Dementia and mild cognitive impairment are well recognized comorbidities of type 2 diabetes, termed diabetic encephalopathy, that lack in course modifying treatment options. The axon initial segment (AIS) is a critical mediator of neuronal output. Shortening of AIS length has been shown to decrease neuronal excitability and is implicated in diabetic encephalopathy. AIS shortening may be reversible, hence investigating the mechanism responsible could address this significant gap in patient care by providing new therapeutic targets. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, a cellular condition that activates the unfolded protein response has been implicated in diabetic encephalopathy. Here, using immunocytochemistry in primary mouse …

Programming by demonstration (PbD) is a promising method for robots to learn from direct, non-expert human interaction. This approach enables the interactive transfer of human skills to the robot. As the non-expert user is at the center of PbD, the efficacy of the learned skill is largely dependent on the demonstrations provided. Although PbD methods have been extensively developed and validated in the field of robotics, there has been inadequate confirmation of their effectiveness from the perspective of human teachability. To address this gap, we propose to experimentally investigate the impact of communicating robot learning process on the efficacy of …
Self-Diffusion In Misoriented Aluminum (111) Substrates After Jump-To-Contact, Noah Kane Manuel
Self-Diffusion In Misoriented Aluminum (111) Substrates After Jump-To-Contact, Noah Kane Manuel
Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses
Self-diffusion between misoriented aluminum (111) substrates after jump-to-contact (JC) is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. Diffusive behaviors of three twist misorientation angles, 2.45°, 4.40° and 6.00°, are studied at temperatures ranging from 75% to 95% of the melting temperature of aluminum. The existence of the post-JC interface is found to enhance diffusive behavior of atoms near the interface. The 4.40° misorientation angle has the highest pre-exponential factor of diffusion and the lowest activation energy, when compared to the other angles. For all misorientations the activation energies in the direction perpendicular to the JC interface was found to be the lowest. …

Identifying the version of the Solidity compiler used to create an Ethereum contract is a challenging task, especially when the contract bytecode is obfuscated and lacks explicit metadata. Ethereum bytecode is highly complex, as it is generated by the Solidity compiler, which translates high-level programming constructs into low-level, stack-based code. Additionally, the Solidity compiler undergoes frequent updates and modifications, resulting in continuous evolution of bytecode patterns. To address this challenge, we propose using deep learning models to analyze Ethereum bytecodes and infer the compiler version that produced them. A large number of Ethereum contracts and the corresponding compiler versions is …

Radar cross section (RCS) of electrically large targets can be challenging and expensive to measure. The use of scale models to predict the RCS of such large targets saves time and reduces facility requirements. This study investigates Ka-band (27 to 29 GHz) RCS prediction from scale model measurements at 500 to 750 GHz. Firstly, the coherent quasi-monostatic turntable RCS measurement system is demonstrated. Secondly, three aluminum 18:1 scale dihedrals with surface roughness up to 218 icroinches are measured to investigate how the roughness affects the Ka-band prediction. The measurements are compared to a parametric scattering model for the specular response, …

Water is a universal right for all living beings on the planet, but today it has become a commercial good. It costs significantly to extract water from increasingly distant storage sources. For these reasons and many more the fight for water has become increasingly intense. Precisely, an alternative to avoid more dam construction is the implementation of public politic with actions focused on the integral solution of water, that is to say, that it be distributed fairly and equitably to all users, avoiding more concessions to great industries like as soft drinks and breweries, which are the main consumers and …

MBFL (Mutation-Based Fault Localization) is one of the most commonly studied fault localization techniques due to its promising fault localization effectiveness. However, MBFL incurs a high execution cost as it needs to execute the test suite on a large number of mutants. While previous studies have proposed mutant reduction methods for FOMs (First-Order Mutants) to help alleviate the cost of MBFL, the reduction of HOMs (Higher-Order Mutants) has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we propose SGS (Statement Granularity Sampling), a method which conducts HOMs reduction for HMBFL (Higher-Order Mutation-Based Fault Localization). Considering the relationship between HOMs and statements, …

Engineering projects are ubiquitous; from developing COVID-19 vaccines to building new cities and developing climate change solutions. An inclusive approach to teaching engineers how to master the complexities of engineering project management is vital to the deliverability of sustainability and net zero initiatives (Hockings 2010). Yet, our engineering curricula remain deeply rooted in Western epistemology (Winter et al. 2022, Mbembe 2015). Arguably, this is an opportune time to consider decolonising our curricula. At a fundamental level, ‘decolonising the curriculum’ means introducing previously ignored voices, images, authors, theories and arguments into our teaching (Rogers et al. 2022). This is a challenge …

Higher educational institutions have broadly adopted Collaborative Engineering Design (CED) activities to prepare students for complex problem-solving in multidisciplinary settings. These activities are non-linear and mediated by various social practices and tools. Therefore educators might struggle in facilitating the achievement of specific learning goals. Embodied cognition is an approach that explains non-linear behaviour through orgamism-environment interactions and might therefore provide educators with insights on how to prompt students towards desired actions in CED activities. According to embodied cognition, we learn through actions that emerge as a response to a problem (task) and environmental constraints. Educators can guide students’ behaviour by …

This work accompanies another paper which describes interpretivist qualitative research that made use of data from semi-structured interviews pertaining to how engineering educators conceptualize resilience and support students in its development. In that work, we utilized reflexive thematic analysis (RTA) for several reasons. Firstly, it is considered a useful method for under-researched areas. Secondly, its flexibility allows for inductive and deductive theme generation. Finally, it is considered a reasonably accessible method which we believe is important when considering 1.) the varied audience of engineering education research (EER) and 2.) the relative lack of consensus as to acceptable theoretical frameworks or …

Engineers need to be socially responsible, ethically aware and deliver positive contributions to the wicked problems2 of today's global challenges. In navigating these challenges, being able to reflect is a necessary prerequisite. But if we simply ask students reflective questions, they tend to give us mostly socially desirable answers. Our university initiated an institute-wide program focused on creating learning experiences and environments for transformative reflection instead of superficial reflection. In this paper we present design principles for transformative reflection based on a literature overview and the program's accumulated experience. The principles are I) Six domains for reflection on engineering issues, …
