Effects Of Various Dietary Carbohydrate Sources On The Growth Performance And Body Composition Of The Dog Conch, Laevistrombus Canarium, Jen-Hong Chu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study investigates the effects of dietary supplementation with various carbohydrate sources on the growth and dietary nutrient utilization efficiency of a 0.72-g dog conch, Laevistrombus canarium. Five treatment diets had supplementation with alpha-starch (Sta), dextrin (Dex), pullulan gum (Pg), xanthan gum (Xg), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). At the end of the feeding trial, the best growth performance (weight gain, 442.23%) and diet efficiency (protein efficiency ratio, 1.25, and feed conversion ratio [FCR], 2.04) were exhibited by the dog conch fed the Sta diet, whereas the lowest growth performance was observed in the dog conch fed the Xg and CMC …
Cost Advantages Of Far East/Europe Trunk Route Deployment With Port Selection In East Asia, Tai Hui-Huang, Chang Chin-Wei
Cost Advantages Of Far East/Europe Trunk Route Deployment With Port Selection In East Asia, Tai Hui-Huang, Chang Chin-Wei
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
To cater to the gradually increasing sizes of ships, several traditional container ports in East Asia built deep-water wharves to attract shipping carriers to berth, a decision that is considered highly reasonable because it allows for shipping carriers to gain a cost advantage. For traditional Far East/Europe (F/E) trunk routes, shipping carriers must deploy vessels that are large enough at hub ports to maintain low transshipment costs. However, for a port to attract shipping carriers, it should be able to first meet the cargo demand of these carriers. The port would also need to improve the loading ratio to enjoy …

Influence Of Vacuum Condition On Rapid Chloride Migration (Rcm) Test For Chloride Penetration Resistance Of Concrete, Chih-Yen Lin, Chun-Fu Chang, Chung-Chia Yang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
NT Build 492 regulates that the pressure be set at 7.5–37.5 torr and be maintained for 3 h for vacuum processing. This large range of acceptable vacuum pressure is awkward for research, and 3 h of pump-down time may be excessive. In this study, vacuum conditions were divided into vacuum pressure and pump-down time groups: various vacuum pressures and pump-down times were used to preprocess specimens to explore the effect of vacuum conditions on the RCM test. The salt ponding test was also conducted to identify the optimal vacuum conditions. It is shown that the relationship between vacuum pressure and …

Exhaust Noise Elimination Using Silencers Fortified With Perforated Tubes, Extended Tubes, Penetrable Resin Inlet And Orifice Plate, Min-Chie Chiu, Ho-Chih Cheng
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Pneumatic equipment in marine diesel engine and associated piping system often emit extremely high level of noises when releasing pressure. Concerning the crew’s hearing health, discovering an efficient noise silencing device becomes essential. A silencer fortified with extended tubes, perforated tubes, orifice plate, and penetrable resin inlet is presented in order to competently dampen the blown-up noises. A simplified objective function by means of FEM, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), and a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is established to enable the numerical calculation when using a finite element method. Three silencer designs, silencer A (with element A, a penetrable resin inlet), B …

Deep Learning–Based, Oceantdlx Sea Ice Detection Model For Sar Image, Liu Lin, Li Wanwu, Li Hang, Sun Yi
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study constructs four deep-learning OceanTDLx series models and uses a WinR-AdaGrad gradient descent algorithm to train and optimize the constructed models. Through an analysis of the loss, accuracy, and time consumption of the four models (i.e., OceanTDL2, OceanTDL3, OceanTDL5 and OceanTDL8), we reveal that the models’ performance does not improve when the number of layers is increased and that OceanTDL5 provides the optimal performance. OceanTDL5 is compared with OceanTDA9 (a model that we previously constructed), and the curves for training loss_batch and training accuracy_batch indicate that OceanTDL5 is more suitable than OceanTDA9 for detecting distributed targets, particularly semi-melted sea …

