Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and head and neck (H&N) cancer is amongst the most prevalent types. Positron emission tomography and computed tomography are used to detect and segment the tumor region. Clinically, tumor segmentation is extensively time-consuming and prone to error. Machine learning, and deep learning in particular, can assist to automate this process, yielding results as accurate as the results of a clinician. In this research study, we develop a vision transformers-based method to automatically delineate H&N tumor, and compare its results to leading convolutional neural network (CNN)-based models. We use multi-modal data …

Glioblastoma is a common brain malignancy that tends to occur in older adults and is almost always lethal. The effectiveness of chemotherapy, being the standard treatment for most cancer types, can be improved if a particular genetic sequence in the tumor known as MGMT promoter is methylated. However, to identify the state of the MGMT promoter, the conventional approach is to perform a biopsy for genetic analysis, which is time and effort consuming. A couple of recent publications proposed a connection between the MGMT promoter state and the MRI scans of the tumor and hence suggested the use of deep …

To reduce the energy-intensity and carbon footprint of Portland cement (PC), the prevailing practice embraced by concrete technologists is to partially replace the PC in concrete with supplementary cementitious materials [SCMs: geological materials (e.g., limestone); industrial by-products (e.g., fly ash); and processed materials (e.g., calcined clay)]. Chemistry and content of the SCM profoundly affect PC hydration kinetics; which, in turn, dictates the evolutions of microstructure and properties of the [PC + SCM] binder. Owing to the substantial diversity in SCMs' compositions–plus the massive combinatorial spaces, and the highly nonlinear and mutually-interacting processes that arise from SCM-PC interactions–state-of-the-art computational models are …

ascular navigation is a prerequisite to transcatheter cardiac interventions. The current standard approach to catheter navigation relies on real-time fluoroscopy, while this technique utilizes ionizing radiation and it places the interventionalist at risk for eye cataracts and cancer. The shielding equipment needed to mitigate these risks is associated with spinal issues and neck and back pain which has led towards the coining of the term "interventionalist's disc disease". A proposed alternative is to have an ultrasound-guided vascular navigation system where a catheter-based ultrasound probe scans the vessel and reconstructs the vascular roadmap, which can then be navigated by tracked guidewire …

Bio-signals pattern recognition systems can be impacted by several factors with a potential to limit their associated performance and clinical translation. Among these factors, selecting the optimum feature extraction method, that can effectively exploit the interaction between the temporal and spatial information, is the most prominent. Despite the potential of deep learning (DL) models for extracting temporal, spatial, or temporal-spatial information, they are typically restricted by their need for a large amount of training data. The deep wavelet scattering transform (WST) is a relatively recent advancement within the DL literature to replace expensive convolution neural networks models with computationally less …

Deep Learning (DL) models have achieved or even surpassed human-level accuracy in several areas, including computer vision and pattern recognition. The state-of-art performance of DL models has raised the interest in using them in real-world applications, such as disease diagnosis and clinical decision support systems. However, the challenge remains the lack of trustworthiness and reliability of these DL models. The detection of incorrect decisions or flagging suspicious input samples is essential for the reliability of machine learning models. Uncertainty estimation in the output decision is a key component in establishing the trustworthiness and reliability of these models. In this work, …

The principal reason for measuring mental workload is to quantify the cognitive cost of performing tasks to predict human performance. Unfortunately, a method for assessing mental workload that has general applicability does not exist yet. This is due to the abundance of intuitions and several operational definitions from various fields that disagree about the sources or workload, its attributes, the mechanisms to aggregate these into a general model and their impact on human performance. This research built upon these issues and presents a novel method for mental workload modelling from EEG data employing deep learning. This method is self-supervised, employing …

Electronic Health records are an important part of a digital healthcare system. Due to their significance, electronic health records have become a major target for hackers, and hospitals/clinics prefer to keep the records at local sites protected by adequate security measures. This introduces challenges in sharing health records. Sharing health records however, is critical in building an accurate online diagnosis framework. Most local sites have small data sets, and machine learning models developed locally based on small data sets, do not have knowledge about other data sets and learning models used at other sites.

Autonomous robotic systems (ARS) serve in many areas of daily life. The sensors have critical importance for these systems. The sensor data obtained from the environment should be as accurate and reliable as possible and correctly interpreted by the autonomous robot. Since sensors have advantages and disadvantages over each other they should be used together to reduce errors. In this study, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based sensor fusion was applied to ARS to contribute the autonomous driving. In a real-time application, a camera and LIDAR sensor were tested with these networks. The novelty of this work is that the uniquely …
