Finite Element Modeling And Analysis Of Perforated Steel Members Under Blast Loading, Mahmoud T. Nawar, Ayman El-Zohairy, Ibrahim T. Arafa
Finite Element Modeling And Analysis Of Perforated Steel Members Under Blast Loading, Mahmoud T. Nawar, Ayman El-Zohairy, Ibrahim T. Arafa
Faculty Publications
Perforated steel members (PSMs) are now frequently used in building construction due to their beneficial features, including their proven blast-resistance abilities. To safeguard against structural failures from explosions and terrorist threats, perforated steel beams (PSBs) and perforated steel columns (PSCs) offer a viable alternative to traditional steel members. This is attributed to their impressive energy absorption potential, a result of their combined high strength and ductile behavior. In this study, numerical examinations of damage assessment under the combined effects of gravity and blast loads are carried out to mimic real-world scenarios of external explosions close to steel structures. The damage …

Construction Management
The San Luis Obispo’s Railroad Museum is a local organization that aims to preserve the history of the Southern Pacific Railroad and educate the community. The mission of this organization is to collect and display various historic artifacts for the public to see. This project serves to aid in the development of a 1923 boxcar into a future exhibit for the museum by creating a ramp that bridges the platform of the station to the boxcar. The ramp was constructed out of pressure treated lumber, angle iron to bind the lumber together, and hinges to allow it to fold. Both …
Paso Robles Police Department Shooting Range Stairs, Emily Ann Andres
Paso Robles Police Department Shooting Range Stairs, Emily Ann Andres
Construction Management
The Paso Robles Police Department has a shooting range located just outside the Paso Robles Airport. The range is a newer facility that is used for training by the Paso Robles Police, as well as departments from surrounding cities. The flagpole for the range, located at the top of the hill, was inaccessible due to the brush overgrowth, gopher holes, and uneven terrain. Thus, the department needed a new staircase to improve accessibility to the flagpole so the red flag can be flown while the shooting range is in use. With many neighboring facilities, such as the remote-control plane club, …

Soot formation in a co-flow diffusion ethylene flame with the addition of CO2 to the fuel (the CO2-F), oxidizer (the CO2-O), and fuel/oxidizer (the CO2-F/O) streams was numerically and experimentally investigated in this study. The effects of different CO2 addition ways on soot inception, soot condensation, H-abstraction-C2H2-addition (HACA) and oxidation by O2/OH processes, were quantitatively analyzed by introducing the integrated reaction rates over the whole computational domain. The simulated and experimental results showed that the CO2-F/O was the most effective in inhibiting soot formation …
Quantifying Impacts Of Climate Change On Headwater Streamflow Regime In Robinson Forest: Insights From 35-Years Of Data Collection., Lauren Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Climate change may shift patterns of streamflow permanence in headwater systems by altering the frequency, magnitude, duration, timing, and rate of change of surface streamflow, impacting both local ecosystems as well as regional water budgets and availability. While much uncertainty surrounds modeling-based methods to quantify the impacts of climate change on water budgets, long-term hydrologic data collected from headwaters in experimental research forests serve as critical evidence to reduce such uncertainty. The objective of this study is to quantify shifts in frequency, magnitude, duration, timing, and rate of change of streamflow in two headwater catchments with relatively little recent disturbance …

Improving And Integrating Quantitative Single Cell Spatial Biology For Theranostic Medicine, Peng Lu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Disease states are the result of a complex interplay of many different cell types interacting in close proximity in the context of often heterogeneous tissues. Alpha particles are drawing intense research and clinical interest because of their potent cytotoxic effects and their short path lengths. Analyzing the dose distribution and tissue micro-environment for alpha therapy plays a key role in predicting the efficacy of this targeted radiotherapy. However, to date there have been no direct on-tissue analytical methods for alpha dose distributions and the corresponding tissue microenvironments.
Therefore, we have developed a pipeline to overcome this limitation by utilizing quantitative …

Upcyclying Of Polyethylene Terephtalate By Addition Of Thermoplastic Elastomer, Diego Francisco Bermudez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Continual overconsumption of single-use plastics has generated challenges of solid waste management across the United States. Common plastic waste management solutions, such as landfill, have caused the migration of contaminants into the environment consequently affecting not only the health of wildlife, but also that of human beings. Alternative strategies for the handling of single-use plastic such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), used in the food packaging industry, can ultimately help mitigate the noxious consequences of single-use plastics affecting entire ecosystems. This study demonstrates a potential avenue of materials upcycling by studying the effects of coupling PET with the thermoplastic elastomer styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene …

Design Of A Low-Power Delay-Locked Loop-Based 8x Frequency Multiplier In 22 Nm Fdsoi, Naveed, Jeff Dix
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A low-power delay-locked loop (DLL)-based frequency multiplier is presented. The multiplier is designed in 22 nm FDSOI and achieves 8× multiplication. The proposed DLL uses a new simple duty cycle correction circuit and is XOR logic-based for frequency multiplication. Current starved delay cells are used to make the circuit power efficient. The circuit uses three 2× stages instead of an edge combiner to achieve 8× multiplication, thus requiring far less power and chip area as compared to conventional phase-locked loop (PLL) circuits. The proposed 8× multiplier occupies an active area of 0.09 mm2. The measurement result shows ultra-low power consumption …

Recent advances in additive manufacturing technologies have already led to wide-scale adoption of 3D-printed parts in various industries. The expansion in choice of materials that can be processed, particularly using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), and the steady advancements in dimensional accuracy control have extended the range of applications far beyond rapid prototyping. However, additive manufacturing still has considerable limitations compared to traditional and subtractive manufacturing processes. This work addresses limitations associated with the as-deposited surface roughness of 3D-printed parts. The effects of roughness-induced stress concentrations were studied on ultimate tensile strength and fatigue life. The samples were manufactured using a …

Robust Uncertainty Estimation Framework In Deep Reinforcement Learning For Active Slam, Bryan Joseph Pedraza
Theses and Dissertations
Autonomous mobile robots are essential in various domains such as industry, manufacturing and healthcare. Navigating autonomously and avoiding obstacles are crucial tasks that involve localizing the robot to explore and map unknown environments without prior knowledge. Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) present significant challenges. In this study, we introduce a new approach to address robust navigation and mapping of robot actions using Bayesian Actor-Critic (A2C) reinforcement learning. The A2C framework combines policy-based and value-based learning by dividing the model into two components: (1) the policy model (Actor) determines the actions based on the state, and (2) the value model (Critic) …