Application Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle–Based Infrared Images In Determining Characteristics Of Sea Surface Temperature Distribution, Hsing-Yu Wang, Hui-Ming Fang, Yun-Chih Chiang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study investigated the temperature field of a body of water by using rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual) comprising visible light and infrared cameras to determine sea temperature distribution. With a flight height of 150 m, image overlap of 80%, and image resolution of 4.75 cm/pixel, the proposed method was more effective than the conventional portable conductivity–temperature–depth device in rapidly measuring sea surface temperature and determining sea temperature distribution. The discharged heated water of the Hoping Power Plant traveled 100–330 m from the wastewater outfall and then gradually diffused in the range of 100–490 m before …

Combustion Of Scrap Waste Tires Of A Cogeneration Plant, Chin-Ko Yeh, Rong-Hua Yeh
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Various fuels can be used in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers. In this study, the thermal and economic performance was investigated for three CFB fuels—heavy fuel oil, coal, and waste tire scraps—used in a cogeneration plant. The plant comprised a CFB boiler, a single-cylinder steam-extraction turbine, and a generator. Tire scrap combustion generated the most power per ton during peak hours: approximately 27.5% more than that generated using heavy oil and 42.3% more than when coal was employed; it also resulted in higher boiler efficiency during peak operation than coal (1.2% higher) or heavy oil (12.6% higher). The net plant …

Decellularized Heart Extracellular Matrix As A Biomimetic Substrate For Alleviating Hipsc-Cardiac Fibroblast Activation And Enhancing Isogenic Cardiac Organoids, Charles Kerr
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular disease is the constant leading cause of death worldwide. While substantial efforts have been undertaken to improve disease outcomes, the lack of adequate human cardiac tissue models exacerbates research and development costs and clinical trial failures, hampering novel therapeutic discovery. To address this, human engineered cardiac microtissues composed of human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CM) show potential in recapitulating hallmark qualities of natural human myocardium for novel therapeutic testing, disease modeling and cardiotoxicity screening. However, as these models are engineered in vitro, they are limited in their capacity to fully recapitulate myocardium and are vulnerable to influences …

Pamam- Cyclodextrin Conjugate Upregulates Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor In Arpe-19 Cells, Gopika Ashokan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a major contributor to death and disability due to motorvehicle accidents, sports, physical abuse, and battlefield injuries. The primary insult to the brain leads to inflammation, vascular dysfunction, and oxidative stress in the brain as well as in the eye. This leads to loss of Retinal Ganglion Cells (RGCs) and downregulation of Brain derived Neurotopic Factor (BDNF). BDNF is a neurotrophic factor that binds to Tropomyosin Receptor Kinase B (TrkB) receptor to promote cell growth, survival, and differentiation. Current treatment strategies do not promote neuronal regeneration. Therefore, novel treatments are needed to restore vision …
Improved Selectivity And Stability In Methane Dry Reforming By Atomic Layer Deposition Onto Ni-Ceo2-Zro2/Al2o3 Catalysts, Jonathan Lucas
Improved Selectivity And Stability In Methane Dry Reforming By Atomic Layer Deposition Onto Ni-Ceo2-Zro2/Al2o3 Catalysts, Jonathan Lucas
LSU Master's Theses
The use of Ni in the dry reforming of methane (DRM) has been widely studied as a replacement for noble metal catalysts (Pt, Pd, Rh) due to Ni’s low cost compared to noble metals, its abundance, and the fact that its DRM activity is near that of noble metal catalysts. However, Ni has been shown to deactivate quickly under DRM conditions. Rare earth oxides such as CeO2, or as CeO2-ZrO2 (CZO) are supports that improve both the activity and stability of Ni DRM systems due to their redox activity. However, this same activity is thought …

Secure Reconfigurable Computing Paradigms For The Next Generation Of Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning Applications, Brooks Olney
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have been popular tools for data analysis at the edge, particularly through complex deep and convolutional neural networks (DNNs/CNNs), which can learn to parameterize a function given a labeled dataset. Indeed, these technologies have enabled significant progress across a wide range of fields and are becoming ubiquitous. However, training the best model for an application and subsequently using them to evaluate data in real-time requires an immense amount of computational power. Typically, ``smart" sensors at the edge rely on the cloud to accelerate this computation due to power and compute …

