A Simulation Study Of Surfactant/Foam Processes In Shallow Subsurface Remediation: Using Foams For Mobility Control Vs. Blockage, Betty Cepeda

LSU Master's Theses

Many shallow ex-situ and in-situ remediation treatments come from the contamination of underground soils and groundwater sources by organic hydrocarbon components called non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs). These contaminants, if leaking, can impose long-term threats causing environmental and health concerns. One of the versatile in-situ remediation techniques is using surfactant/foam processes that can overcome subsurface heterogeneity and improve NAPL removal.

This simulation study investigates surfactant/foam processes, especially focusing on two different roles of foams during the treatment: foams for “mobility control” vs. foams for “blocking”. The first is based on the actual operations carried out in the pilot-test site for 23 …

Photolysis Of 3-Nitro-1,2,4-Triazol-5-One: Mechanisms And Products, Hunter W. Schroer, Esteban Londono, Xueshu Li, Hans Joachim Lehmler, William Arnold, Craig L. Just

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Insensitive munitions formulations that include 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) are replacing traditional explosive compounds. While these new formulations have superior safety characteristics, the compounds have greater environmental mobility, raising concern over potential contamination and cleanup of training and manufacturing facilities. Here, we examine the mechanisms and products of NTO photolysis in simulated sunlight to further inform NTO degradation in sunlit surface waters. We demonstrate that NTO produces singlet oxygen, and that dissolved oxygen increases the NTO photolysis rate in deionized water. The rate of NTO photolysis is independent of concentration and decreases slightly in the presence of Suwannee River Natural Organic Matter. …

Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Meniscal tears are a common, painful, and debilitating knee injury with limited treatment options. Computational models that predict meniscal tears may help advance injury prevention and repair, but first these models must be validated using experimental data. Here we simulated meniscal tears with finite element analysis using continuum damage mechanics (CDM) in a transversely isotropic hyperelastic material. Finite element models were built to recreate the coupon geometry and loading conditions of forty uniaxial tensile experiments of human meniscus that were pulled to failure either parallel or perpendicular to the preferred fiber orientation. Two damage criteria were evaluated for all experiments: …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

In this article, we presented a ranking system based on the sign distance in a new direction, such that to compare different single-valued neutrosophic numbers (SVN-numbers), a decision maker has the chance of flexibility. We also developed some important definitions, like level-(α,β,γ) neutrosophic point, and some properties related to the sign distance ranking function. Finally, the sign distance ranking function is applied to solving the neutrosophic transportation problem (NTP) with SVN-number converted into a transportation problem (TP) with crisp data, and to illustrate the appropriateness of this function, we gave two numerical illustrations.

Purpose: Machining is a manufacturing process for making the desired design with dimensional tolerance and surface roughness. Despite the development of engineering technology, predicting machined surface roughness is still challenging since there are various factors, such as material properties, tool material properties, the rigidity of the machine tool, and the use of coolant. In particular, tool vibration is the most critical factor since it makes it challenging to obtain the desired quality of the machined product by unintentionally making a tool move. Therefore, surface finish was explored in this study, considering cutting tool vibration under various axial depth-of-cuts and feed …

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Optimization Techniques For Energy And Socioeconomic Systems, Salman Sadiq Shuvo Mar 2023

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Optimization Techniques For Energy And Socioeconomic Systems, Salman Sadiq Shuvo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Optimization, which refers to making the best or most out of a system, is critical for an organization's strategic planning. Optimization theories and techniques aim to find the optimal solution that maximizes/minimizes the values of an objective function within a set of constraints. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) is a popular Machine Learning technique for optimization and resource allocation tasks. Unlike the supervised ML that trains on labeled data, DRL techniques require a simulated environment to capture the stochasticity of real-world complex systems. This uncertainty in future transitions makes the planning authorities doubt real-world implementation success. Furthermore, the DRL methods have …

