most efficient. The goal is to optimize heat transfer of the heat sinks studied in a range of configuration based on fin geometry. Heat sinks are thermal conductive material devices designed to absorb and disperse heat from high-temperature objects (e.g. Computer CPU). Common materials used in the manufacturing of heat sinks are aluminum and copper due to their relatively high thermal conductivity and lightweight [1]. Aluminum is used as the material for the heatsinks studied in this research project. To …
The Impact Of Functional Modeling On Engineering Students' Mental Models, Jacob T. Nelson
The Impact Of Functional Modeling On Engineering Students' Mental Models, Jacob T. Nelson
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The ability to understand complexity and think holistically about systems is an increasingly important part of engineering design. This is embodied in the concept of systems thinking, a concept studied primarily in the fields of systems dynamics and systems engineering. Systems thinking ability is built off mental models, a loosely-defined construct people form to make predictions about their surroundings. Methods to evaluate systems thinking and underlying mental models rely primarily on self-evaluative methods such as questionnaires, or detailed simulations of systems or processes; however these methods fail to directly capture students’ design tendencies. This work presents a visual instrument used …
Engineering Identity Development: A Review Of Higher Education Literature, Sarah L. Rodriguez, Charles Lu, Morgan Bartlett
Engineering Identity Development: A Review Of Higher Education Literature, Sarah L. Rodriguez, Charles Lu, Morgan Bartlett
Faculty Publications
The purpose of this systematic literature review was to appraise and synthesize the current scholarship pertaining to engineering identity development within the higher education context and create recommendations for future scholarship within engineering education. A review of the literature concluded that research on engineering identity development has increased over the past ten years, has been conducted primarily with qualitative methods, and has been primarily limited to academic communities focused on mathematics, science, and engineering education. In addition, current scholarship reflected that most of the work in this area has focused on the learning contexts and experiences of women and underrepresented …

Laser based additive manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V components is under consideration for aerospace applications. The mechanical properties of the finished components depend on their microstructure. Process mapping compares process variables such as heat source power, heat source travel speed, material feed rate, part preheat temperature and feature geometry to process outcomes such as microstructure, melt pool geometry and residual stresses. In this work, the microstructure of two-dimensional pads, multilayer pads, thin walls, and structural components at the steady state location was observed. A method for measuring β grain widths that allows for the calculation of standard deviations, confidence intervals, and variances …

Wideband Doa And Parameter Estimation Of Chirp Sources Using Dcft And Compressive Sensing, Luay A. Al Irkhis
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Direction of Arrival (DoA) estimation of chirp sources has many applications in radar, sonar and medical imaging. This work considers DoA and parameter estimation of wide- band chirp sources by the use of Discrete Chirp Fourier Transform (DCFT), its Compres- sive Sensing formulation (CS-DCFT) and Distributed CS. DCFT is similar to traditional Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) but with chirp ba- sis and two-dimensional search over chirp rate and chirp frequency. For chirp parame- ters estimation, the proposed Compressive Sensing (CS) formulation uses the parametric DCFT basis to achieve superior estimator performance in polynomial time using Orthog- onal Matching Pursuit (OMP) …