Cable Decoupling And Cable-Based Stiffening Of Continuum Robots, Parsa Molaei
LSU Master's Theses
Cable-driven continuum robots, which are robots with a continuously flexible backbone and no identifiable joints that are actuated by cables, have shown great potential for many applications in unstructured, uncertain environments. However, the standard design for a cable-driven continuum robot segment, which bends a continuous backbone along a circular arc, has many compliant modes of deformation which are uncontrolled, and which may result in buckling or other undesirable behaviors if not ameliorated. In this study, a detailed approach for using additional cables to selectively stiffen planar cable-driven robots without substantial coupling to the actuating cables is investigated. A mechanics-based model …

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this paper, an optimized memristor emulator circuit is designed, by using nine MOSFET transistors and a ground capacitor. Our area- and power-optimized emulator circuit can be used for basic data storage and processing at the monitoring edge, in real-time applications. The memristor shows a nonlinear voltage–current relationship, but no multiplier circuit provides the memristor's nonlinear characteristics. As a result, the proposed memristor emulator has a very low chip area. The memristor circuit is designed in LTSpice, using 16 nm and 45 nm CMOS technology parameters, and the operating voltage is ±0.9 V. In this research, the theoretical derivations are …

Maintenance Scheduling Algorithm For Transformers In Tanzania Electrical Secondary Distribution Networks, Hadija Mbembati, Kwame Ibwe, Baraka Maiseli
Tanzania Journal of Science
The drive by the government of Tanzania to electrify every village has resulted into expansion of the electrical secondary distribution networks (ESDNs). Therefore, maintenance management is of the highest priority for the smooth operation of the ESDNs to reduce unscheduled downtime and unexpected mechanical failures. Studies show that condition-based predictive maintenance (CBPdM) method allows the utility company to monitor, analyze and process the information obtained from ESDNs transformers. Thus, this study adopts the CBPdM method to develop a maintenance scheduling algorithm that can predict the transformer state, forecast maintenance time based on transformer load profile and schedule its maintenance using …

Adsorption Of Water Vapour On The Microstructure And Stability Of Cu-Zn Bimetallic Coordination Polymer, Bukunola K. Oguntade, Gareth M. Watkins
Tanzania Journal of Science
A current challenge in the design of synthesis lies in the incorporation of two or more transition metals into a coordination polymer. The most widely used approach has been to incorporate a second metal as a generally innocent (coordinatively saturated) part of a linear linker as in the case of multifunctional carboxylated porphyrins (MCPs). The empirical method has been used to obtain many other types of MCPs; however, the selective, direct replacement of one transition metal within a monometallic coordination polymer via controlled stoichiometry has not generally led to maintained structural fidelity. In this present work, three pyromellitic acid complexes …

A Cloud Based Model Symbiotic Organism Search Algorithm For Placement Of Distributed Energy Resources In The Electrical Secondary Distribution Networks, Shamte Kawambwa, Daudi Mnyanghwalo
Tanzania Journal of Science
Abstract The increased penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) technologies to residential users has fostered the need for DERs integration and control methods in the secondary distribution networks (SDN). In order to reap the potential advantages of DERs and achieve their inclusion in the electrical power system while avoiding their negative impacts, the DERs should be optimally placed and sized. Considering the nature of electrical networks and DER operations, the DERs placement is a nondeterministic polynomial hard (NP-hard) optimization problem. Metaheuristic algorithms are efficient for solving DER placement problems. Metaheuristic algorithms for DER placement in SDN involve high computational effort, …

Evaluation Of Image Enhancement Techniques For Electrical Capacitance Tomography Applications, Alfred J Mwambela
Tanzania Journal of Science
The fast generation of images in Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) systems is a desirable feature for many industrial applications. Non-iterative reconstruction algorithms which qualify for this requirement generate poor-quality images. The Linear Back Projection (LBP) is the fastest non-iterative reconstruction algorithm. The challenge is to find a technique to improve the quality of images from LBP at a low computational cost. Image enhancement techniques have been investigated for improving the quality of images reconstructed from the LBP algorithm. Simulated and measured static and dynamic flow data were used in the evaluation. The performance results were benchmarked with results from the …