Low-Power Redundant-Transition-Free Tspc Dual-Edge-Triggering Flip-Flop Using Single-Transistor-Clocked Buffer, Zisong Wang, Peiyi Zhao, Tom Springer, Congyi Zhu, Jaccob Mau, Andrew Wells, Yinshui Xia, Lingli Wang

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

In the modern graphics processing unit (GPU)/artificial intelligence (AI) era, flip-flop (FF) has become one of the most power-hungry blocks in processors. To address this issue, a novel single-phase-clock dual-edge-triggering (DET) FF using a single-transistor-clocked (STC) buffer (STCB) is proposed. The STCB uses a single-clocked transistor in the data sampling path, which completely removes clock redundant transitions (RTs) and internal RTs that exist in other DET designs. Verified by post-layout simulations in 22 nm fully depleted silicon on insulator (FD-SOI) CMOS, when operating at 10% switching activity, the proposed STC-DET outperforms prior state-of-the-art low-power DET in power consumption by 14% …

Bipolar electrochemistry (BPE) is a technique that provides a wireless alternative totraditional electrochemistry to elicit redox reactions. It has been utilized in different applications, including studying localized corrosion, gradient electrodeposition, propulsion of micromotors, and water treatment. The popularity of the method is not solely dependent on its wirelessness but more due to the simultaneous presence of cathodic and anodic poles on the same surface, which also begets its name as bipolar. The concept of the method is based on the polarization of conductive objects in an electric field in the presence of an electrolyte. In BPE, instead of controlling the …

Lead-Free Perovskite Homojunction-Based Htm-Free Perovskite Solar Cells: Theoretical And Experimental Viewpoints, Sajid Sajid, Salem Alzahmi, Imen Ben Salem, Jongee Park, Ihab M. Obaidat

All Works

Simplifying the design of lead-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has drawn a lot of interest due to their low manufacturing cost and relative non-toxic nature. Focus has been placed mostly on reducing the toxic lead element and eliminating the requirement for expensive hole transport materials (HTMs). However, in terms of power conversion efficiency (PCE), the PSCs using all charge transport materials surpass the environmentally beneficial HTM-free PSCs. The low PCEs of the lead-free HTM-free PSCs could be linked to poorer hole transport and extraction as well as lower light harvesting. In this context, a lead-free perovskite homojunction-based HTM-free PSC was …

On The Modeling Of A Contact-Aided Cross-Axis Flexural Pivot, Pietro Bilancia, Giovanni Berselli, Spencer P. Magleby, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

This paper reports the study of a planar Cross-Axis Flexural Pivot (CAFP) comprising an additional contact pair. The proposed device turns useful for applications requiring a revolute joint that behaves differently when deflecting clockwise/anti-clockwise. The presence of the contact pair reduces the free length of one flexures, resulting in a considerable increment of the overall joint stiffness. The pivot behaviour is investigated, for different load cases, via the ChainedBeam-Constraint Model (CBCM), namely an accurate method to be applied in large deflection problems. A framework comprising Matlab and ANSYS is developed for testing the CAFP performances in terms of rotational stiffness, …

Kinetostatic And Dynamic Modeling Of Flexure-Based Compliant Mechanisms: A Survey, Mingxiang Ling, Larry L. Howell, Junyi Cao, Guimin Chen

Faculty Publications

Flexure-based compliant mechanisms are becoming increasingly promising in precision engineering, robotics and other applications due to the excellent advantages of no friction, no backlash, no wear, and minimal requirement of assembly. Because compliant mechanisms have inherent coupling of kinematic- mechanical behaviors with large deflections and/or complex serial-parallel configurations, the kinetostatic and dynamic analyses are challenging in comparison to their rigid-body counterparts. To address these challenges, a variety of techniques have been reported in a growing stream of publications. This paper surveys and compares the conceptual ideas, key advances, applicable scopes and open problems of the state-of-the-art kinetostatic and dynamic modeling …