Rare earth elements (REEs) are a vital part of many technologies with particular importance to the renewable energy sector and there is a pressing need for environmentally friendly and sustainable processes to recover and recycle them from waste streams. Functionalized polymer scaffolds are a promising means to recover REEs due to the ability to engineer both transport properties of the porous material and specificity for target ions. In this work, REE adsorbing polymer scaffolds were synthesized by first introducing poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (GMA) brushes onto porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) surface through activator generated electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (AGET ATRP). …

Diagnostic Gold Deportment Studies And Leaching Behaviour Of Small-Scale Gold Mining Tailings From Eastern Region, Ghana, Ishmael Quaicoe, Martin Beyuo, Solomon Quaicoe, Nikao A. Lasidzi
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector employs about 80% of the mining workforce but only contributes about 20-30% of Ghana’s gold production. The low gold production is linked to low recoveries associated with the activities because ofinadequate understanding of the chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical characteristics of the ores. This study examined the metallurgical characteristics of typical small-scale gold mining tailings to understand their grinding characteristics, gold deportment and cyanidation behaviour. The gold deportment results showed that 96.1% of the gold in the samples is free milling (can be leached directly with cyanide and recovered through carbon adsorption), whilst the …

Embedding Virtual Reality In Architectural Pedagogy: Instructionism Versus Constructionism Approach, Marwa Charkas, Kareem S. Galal
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
As more related to the typology of architectural pedagogy, Instructionism and Constructionism theories are used to make more advancement in this domain. They are concerned with the role of both instructor and learner within the outline of a well structured pedagogical framework (education system). However, the developments in information technology and its imprints on all life aspects have profoundly influenced this system. Architecture pedagogy -as in many other domains- is now radically affected by information technology (IT) developments. Virtual reality is one of the leading applications of IT in architecture.
This paper is concerned with embedding virtual reality in architectural …

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
This paper is based on a PHD research carried out to explore Urban Land Use Succession (ULUS) that is driven by private actors financed by local or global capital, referred to as property-led urban redevelopment. ULUS is manifested in indicators like land values, height of buildings, and migration. Its motive is profit taking contrasting it from ULUS that is driven by public and public-private partnerships (PPPs). ULUS has helped reimage cities, but in some cases, it has resulted in negative consequences such as pressure on existing infrastructure and patchwork land use patterns. A case study of Upper Hill is used …

Using simulation tools, this study investigates the effect of green walls (GWs) on the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon within different street sizes. It can be planted without taking up more area and could enhance the microclimate environment, which is why it has a wide range of use potential in urban areas. Because Mina City has a threat of UHI, it was chosen for this study. The temperature within various street sizes in the research region was evaluated using only software called ENVI-met that simulates climate, and three common scenarios were chosen. In the first experiment, green walls extending over …

The incorporation IoT into our social systems and the digitization of our everyday life has become the new norm for societies worldwide. This study posits that digitization should apply to our cities as well. The digital aspect of technology is not always tangible – even in the figurative sense of grasping a concept – and its allure lies in this virtual aspect. That is the starting point of discussion in this paper – the virtuality of intelligent cities, the intangible forces that make these new cities smart, and how said forces can be incorporated to create new smart hybrid cities …

Spatial emotions have played a critical role in visual-spatial environmental assessment, which can be assessed using bio-sensors and language description. However, information on virtual spatial emotion assessment with objective emotion labels and natural language processing (NLP) is insufficient in literature. Thus, designers’ ability to assess spatial design quantitatively and cost effectively is limited before the design is finalized. This research measures the emotions expressed using electroencephalograms (EEGs) and descriptions in virtual reality (VR) spaces with different parameters. First, 26 subjects experienced 10 designed virtual spaces with a VR headset (Quest 2 device) corresponding to the different space parameters of shape, …
